  • ‘The Last Mahout' is a cinematic short film produced and shot by Panasonic ambassador and wildlife filmmaker Tania Esteban about Vee & Mae - two that share an unbreakable bond built on love and trust. Vee, an 80-year-old Mahout, has been with Mae Mahn since she was born over 27 years ago - and ONLY uses his VOICE to guide her. A non-riding, no chains, non-stick wielding way forward into the 21st century. Mahn is a matriarch Asian elephant in her prime, and so the MandaLao and WWF Laos team are looking at the incredible Nam Phouy national park as a potential release site to allow individuals like her to breed in the wild as well as rescue elephants. Mae is one of the lucky ones... join them for a day in the life of a modern Mahout.
    Tania: “I cannot thank the amazing people who helped me out on location at the Mandalo Conservation Sanctuary enough, they do such remarkable and revolutionary work to help mistreated and dwindling populations of wild elephants - a first of their kind in the country. I especially want to thank Michael Vogler (founder of Mandalao), Prasop Tipprasert (director of MandaLao), Khamkhoun Khounboline (from WWF Laos), Gregorio Rojas & Keum Houngduangchanh (guide/translator), and of course the superstars themselves - the effervescent Vee and Mae Mahn. And a huge thanks to Richard Collins who made the characters and essence of the forest come to life with his magical music and original score, as well as Panasonic for giving me the opportunity to create the film.
    "Really hope you enjoy watching it as much as I did filming and piecing this story together!"

    Tania, the old man and the elephant are tight and trusting with each other, weren't you concerned
    about your safety when you were so close to this huge animal? Did the animal act aggressive to
    you at any time? You weren't scared at anytime? And yes, this footage is stunning.

    • @taniaesteban5054
      @taniaesteban5054  Před 5 lety +11

      Thanks very much for your kind comments! The GH5 is indeed a remarkable camera - the colour science is superb and the V-Log L capabilities gives you the latitude to work with much greater range in the grade. But getting your settings right at the start of filming and you can honestly capture everything you need without the need to do much in post. Knowing what shots you need to build the story sequence and the overarching narrative is the key to any film - but the tools you use and kit is also vitally important in creating your style. But yes the 10 bit 4:2:2 really comes into its own, and paired with the Atomos Inferno external recorder makes it incredibly efficient to work with. Hope you keep your GH5, and enjoy creating!!

      Hi Rasi, thank you very much for your kind words - it was a delight to produce and shoot! The GH5 is truly an astounding piece of kit, and one that I have very much enjoyed using to tell and share stories. The GH5s is also very impressive with it's dual native ISO. For 'The Last Mahout' you're right, I shot in VLog-L, not HLG this time (although it's equally superb using the Atomos inferno). I graded/colour corrected using the Blackmagic micro panel to bring out the natural colours, for the interview; 4K 10 bit 400mbs, and for the off speed shots 4K/60fps. Are you a user yourself?

Yes I do take the GH5 with me on every trip - the quality of the codec, compactability means it's a no brainer for most of my trips and personal projects. I still use it in conjunction with other cameras though such as the new S series now (the S1H) and the higher spec cameras (Varicams) for long lens work. It just depends on what I'm filming (birds from very far away or close up animals that requires gimbal shots with mirrorless cameras). I am an ambassador for Panasonic Lumix :) ! Good luck with your project and I hope you enjoy the GH5, please let me know if you have any questions regarding settings etc.

      Thank you for your comment, and yes you're quite right thanks for spotting! Will upload the corrected version. I've another film in post production now using Panasonic gear which I'm very excited to share with you all soon :) But here is a link to my vimeo page which is where I post more of my videos: vimeo.com/taniaroseesteban. Yes you're right, the drone shots were taken with the Phantom 4 Pro which hopefully complemented the GH5 shots. Hope you stay safe from this virus wherever you might be in the world - we'll all be looking forward to the day we can get back out there and start filming again! Best wishes, Tania

    Wow! Didn’t expect such quality on CZcams and from the GH5. May I ask what your background in filmmaking is?
    And any tips on how to grade the GH5? With davinci but also premiere perhaps. The colors are absolutely amazing!

      Hi SteashEdits, many thanks for your lovely comment! What's your background in? Yes, I trained and studied for a undergraduate degree in Zoology before doing a Masters in Wildlife Filmmaking in Bristol, I then got work at the BBC as a researcher where I learned from professionals, with a majority of my camerawork experience being learned by actually going out in the field and shooting. I also work for Panasonic as a brand ambassador and so am always looking for that next exciting story to share and film! Thanks! GH5 is great to grade, although the colour science in it is superb and little needs doing in terms of colour correction. I use Davinci and their micropanel which makes grading so much easier. I shot in V Log L, and found this video by wolfcrow very helpful, he's great at explaining the technical aspects of it too: czcams.com/video/ydgarm_kQeM/video.html . My advice for grading would be set your tone and ALWAYS relate it back to the story and what you're trying to tell your audience. How do you want your audience to react/feel at a certain story beat? Scared? Happy? Disturbed? Warm? Cold? It may sound obvious but so many people forget this element when they grade and focus on getting the latest look from a hollywood movie to try and simply say they've graded it. I went for a simple grade to match the true colours I saw on location, but it's a very subjective thing is colour....that's what makes it fun to play with! Hope you get out and enjoy making your own films, thanks again for watching! :)

      Hi John, apologies for my delay I've been away again! Huge thanks for your lovely comments, really do appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. This camera is seriously incredible, and one of the most compact systems you can take with you on your travels. Yes indeed, the GH5s low light performance is very impressive indeed, very useful in Jungle/forest environments. I've done a few tests on my Vimeo page you can have a look at: vimeo.com/279151519. Anything in particular you were keen to know about?

      Thank you Sellican! Yes indeed the beautiful Leica 15mm f1.7 lens....absolutely LOVE it. Perfect for stylistic shallow DOF shots, super sharp, fast and brilliant for shooting in cities at night or in jungles (low light).

      Hi Dame, thank you so much for taking the time to watch! Yes indeed :) here are the specs I shot in which varied when I was shooting on a gimbal Vs tripod, as well as when shooting different frame rates: 25P (3840 X 2160P) >> 60fps, FHD, 10bit, 60fps, (1080 X 2190 ) V-log.mov UHD 30P (4:2:2, 10 bit), V-Log L, 4K 60P, 10 bit, 4:2:2, 400mbs, Prores = best for high speed/slow mo shots, then with Atomos inferno to expose correctly:
      .mov UHD/HLG 30P (4:2:2, 10 bit), V-Log L. Mostly in 4K though!
