Here's what some icons have to say about the book!!!
Ice-T: "Respect to Soren Baker for documenting the history of gangster rap in these pages. Some hate it. Some love it. But you can’t deny its brutal, hardcore honesty."
The D.O.C.: "History has so often been written by the victors, that you very rarely ever get the real story behind anything. So it’s really important to hear from the people that were there, which is exactly what Soren Baker shares in this book. He writes about it and he’s honest about it."
Xzibit: "Hip-hop changed the world. Gangster rap changed the narrative, and then changed the world again. Soren Baker has been a very integral part of documenting hip-hop on the West Coast for as long as I can remember. I don’t think anybody is more qualified to write this book."
Leslie “Big Lez” Segar: "Soren Baker has changed the perspective of gangster rap by putting his pen to paper. He has given hip-hop power, proven its potential, and made non-believers contemplate all of its possibilities. The truth in his writing leaves no stone unturned, something he's done again with The History of Gangster Rap. Soren doesn’t just champion hip-hop. He also reveals its flaws and its truths."

I always really liked how hard, harsh, and mechanical the beats on Schoolly D’s first record (The one with PSK) was. No melody/harmony, just hard ass beats.

As someone who grew up in the south Jersey and Philly metal community but had always had a love for hip hop, T is a hero. He is an expert on the history of both genres and widely respected in both areas. Nobody else has that distinction. He can run a hip hop or a heavy metal show and be at home in both places. This dude is an absolute legend.

As a member of the Hip Hop culture this dude here is so incredible. It's funny how he knew better than to negatively influence people (to a certain degree) but listen to these guys now. Drugs, killing, the exact opposite of what the architects of our culture worked to curtail. Crime rhymes are now all the rage and it's not getting better. The Hip Hop culture is hustling backwards.

Growing up I would record and show Ice T and Chuck D interviews to my non hip hop friends (which was all at one point, funny to think) I "like" how he can still "finesse" his way around "gangsta" import and influence Gotta read between the lines Ice T holds a special place in my history. I never watched him act in film after Breakin and New Jack I think I watched some of him being hunted in a movie I developed a disconnect having my "favorite" rappers becoming actors Then I learned many were just acting all along Ice T taught me much over the years Nice interview

I remember back to an interview Glen E. Friedman did with Rolling Stone about different pictures he took along his way to becoming one of the most respected photojournalists in the game. He said that once he went over to Ice T's place to take pictures to promote (I think), "Bodycount" and said that he had a gun on him even though he knew how much Glen hated guns. Glen suggested that he should let him take a picture of him holding the gun to his head with his big diamond ring and Rolex on because it would serve as a reminder to people looking at it that having all that expensive jewelry wouldn't mean shit if you were going mess around with guns. Of course that photo exists because Ice went along with it, just another example of Ice letting himself be the example of what happens if you follow a certain lifestyle. A true legend.

Ice t made me want to be a g, fulfilled that itch. But then changed my thinking between 2 albums. Pain is truly my favorite song of all time. I also remember him saying " telling me to stay in the hood is like telling an Indian you have to stay on a reservation". Power helpd keeps me going. Gotta have control if you want the gold I don't wanna be alone like stallone so I keep my mind thinking bout the green and stop dwelling on the in between... I got power! Live long brother

And you played yourself stopped me from getting high on weed everyday. All my friends started lacin weed with crack. Still to this very day your lyrics rang out from that song. All these youngsters I see getting high all on the streets. You thought that you can do dope and still stay cool.......fool, you played yourself. Havent smoked anything, weeds, cigarettes nothing since the 90's. Thank you brother again. We needed a real one to tell us not too. Salute

Gangster rappers have more shelf life. Hollywood made money from making films celebrating gangsters..villian and heros so they had already conditioned the audience for it. Ppl that really did it thought why not tell their story. Now x villians are even writing books and do podcasts etc.
