If in Da Lat, try to go for a one day or multiple day ride with the easy riders, but go to the old café andd try to meet Loc, very nice and very friendly guy, we did a tour with him, and it was amazing

Awesome! Had no idea Ha Long bay could be that expensive. I may well look at seeing if I can do it via Cat Ba. Sod paying up to $300 US and potentially being stuck on a party boat! Thanks for this :)

I went about 5 yrs ago to halong bay trip from Hanoi that was 2 days and about $40 maybe and was great time. we were at end of our trip so we couldn't go the extra time to cat ba but I wouldn't say our trip was a rip off at all. lovely meals and accommodation on the boat, kayaking and the caves very good fun. I hope things have not changed since my trip.
