- Well I finally pulled the trigger on a CNC machine. So in this video I go over why I decided to get into CNC. And some other info that anyone who has considered getting a CNC find helpful.
Dane Nichols builds and repairs guitars and other assorted stringed instruments in Mt. Shasta, Ca.

VERY cool stuff Dane I'm already anxious to see this device in action! it'd be handy for so many things!
Thanks Randy, yes I needed to think of all the things I could do with this machine to justify the cost. But I got it mainly for inlays.
Can't wait to see how this progresses, I really wish I had the space for one!!
Space wise it was a work around thing. My table saw has a 50" cut width but I rarely need it. It just piles up with junk. So now it's piled up with cnc. And I have a 16" cut max on my saw. And I have two band saws.
I've been practicing by making a multi piece jig for cutting saddle slots on acoustic guitars.
Should be fun! If you run into any issues or software questions, let me know.
Thanks a lot Greg. I appreciate that.
It's the next logical step Dane, but truth to tell we both know there's no way it'll improve what you (can) do. It might help to make you make inroads on competitiveness though. Looks like good kit on the face of it. I use a Pi Nano with an MMDVM (don't ask!) but I don't have the requisite Unix type skills, so I stand upon the shoulders of others. With a Pi, Linux will be the new friend and one you never knew you had!
Somebody else suggested a Pi. It makes me think of the M2 little box that Apple makes. Guess you would still need a monitor. Anyway I bought the control box from Foxalien and I'm a little disappointed with it. It only allows jogging up to 10mm at time. Thanks for having a look Steve.
As you have crossed over I'm just waiting for the rasping breath. Joke aside - the soul doesn't disappear, but the inaccuracy does. It seems to be a very solid and stiff machine you have bought and a good choice with ball screws. Since you are now spending like there's no tomorrow😄 maybe you should consider also getting a raspberry pi to use as the console for UGS, Candle or Gsender - to actually control the machine. The Pi has no moving parts and is rather dust resistant.
Hey Gert, I'll to look up PI. I have no idea what that is. I did order the controller so I won't need the laptop in the shop. Thanks Gert.
Well, you stepped in it. I know it will only be in time when you step all the way in and start making bodies and necks on the CNC! LOL! It's like having a Hot Rod and 1200 HP's under the hood and telling people you won't ever push the pedal to the floor. LOL!
I'm still getting the bugs worked out. I will for sure be doing pickup cavities and neck pockets. It's beast but I don't know about full bodies.
That's awesome!!! I am finding so many amazing uses for mine. Congrats! What software are you going to CAM in?
I'm using Candle because I guy I watched on CZcams said it was the easiest for beginners. So Easel to Candle. I've had a few successes so I'm encouraged. Thanks for chiming in here James.
Hope you're nerdy enough to figure out all the pc side of it lol
I'll have to hang my "cool" up for a while as I learn this. This kind of your fault. After seeing that sweet little laser you are using. Buy once I started researching this stuff. Wow!
