I believe Sibelius is the absolute master of simplicity, it's never too much and never too little.

I love this set. It's so quietly unapologetic. "I'm just music and I'm content with that"

Sibelius is one of the great composers of the Romantic era. Listening to the works you experience pleasant emotions. The impromtu's are very beautiful. I especially liked the fifth, also B minor is my favorite key. I am a pianist and I think that all Impromptu 's are beautiful. I believe that I will somehow play all of them myself. 😊

there's a really free but reserved usage of dissonance in these pieces I feel. on one hand dissonances are often unprepared, have no resolution, even sometimes function as resting or pedal harmonies, but are used relatively sparingly. very serene and interesting effect, almost bit satie-esque in my opinion (especially in the last three). also the phrases, melodies and the voiceleading in the harmonic accompaniment are often kind of blocky and unintuitive. all of that makes for a really intimate, kind of novel and weird impression. Im not entirely sure if I like it that much stylistically, but it is definitely very interesting!

What a fantastic analysis! This is, of course, an earlier piece, so Sibelius was still experimenting to try and find his voice as a composer but nonetheless I do agree that some parts feel a bit weird stylistically.

Sibelius creates a world of Finnish dances, folk songs and spirits. A musical place unto itself, similar, yet distinctively seperate from its Viking and Slavic neighbors.

Sibelius is a great composer. These compositions, including #5 are not elements of his greatness. Only a Finn would understand why he had to compose these odd pieces. They have great didactic value but no one wants to hear them.

His thematic writing and development in his symphonies is fantastic, I think, and his skillful orchestration really emphasises the beauty of his melodies. He also makes great use of tonal colours.
