I own both the R6 and S5, but man, there is just something about that image quality coming out of the S5. And having the possibility to record RAW video paired with a Ninja V is just awesome. The S5 is indeed the best kept camera secret, as mentioned by Patrick Tomasso!

Hey Sam, fellow S5 user here. Love the content and really wish more people would take a chance on this camera. I will say, I have also used it for vlogging and have gotten great results with the Cine-D2 profile. Personally, still gives enough info for adjustments, while being a much quicker turnaround than Vlog. Vlog is definitely the go to for any other projects however.

You are definitely spot on with the fact that marketing plays a huge part as to why more people aren't using the S5. I also think it is an excellent value but since all the big youtubers hate on the autofocus, people stay away. I am actually trying to decide between this and the bmpcc 4k.
Yeh it’s a shame really because it’s so affordable and I think people including myself have spent a lot of money on the wrong cameras in the past. I haven’t tried the BMPCC 4K but I’ve considered it and I think that’s more of a pain to get rigged up with batteries and hard drives etc and the S5 is nice and compact for vlogging AND professional use which is perfect for me. Have been using the S5 for streaming and photography since it was released and am just loving it. Mainly using it with the kit lens (also have the free Sigma 45mm), and the Sigma 150-600mm Sports lens. Gradually expanding my gear set with things like the iFootage monopod and tripod, Wimberly monogimbal etc to make my nature photography more solid. Next up for me wil be a sub 20mm lens and a 70-200 or such, just to bridge the gab I have with my lens set at this moment.
Not a vlogger - but I LOVE this camera! Other than the Autofocus (which is still absolutely usable) - this Camera absolutely holds up agains Canon and Sony, and that at about $1000 cheaper.

Panasonic colour is just amazing! I remember using the gh5 and gh5s before getting the a7iii. It was amazing, the colours straight out of camera were superb and this is like 3 years ago and the gh5 is even older! Panasonic are the brand that doesn't seem to shout loud enough but they should

Hey! So did you end up switching to A7C? I'm deciding between getting a sony A7C and a S5 for vlogging. Out of all the features and differences I feel like, for a lack of better words the footage out of Sony is creamier and richer. But at the same time S5 in terms of dynamic range, low-light performance is on par with Sony A7S iii, so it's punching way above it's weight class in almost all other domains (except auto focus, ofcourse). Would appreciate your suggestions. Thanks.
I have the S5 and I use it for vlogging. I used to film in 60fps but now do 24fps with a 180 degree shutter angle. Many people can pull off 60fps but not 24fps with the shutter angle

I spent time testing Lumix S5 as Panasonic sent me one and I’d agree with you about how good the camera is except that if you already have EF lenses the I think the value of getting a R6 still trumps it outside of the dynamic range. I would have bought it except for the l mount. I could have lived with the auto focus but if you want a decent fast lens on the l mount you’ll more than pay more than the R6. Great video! Love that you’re looking at the Lumix cameras. Love your work 👍

Love that video. Just got a S5 plus Kit lens for 1050€ which is such a bargain and all that because the Mark II came out. The Mark II definitely is an upgrade but video and foto quality is the same so and with your tipps I can use it very unproblematic. Also I dont know but I guess there have been quite some updates. It's amazing how many people criticise Panasonic's Auto Focus and then don't have it set correctly for what they're shooting. I think non-users don't realise how much it can be customised and how big an impact that has on how the autofocus behaves.
Been using the g9 as hybrid camera and its unreal for the money. New firmware even gave it workable autofocus for vlogging. Been dreaming of the Sony because you tube makes you feel like you need full frame, but honestly, I’m still happy on mft, and love the size. I’m curious how g9 footage would mix with the S5. You’ve got me eyeing this over the Sony now.
It’s such a great camera. I guess the Sony has more slow motion specs but that’s only good if you use that a lot. Image wise, in my opinion this is far better. (Not being paid to say anything. This is my opinion) Thanks for watching. 🤩🙏🏻
There is the weight, size, and price to consider. Some places won't allow you to vlog with a big pro camera. DJI Pocket 1 or 2 maybe for example a better alternative
It seems like the main problem with the camera is the color science. Everything looks really washed out desaturated like some kind of a long profile people want nice colors right at the camera.

