Back at highschool, I was part of a drawing club. Everyone was an anime fan, including our teacher and supervisor, bless her heart. Every friday when we didn't got in trouble with the school library, she would ask permision to put a movie, mostly anime movies as well as korean movies. Akira was one of them and it blew my mind, among many other films that we got to watch. It holds a special place in My heart for many reasons.

If you haven't already, I cannot recommend enough the actual manga Akira if you ever want to do a review/analysis of it like with OPM and Berserk. You absolutely nailed it in how a lot of people went into Akira nowadays expecting a lot from this iconic film and coming out confused as hell after their first viewing. Thankfully for me I read the manga immediately afterward and I absolutely adored everything about it, eclipsing the movie for me by a longshot.
Yes, it's a bit of an unfortunate comparison since the Akira movie not only adapted a small portion of the manga, but also was produced BEFORE THE MANGA EVEN CONCLUDED. I can barely imagine how that must have been for the manga author to think up an ending for his own work while simultaneously working on the film as director. The manga contextualizes so much of the story, has a ton of character growth and backstory for people like Kaneda (I can''t get over how you pronounce his name like "Canada" lol), and has one of the most optimistic and hopeful messages about humanity at the end despite all the destruction that happened during Tetsuo's final mental breakdown.
Akira, both the movie and manga, are absolutely amazing works of art.
If you're still interested in more retro/80's to 90's anime movies, then maybe try watching a movie called Angel's Egg? It was made by the same director who did both Ghost in the Shell movies, and if you thought that Akira's story was confusing then you are going to get your mind twisted into pieces with this film lol. Tons of symbolic and religious themes in the movie and a story that is left mostly up to the audience to piece together and interpret.

Excellent video Ryan. I remember when I was just a freshman in high school my experience with anime at that point had only been with shows like Dragon Ball Z and Yu Yu Hakusho on Tyunami. Then one late night I turned on the T.V. and for some reason Akira was on. I tuned in by the half way point, and I thought it was so unique yet so bizarre from everything I was use to, even when compared to what little anime I knew about at the time. I didn't know what was going on, but needless to say I was intrigued by how very violent and very adult it was. After watching the movie, I had to get more. So I ended up buying all the books and it was a ride. The plot of Akira still confuses me to this day, but it's one hell of a ride.

I was high the first time I saw Akira and damn this experience left an impression on me. As I was watching my mind was kind of wandering off and filling in all the gaps in the story and creating a whole world outside of the story. I then decided to immediately read up on the Manga and as it turned out, whatever my mind was coming up with as an explanation for what was happening wasn't that different from what was happening in the Manga.
This movie and the story left a lasting impression on me and I will always consider it as one of the greatest pieces of art and entertainment ever.

I first watched Akira at the age of 5 on a bootleg VHS my brother brang home.
I never understood the movie plot but I was drawn into the 240p over saturated pirate copied version of the Official stunning animation we can see today in 4K print.
The red leather jacket and bike scene had my attention. The fight scene's, the swearing and the way their body moved was far beyond the level of cartoons I was watching at 5 years old (Flinstones, Rugrats, Simpsons)
IT WAS FROM THAT MOMENT - I got into anime and watched all the stash my bro kept (Ninja scroll, Street Fighter 2 and Dangioh) Syfy Channel showed Fist of the north star at 11pm and eventually Toonami showed Dragonball Z.
Years later everyone in the school playground were talking about Arthur and Ed, Edd n Eddy but the only Anime they knew was Pokemon.
I was watching them with judgment and sad eyes because by then our akira VHS was long gone and I could've led everyone to real world of Anime. It was not their destiny
Then in 2003 Pioneer released the 2 disc Edition of Akira and I got it from HMV, I was around 12-13 years old but the old lady didn't even look at the 15 certificate. All she saw was a "cartoon" (LUCKY ME)
This time around I was sure i would understand the plot. WRONG!
I was still confused. I got the gist of it but I still had too many questions etc
I went to my local library, put in a request and lo behold they ordered the MANGA set of AKIRA.
    I read it all.
That shit got me depressed and thinking about society as a whole and mankind lol. The manga comes in 6 volumes which follows a richer and more thought provoking path.
I then stuck on the dvd and just like the explosion in the beginning of AKIRA...... I was blown away

I hope this dont go to far off subject but I feel the Movie Watership Down paved they way for movies like Akira and Jin-Roh they share some similar theme's. The cartoon was released in 1978 and was actually very violent in truth more violent than other works from the west. Dont know if you ever seen it but it was something my own father had me watch once i was 6-7 so around 1986-87. My father was a soldier as my grandfather and my dad felt it was a very important movie..in truth it was so violent that the only reason it was not banned was because it involved animals and not human's. There were some parents who looked at the VHS cover an saw cute bunnies on a green sunny hill and thought hey the kids will like this..they pushed the play button and eyes were being clawed and throats being ripped out and bodies left in pools of blood. Bigwig I always thought was almost like a badass anime protagonist like Fuse and Guts...esp Guts since he would risk life and limb to do what he thought was right and protect those he cared for...he even has hair like Guts lol.

Some of the best animation and art direction I've ever seen, a shame the story kinda falls flat in this film, which is understandable since they did the film while the manga was still on going. So this is just an abridged version which only covers 30% of the manga.
I've heard they're actually doing an anime series adaptation and I hope it's fucking great because the manga more than deserves it and it's a long time coming.

I'm gonna be honest with you, I always preferred the original Streamline dub over Pioneers re-dub. Pioneers version was great thanks to it fixed script, but my God Tetsuo is where I turn off my brain as the original echoed a malevolence and intensity that Tai( yes Digimons Tai) couldn't match. Still, I can't blame him for trying though.
