I saw this clip on a tv special about lighting. The reason why the players hit the ground was not because they were frightened or scared, they actually got electrocuted when the lighting hit the ground because the ground was wet (it spread through the water). The red players who stayed on the ground were closest to the strike so they got a bigger jolt than the ones further out. For them it was like being hit with a taser.
If that was true then more people would have fallen around them... theyre just weak AF and tried getting a free kick because they got scared of the thunder
For those who are wondering why the soccer players fell when they didn't appear to be "hit" by lightning: they got an electrical shock from the ground because they were wearing metal cleats.
in football/soccer metal cleats are illegal so it doesn’t make since for them to have met cleats. i believe it was the rain and water on the field that made the shock go to multiple players. they dropped to the ground because they were just electrocuted.
For anyone who is wondering, the field was soaking wet.. So the people on the field were actually electrocuted. Those who had both feet on the ground experienced even more pain.
0:07 watch the corner flag, left from the white IWISA sign and you can see where the lightning hits the ground! So from the distance i assume it was the shock because of the loud noise, that damaged their hearing. Isn't this a bit too far for the electric current to travel through the turf?
It could've been that. But a lightning strike most of the time contains step-leaders (the branches that come out from a strike) that could of hit them. These branches can stretch up to 100 meters away from the strike. So probably the branches of the strike hit them and shocked them.
We should make a rule that we should play football match indoors like in a gym during a thunderstorm. Outdoor football matches should be canceled during a thunderstorm.
I saw an unfortunate man get struck at an american college football game several years ago. He was sitting almost exactly across from us at the same yard line. The sound shook the entire stadium, hurt my ears and put spots in my eyes. I don't recall if the man survived or not, I just know that ever since then, if lightning starts to build the officials don't waste time in stopping the game for awhile.
Lightning tends to travel along the surface, and in this way can (and does) injure multiple people (or other living things) at once. In addition, statistically speaking about one in four lightning-strike victims die (though these footballers probably have a better chance as there were likely medical professionals on hand).
My grandpa was playing in a game of cricket in Queensland and during the game a player was directly hit by lightning and died, everyone was knocked down to the ground by the strike
Years ago I was on the school field with mates when lightning struck the tennis courts about 30 metres away. We were wearing rubber sole trainers, no one was injured but afterwards the tennis players said that the lightning traveled around the courts' perimeter fence. We felt and heard nothing, but people who were sheltering nearby ran on the field asking if we were alright. We couldnt understand what the fuss was about. They said little fingers of lightning had appeared over all our heads.
That's not correct. The fact that the lightning hit nearby and not directly on them is what saved them. Doesn't matter how many people are getting nailed by a Lightning strike in that situation, they don't make a single circuit, amps kill, each individual person is getting hit by the same amps, it's not spread out between them, they're just getting hit by what was sent their way.
@@nashocheese Exactly. The combined resistance of the players' bodies are LESS than the individual bodies as they form parallel circuit. 1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3 + ... The total current is larger and they all got the same voltage across their bodies. Amps kill, not volts. Another scenario is a group of kids touching an electric fence. The kids hold each other's hands. All but one are ungrounded. Here, they form a series circuit where combined resistance is the sum of resistances of the individual bodies, resulting in minuscule current. The kids escaped unharmed. You can look up a video of that on CZcams.
That was weird. People were literally 20 feet away from the lightning bolt, they got real lucky. I remember lightning hit the front yard of the house across the street from mine. Let me tell you, it was LOUD!
If this keeps on happening, maybe you should become a lawyer in the future and make a rule that outdoor football matches are canceled during a thunderstorm, but only the indoors football matches will resume as usual.
Yeah, i was about a kilometer away from a little wooded area on middle of the field and when the lightning hit, i just saw a light and a loud fucking noise came after that. There was only field between the lightning and me so there was basically nothing to supress it...
Don’t forget that Lightning can transfer through the ground so the people dropping some or all could have felt the shock as it swiftly moved through the ground
Lightning struck I-90 right in front of me, in Idaho one night three years ago. I was about forty-five minutes outside of Spokane heading west. I've seen lightning strikes before, but I never saw lightning strike pavement like that. It was about two in the morning and I was blinded for a couple seconds. I knew what it was right away, and was thankful it didn't hit my u-haul. I know you're supposed to be insulated, but what I saw looked powerful enough to destroy my battery and melt my tires.
I heard the story in the town near my town, there was a lightning stike on the field and 2 teenage boys were injured, first dead then the coach revived them, and one 16 year old boy died... this happened a couple of weeks ago.
I have to admit that Americans switched the football and soccer names to be rebellious. The meaning of football would, based on what it is made of, be "A game involving kicking the ball with your foot" while Soccer would be "A game where you soc(k) or hit your opponent" but Americans decided that American Football would be a game where you hit people, and that we would call a game where you kick the ball, Soccer. Sorry world for screwing it up, but we're Americans and free to do what we want. :)

That was probably loud enough to break there ear drums, trust me I've been close enough to lightning to know how painfully loud it can be, and they where within a few meters of it.

Thunder loud and close enough can painfully damage your hearing, but what I would be more worried about is the way lightning travels along the ground and is capable of injuring or killing multiple people at once, from a single strike that didn't even directly hit anyone. It's hard to tell from the video but it looks very possible the lightning struck the field amid the players, and they are fortunate if none of them died.

They're over-reacting, I've been that close to lighting and it was kind of more like a jumpscare, not a devastating blow. It didn't hurt (except for the weird static feeling.) Yeah... it was a Hershey Park, I was in a cell, had to make a run for it in order to get inside the gift shop.
Lightning is powerful enough to travel across the wet ground and knock someone unconscious a hundred feet away. Your own single experience isn't enough to conclude that these people are "overreacting".