Actually the auto-focus on the GH5MII responds equally as well, if not better with Locked On -2/ Speed +4. I am fairly certain the IBIS is better too. My hopes for the future of the GH series, is for it to have a similar form factor to the S5. The teasers for the GH6 places the model type label in the same location as the S5… …

I watched a bunch of your videos and they are getting better each video. The s5 looks very tempting, but I am pretty spoiled with the prores workflow of my bmpcc4k. Do you create proxy files when editing? And how are you liking the s5 after all of these months?
Hi. Thanks for watching 🤩🙏🏻 I’m pleased you’re enjoying the videos. Yeh I’m on a 2017 Mac so having to create proxies. Doesn’t take long with FCPX. Not as bad as with premiere back in the day 😂 I sometimes use prores when using the ninja v monitor and that’s cool. LOVE the S5 still. Incredible camera. I’ve learned to live the small amount of draw backs and still consider it one of the best cameras I’ve used.

I own it and even though specs are better than Sony and Canon (depending on camera) for video, the auto focus is an issue unless you keep it at manual. In good faith I cannot personally recommend it for video work where auto focus is required as it works most of the time but fails at times making the footage unusable. For image work though it is really good. I like it over the Sony. I would hate to move away from Panasonic but they are making it hard. First chance I get I MAY get out of this system and that is only because of auto focus. I really do hope they add PhaseDetect to the next model so I can happily stay in this system.
Since my Macbook and iPhone support HDR I switched to 10 Bit HLG. The quality is so incredible and the colors look perfect. Where possible I confirm the AF Tracking which improves the AF even more. He explains how, quite easy: czcams.com/video/apyAzQ0w7MI/video.html

i own a g85 and i'm looking for an upgrade and the s5 is looking like the camera for me just don't like the recording limit. I guess i could always buy a Atmos ninja and that should solve that problem right ?

Hello Sam, great video. I have been considering swithcing to the S5. I have the Xt4 and the Gh5 as my A cam and B cam but trying to match F-Log and V-Log in post is a nightmare. If it is part of your workflow, how difficult is it to match the S5 with diffent brands?

@@SamHolland thank you. Actually lol I had watched your video before,but i wasn't sure how to work the settings for exposure and all that,like zebras and what not. Definitely the tip about audio helped me. Because the background noise was horrible with the settings I had. It seems that what I need now is a better set up,better lights. I will play around some more with the settings, the videos are coming out too grany and too sharp,even with lots of natural light coming from a window and 2 umbrellas.

I don't think is better than the R6 with that contrast AF... pulsing background, for sure that's what holding them back every famous CZcamsr loves this camera but the AF is not good at all
At least in my little part of western Canada, Panasonic shooters are kinda dropping like flies because it feels like they don't even bother trying to sell their cameras here. They have no stock in any store with no demo cameras to try out or look at. They barely bother to pay for an A5 size sheet of advertising. Hell I'm an Olympus shooter originally that wants to get more into night photography/videos and a couple Panasonic shooters at my local store were just straight up pushing me to get the A7iii because Panasonic support here is kinda abysmal. My special order for the S5 is expected to take 1 month while on the other hand I could have gotten any Sony, Canon, Nikon, or Olympus camera right there in store or 2-3 days shipping.
That’s a shame. To be honest, we only have a very small selection of budget/beginner camera equipment in stores. It’s pointless going in to be fair. So I get everything online and if I want to test it, I’ll use a camera hire company. Thanks for watching 🤩🙏🏻🎥

Sam how easy is filming in vlog. Im not really an expert in grading all I tend to do is video in a flat profile then pull some contrast out in post. PS - Josh Cameron does so great videos on the S5.
Hi Mark. To be honest I’m used to c log and its gonna take me a little extra time to really make the colours how I want them BUT the process I used is, v log correction LUT (from the website) then dialled back the intensity a little and then added my own colour grade and LUT on top. I’ll have to tweak a little as I get used to it but with practise it’s easy. I hope that helps. Stick around as I’ll be doing plenty more videos on this camera as I learn more. Love that video. Just got a S5 plus Kit lens for 1050€ which is such a bargain and all that because the Mark II came out. The Mark II definitely is an upgrade but video and foto quality is the same so and with your tipps I can use it very unproblematic. Also I dont know but I guess there have been quite some updates. Opening statements so damn true
It's amazing how many people criticise Panasonic's Auto Focus and then don't have it set correctly for what they're shooting. I think non-users don't realise how much it can be customised and how big an impact that has on how the autofocus behaves.

Been using the g9 as hybrid camera and its unreal for the money. New firmware even gave it workable autofocus for vlogging. Been dreaming of the Sony because you tube makes you feel like you need full frame, but honestly, I’m still happy on mft, and love the size. I’m curious how g9 footage would mix with the S5. You’ve got me eyeing this over the Sony now.
It’s such a great camera. I guess the Sony has more slow motion specs but that’s only good if you use that a lot. Image wise, in my opinion this is far better. (Not being paid to say anything. This is my opinion)

There is the weight, size, and price to consider. Some places won't allow you to vlog with a big pro camera. DJI Pocket 1 or 2 maybe for example a better alternative
It’s also really great for stills! It’s a really wonderful hybrid system, especially in its price segment.
It seems like the main problem with the camera is the color science. Everything looks really washed out desaturated like some kind of a long profile people want nice colors right at the camera.

