He thinks that the student needs to stay longer with the pieces as they are obviously not polished yet. Zimerman then explains how his ways of teaching. Wenyu also asked if he could be his teacher. Personally, it is obvious how the student plays monotonously. His sound is unpleasant and harsh. I think Zimerman saw that. Nevertheless, he displays very good technical skills and I wish him the best of luck.
He did perform Rachmaninoff Concerto No. 3 when he was 16 in Brussels; it's available on youtube. In my humble opinion it was really quite good given the age.
Perhaps by now the once young student has learned to use expression. Bravo at his abilities as in raw talent. You can see the great Zimerman here and there inserting his expression where he would have. Only the fingering seems to be all about what the student has to impress with in this session.

I’ve listened to some of his recent recordings which he made at home, and it saddens me that his ability seemed to have peaked at 16 when he won the Elizabeth award. I don’t want to be too critical of his parents (they have been blamed for causing him to end his studies in Germany prematurely, when he was only 18 and still had a lot to learn as a burgeoning pianist), but it has always made me wonder what his career trajectory would be like had he simply stayed in Hanover and finished his studies.

He was very sheltered and was not allowed to do much else besides play piano since a very young age. Nowadays he is much more humble and does good but before he was disrespectful or came off that way because he spoke mainly a dialect of Chinese, and was not really taught English or more mainstream Chinese. My mom says everyone on the Internet says his parents ruined him.
I remember finding the performance he won the QE. It was breathtaking. (He must have benefitted from some important study between this vid and the competition). Sadly that does seem to have been the peak. I knew someone in Manchester, who I first came across when he played a Mozart Concerto with an holiday orchestra I played in aged 16 (I played the oboe). He was about my age and was simply astonishing. (He played at a concert during the course: Bach, Beethoven, Chopin all played with extraordinary mastery). I saw him periodically when we attended the conservatoire there a couple of years later. Somehow he didn't really blossom. The person who took on that mantle was Stephen Hough who was pretty low key until he played Brahms 2 in his final year. The rest is history. I looked up this pianist a couple of years ago, wondering what had become of him. He now lives in Worthing and does some recital work and chamber music. And he also plays chess. Somehow he has found a quiet, low key life involving the things he likes so maybe that is enough. His name is Francis Raynor and he does have a website which includes some audio clips of him playing. There is some astonishingly beautiful Brahms (Op118, I think).

Despite the short passage about the octave-glissando - where Zimermann comments on technique - he mainly asks questions about teaching (what pieces he played, how often he meets his teacher etc.) and (later on) explains his own teaching-method, when Wen-Yu asked, if he could be his student. Zimermann seems to be somewhat critical - Wen-Yu learned (and played) a lot of pieces in a short period of time - certainly, he said, not his tempo. He prefers to slow down and really focus on a piece over a long time (sometimes up to 1.5 years). That being said, I think he was impressed, but modest in his appreciation.
To even attempt the R 3 at that age is courageous. So easy to be critical. Put this boy with a top drawer orchestra and present it anonymously..... l wonder what criticisms would then come to light?

@The Pocket Shot, I've seen plenty of musical performances of Rach 3 by young people. Many of them have the technique to pull it off, and as for musical maturity, it depends. But it doesn't hurt to learn Rach 3 in your mid-teens or twenties, provided that you have the technique for it.
No way. WenYu had great potential as a child prodigy but his career ended prematurely due to bad decisions made by his parents. His story is honestly quite sad.
If I had the chance to play for Zimerman, I would faint on the spot.

説笑了！不過我發覺好些老一輩的西方古典音樂家，尤其是歐洲人，對東方音樂人都有一種不知名的敵意，一方面是出於種族歧視，一方面是出於恐懼心理，恐懼東方人在音樂上的優秀(好些的確是優秀， 尤其這幾年人才輩出，遠遠超出西方人)不僅會超越他們，甚至取代他們。我就常常在油管上看到所謂"東方人不懂得西方/歐洲文化，他們就只是技術好，跟本不懂古典音樂。。。"諸如此類嫉妒的言論。
當然我們不知Zimmermann的心態，也不是說他對沈文裕的評論不對或有歧視，他認為沈文裕有些囫圇吞棗的學了太多的曲目，所以並不大欣賞他。我只是想說沈文裕在14歲就可以演奏拉三的確不簡單！
沈文裕16岁巅峰回国后就一直走下坡路。他技术虽然好但是音乐上还很稚嫩，回国后就停滞不前了。伊丽莎白奖是他当时在德国的老师一点点抠出来的，让他的演奏达到了很高的水准。但他回国的时候音乐上还远没有成熟，还不能离开老师的教导，好像一个还没熟的果子就被人摘下来了。我每次看到他后来在地下室弹的那些心里都在滴血。现代版的伤仲永。也不是完全没救，音乐上大器晚成的也有，好像朱晓玫。只能说看造化了。
