I hope you're still loving them at 23💗
And I know how you feel: When I was 16, one of my best friends was a huge music buff and a brilliant guitarist--he was more than 10 years older than me and taught me almost everything I know about music.
But *I* had the honor of introducing him to the classic L.A. punk band X😊
He'd never heard them, and he loved them to death💖
Even got me their autographs when he went to see them live🥰

I love this band. I've seen them live many times, and love everything from beginning to now. The wonderful early videos with just speakers thumping and the occasional 'human' touch like a cigarette flick or whatever to the full on performance video here. There are lyrics here that are so wise, and yet so believable. I'm an eternal Florida fan.

It gets a bit tiring to always hear the Replacements referred to as underrated, but I will say that this song is underrated. I always thought it was just great, and never understood why people wrote off All Shook Down and almost all of the Replacements' post-Tim output. There's tremendous stuff there.

    • @rdrrr
      @rdrrr Před 6 měsíci

@darrenholmes4213 I wanna like it but I find because so many of the songs are midtempo and downbeat they kinda blur together. There are some really excellent tracks on _Shook_ though. I particularly love this one, the creepy title track and the energetic and desperate "Bent Out of Shape".

Actually the first Mats song I ever heard (completely unwittingly) I remember hearing this on college station as a 13 year old in the mid 90s when this was still relatively contemporary, despite them breaking up a few years before, (right in time of course to miss the whole alt rock/grunge breakthrough which could have made them huge stars had it happened 5 years earlier.) Made enough of an impression that I recognized it years later when I got around to All Shook Down after Let It Be, Tim and PTMM. Even thought this is clearly them breaking up (and really a Westerberg solo song) still a classic. How I love this band

A hush was the first word you were taught
And I watched you wear the clothes they claimed that they bought
    They brought you down
To watch the merry go around
In fall, you knew how much cost
The trouble doll, around your neck when you lost
    You wouldn't make a sound
But I could hear your little heart pound
And I watched your feet slip off the ground
    Merry go round, in dreams
    Writes 'em down, it seems
    When she sleeps, she's free
    Merry go round, in dreams
You wake to another day and find
The winds blowin' outta key with your sky
    Only you can see
And the rain dancin' in the night
    Everybody stands around in daylight
    Merry go round, in dreams
    Writes 'em down, it seems
    When she sleeps, she's free
    Merry go round, in dreams
    And everybody thinks she's sick
Shes got two worlds she can pick
    And she's sad
    ...
Hush is the only word you know
And I stopped listening long ago
They ignored me with a smile
    You as a child
But the trouble doll hears your heart pound
And your feet say good-bye to the ground
    Merry go round, in dreams
    Writes 'em down, it seems
    When she sleeps, she's free
    Merry go round, in dreams
    Merry go round, in dreams
    Merry go round, in me
    Merry go round
    Merry go round

I understand old school (older) fans being mad at this stage in the game , post bob Stinson. But it’s a great song, and I’m glad I heard this record first. It was beautiful to find “stink” and hootenanny after this, you can see the songwriting progression. I much prefer late ‘mats to most classic rock, or even most late 90s modern rock. Paul is a great songwriter, even if this isn’t as great as let it be, I still love it.

+TylerPierson Hmmm... Mats fans cling to the old songs. Listen to the whole catalog and then get back to them. May I recommend two old songs "I'm in Trouble" or "Within Your Reach"?

I've listened to every album. Still love this song. Honestly I think this whole album is kinda underrated, even if it was the Paul Westerberg show at this point

No way.. I'm 28 and have been a huge Replacements fan for years. I got into them in the late 90s because of one of my favorite bands, the Goo Goo Dolls. My favorite Goo albums were all from their early years, when they were bashed for being cheap Replacements knockoffs. Frankly, both bands were hugely unappreciated during those years and had many great songs that got little attention from anyone.

I love this song. Funniest part of the video is for all of the 3 seconds the camera is on Chris, the look on his face is just screaming "Get me the fuck out of this band now!"

The worst part is that it isn't even Chris playing on this song! For this video he had to pantomime playing along to the work of another drummer on the recording! (Still love the song, though!)

Found out he didn't play on "They're Blind" because it's 6/8 timing. Also, there's a reason he doesn't play on songs like "Within Your Reach", "Answering Machine" - his drumming style is very unique yet not condusive to other styles. As Westerberg's songwriting was becoming prolific, Mars' playing didn't evolve although his rhythm and timing were impeccable in PTMM and DTAS. Westerberg admitted he couldn't bring a lot of songs to the Mats either because Bob would hate them or Chris couldn't play them the way Westerberg wanted.

I love Paul but he created drama where there didn't need to be any. Chris Mars could play any of these songs. His drumming style was perfect for the band. Paul, understandably, would get bored with playing with the same players. The drum machine on "Within Your Reach" adds a quality. Doesn't mean Mars has to be blamed for anything. And that 6/8 timing bull. Give me a break. Chris was a scapegoat for Paul and later Tommy because they were balls deep alcoholics and Chris was keeping a little cleaner. Pete Townshend does the same thing. Talks shit about Keith Moon. The ego of a songwriter. Justified but painful to witness let alone be victimized by. p.s. Paul always said "you guys try writing songs" and subsequently Chris, Slim and Tommy all put out solo records that were better, arguably, than Paul's. Great great band. Love em to death.

To nobody's surprise, the Mats decision-making process certainly wasn't democratic. The thread was unraveling soon after they signed with SIRE and they were seeking that big break they never got, nor did they really make an effort to obtain. The pressure was put onto Paul by the music exec's and management who put a lot of energy and wanting them to succeed, i.e. sell more records, play bigger venues, etc. However, to the Mats' chagrin, their longview perception of success was really about how influential they've become after their tenure. I agree that the other Mats' members had their unique abilities to write songs; however, they deferred to Paul because they knew he would lead the band to success, albeit down the road of despair.
