Playdough Surgery 🔪💉- Melanoma Wide Local Excision + Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy

In our next case, we learned about cancer metastasis and the utility of a sentinel lymph node biopsy. This procedure is used to help predict cancer spread to distant sites in the body, and provides important prognostic and therapeutic information for thick melanomas - particularly in an era of newer adjuvant immunotherapies.

Preoperative injection of a radiotracer around the melanoma is followed by mapping of the lymph nodes the cancer is most likely to travel to first - the “sentinel” nodes. Surgery is then performed to remove these nodes, as well as the primary melanoma via a wide local excision, both of which are then sent to the pathologist for histologic evaluation.
