    I think a lot of why Milk and Honey first became popular was because of how accessible the writing style is and how honest the content is. Even though this is one of my faves and it helped me heal a lot i can see how the writing style wasn’t doing it for you and how the subject matter wasn’t relatable but i think being a young girl made her work feel really special to me and i could really relate.

    I loved Milk and Honey but I also found it was difficult to connect with the subject matter too, it's amazing that the book has brought so much healing to a lot of people (and I did still enjoy it) but I totally understand where you're coming from when you talk about finding that connection to the poetry. It's wonderful, healing, and raw - but that doesn;t mean we would all automatically connect it to it. I really enjoy Lang Leav poetry, I think she's my favourite.

    i agree with what you said about milk and honey. a lot of it didn't even feel like poetry to me. more like tumblr quotes with the enter button pressed in random places. i respect the story and how it has helped a lot of people, but it didn't make me feel anything poetically.

    I understand you on the Milk and Honey, I felt like...as a female, some of the thoughts were way to extremist. I mean, some of the poems are really great, some others are just "meh", and others are extremist...

    • @ThePhoenixFlight
      @ThePhoenixFlight Před 6 lety +3

      Usually I wouldn't feel the need to say that as a disclaimer, or to say that kind of things, but the book is quite feminist in essence. The themes she writes about are things mostly experienced by women, but her approach is quite extremist, like I said. At least from my point of view, of course. So, when I said "as a female", it's actually because "as a female" it made me quite unconfortable with some of the thoughts that are on the book.

  • @SixthSenseSynesthete
    @SixthSenseSynesthete Před 6 lety +56

    Totally agree about Milk & Honey...I felt bad about disliking it because it was obviously so personal for the author but it came across as melodramatic. Many of the “poems” were barely a sentence long and I just felt there wasn’t a lot of effort for how much hype it got

    • @cutecheerfreak1
      @cutecheerfreak1 Před 6 lety +6

      SixthSenseSynesthete no shade at all...but, the length of a poem does not in anyway dictate the effort put forth into that poem. It takes many authors years of education and personal growth to actually learn to create shorter poems. Also i think its hard to deny that she really poured her heart and soul into it. Its not my fave book of poetry or anything but I think it's hard to deny there was a lot of effort put forth. Also i think the melodrama you sensed was actually pent up emotion on the page, many poets could be seen this way lol. Like I said no shade at you intended at all just throwing it out there. Hopefully you find a poet who's style suites you more!

    • @SixthSenseSynesthete
      @SixthSenseSynesthete Před 6 lety +9

      I absolutely agree a length of a poem does not indicate how "good" it is. I just found that Kaur's poems were trying really hard to be profound with how she staggered the text of a short poem around the page, and that for me, it ended up being melodramatic instead. I got the sense, as do a lot of critics of her work, that I was reading a teen's Tumblr page rather than published poetry. However, I am planning on reading her newly published anthology and I've heard good things about it. Thanks for sharing your opinion!

    I actually had a really bad reading year. Most books I read this year were 1 or 2 stars. Probably the worst for me was (And Jesse, please don't kill me for this) Library of Souls by Ransom Riggs. The ending made me so angry, like he wanted everything to end perfectly and happily ever after. Also, the relationship between Emma and Jacob was disgusting to me. I would never date a man my grandma dated no matter how young he looks. Please forgive me Jesse ❤

    I started reading YA at 8 😂😂 My third grade teacher kept taking my books from me and my dad had to get them from the office!! Which kinda sucks, because the books that were average for my level were way too easy!! 😂😂 I'm in sixth grade now and I read a few adult books but my dad reads them before me to make sure I don't get 'scarred' from it. Worst Books I Read This Year:
    Caraval (liked the plot, but not the flowery dreamy prose, not my thing, but I will read the second)
    Wicked Like Wildfire (same dreamy prose, but less enjoyable plot, not continuing the series)
    Hollowlands (there's potential there, but nope)

I didn't like Juliet as a character and Warner was a complete pervert, and apparently he can be forgiven because "He's hot". The Supernaturalist had awful, 2 dimensional characters. The girl character had the personality of a rock was only there for the FOURTEEN YEAR OLD to kiss and date. The only two characters I liked died. There was also a minor love triangle, which like -_-.

    Many people don’t like milk and honey but like her new one her sun and her flowers :)! It’s so annoying when you expect a book to be great and it isn’t! Makes me sad haha!

    If you like whimsical books I have to recommend the Colours of Madeline series; truely oneOf the most whimsically (and heartfelt) series I have read

    Haha love the shade. I personally was disappointed with the chronicles of narnia. I read the first few books this year and feel I should have read them when I was younger. It’s just not the same reading for the first time as an adult.

    I had a pretty good reading year even my worst books were like a 2.5 soft 3 stars and they were, Percy Jackson Book 2, Sing Unburied Sing by Jesmyn Ward, and Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire. I feel like all of them were either missing something or trying to do to much.

    It´s great that you didn´t have that many bad books this year. I only have one Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce, found it at a used bookstore and though why not?. But less than half way through already knew the ending coming, which normally isn´t a problem but it was sooo boring that ended up dnfing it

    Let's talk about Summerland, I read it for school last year and it was probably the most painful experience of my life. There was no way for me to sparknote it, no one really cares about baseball enough, and characters were just popping up left and right

    All The Birds In The Sky by Charlie Jane Anders was my disappointing read of this year. I really liked the first half, but the second half when they’re older just wasn’t for me. Thankfully I don’t read many disappointing books 😊

      This was the first book I read this year and I completely agree!! I loved the first bit where they're kids, but just couldn't connect with them as adults. It was a great concept, but I'm not sure she quite managed to achieve it.

    Carval. It looks so pretty, sounds so amazing, but the story was just a no. And also Star-Touched Queen. The pacing ruined it for me