Actually the auto-focus on the GH5MII responds equally as well, if not better with Locked On -2/ Speed +4. I am fairly certain the IBIS is better too. My hopes for the future of the GH series, is for it to have a similar form factor to the S5. The teasers for the GH6 places the model type label in the same location as the S5…

Yeh I’m on a 2017 Mac so having to create proxies. Doesn’t take long with FCPX. Not as bad as with premiere back in the day 😂
I sometimes use prores when using the ninja v monitor and that’s cool.
LOVE the S5 still. Incredible camera. I’ve learned to live the small amount of draw backs and still consider it one of the best cameras I’ve used.

I own it and even though specs are better than Sony and Canon (depending on camera) for video, the auto focus is an issue unless you keep it at manual. In good faith I cannot personally recommend it for video work where auto focus is required as it works most of the time but fails at times making the footage unusable.
For image work though it is really good. I like it over the Sony.
I would hate to move away from Panasonic but they are making it hard. First chance I get I MAY get out of this system and that is only because of auto focus. I really do hope they add PhaseDetect to the next model so I can happily stay in this system.
The GH6 AF is sooooo much better. They’ll be bringing that into the next version of the S5 for sure 🤩

Since my Macbook and iPhone support HDR I switched to 10 Bit HLG. The quality is so incredible and the colors look perfect. Where possible I confirm the AF Tracking which improves the AF even more. He explains how, quite easy: czcams.com/video/apyAzQ0w7MI/video.html

i own a g85 and i'm looking for an upgrade and the s5 is looking like the camera for me just don't like the recording limit. I guess i could always buy a Atmos ninja and that should solve that problem right ?
Yeh that’s right. With the atomos there’s no limit… apart from the hard drive.

Hello Sam, great video. I have been considering swithcing to the S5. I have the Xt4 and the Gh5 as my A cam and B cam but trying to match F-Log and V-Log in post is a nightmare. If it is part of your workflow, how difficult is it to match the S5 with diffent brands?

@@SamHolland thank you. Actually lol I had watched your video before,but i wasn't sure how to work the settings for exposure and all that,like zebras and what not. Definitely the tip about audio helped me. Because the background noise was horrible with the settings I had. It seems that what I need now is a better set up,better lights. I will play around some more with the settings, the videos are coming out too grany and too sharp,even with lots of natural light coming from a window and 2 umbrellas.

Hey Sam, this might be a stupid question but how do you check exposure when using v log due to it being desaturated? Are you basically just trusting your exposure chart and histogram?

I don't think is better than the R6 with that contrast AF... pulsing background, for sure that's what holding them back every famous CZcamsr loves this camera but the AF is not good at all
I'm just wondering if the Leica SL2-S has the same autofocus performance as the Panasonic S5/S1 variants.
Well, i can see one big problem: Most people who makes videos wants a 16-35.. And Panasonics 16-35/4 is CRAZY expensive..
At least in my little part of western Canada, Panasonic shooters are kinda dropping like flies because it feels like they don't even bother trying to sell their cameras here. They have no stock in any store with no demo cameras to try out or look at. They barely bother to pay for an A5 size sheet of advertising. Hell I'm an Olympus shooter originally that wants to get more into night photography/videos and a couple Panasonic shooters at my local store were just straight up pushing me to get the A7iii because Panasonic support here is kinda abysmal. My special order for the S5 is expected to take 1 month while on the other hand I could have gotten any Sony, Canon, Nikon, or Olympus camera right there in store or 2-3 days shipping.
That’s a shame. To be honest, we only have a very small selection of budget/beginner camera equipment in stores. It’s pointless going in to be fair. So I get everything online and if I want to test it, I’ll use a camera hire company.

Autofocus doesn't work well; Actually that that's the only issues becouse overall this camera it's so good
Sam how easy is filming in vlog. Im not really an expert in grading all I tend to do is video in a flat profile then pull some contrast out in post.
PS - Josh Cameron does so great videos on the S5.
Hi Mark. To be honest I’m used to c log and its gonna take me a little extra time to really make the colours how I want them BUT the process I used is, v log correction LUT (from the website) then dialled back the intensity a little and then added my own colour grade and LUT on top. I’ll have to tweak a little as I get used to it but with practise it’s easy. I hope that helps. Stick around as I’ll be doing plenty more videos on this camera as I learn more. The S5 is superior in many ways compared to the A7III. Even the S1 is better than the new A7IV in almost everything but AF-C.
