Ha Long Bay is Overrated (Part 1)

  • After doing a 1 night 2 day cruise, our conclusion is that Ha Long Bay is overrated. It was one of the most expensive things we did in Vietnam and our least favourite. Yes, the views from the cruise are impressive, but once you get closer to the water when you go kayaking you’ll see the side of Ha Long Bay not shown on social media: all the plastic floating in the water. It is incredibly heartbreaking. We realize that maybe not everyone had this experience. Maybe it was a bad area, maybe it was bad timing, but this type of plastic is coming from somewhere and does not accumulate overnight. We really hope that this will be addressed in the future and that part of the money collected from these expensive cruises will go towards clean-up and education. There is a better area to visit in Vietnam with similar views and no plastic (we actually saw clean up crews helping maintain this area) and we had a much better experience there. Location of this place will be shared in our next post.

The tour companies are working on reducing plastic waste. They banned any packaged product sales on board. Unfortunately it is still possible to by products from locals that come by in smaller boats and we have also seen some products that tourists won’t typically buy (like packaging of frozen meals).
We hope the tour operators continue working with the government to reduce the plastic waste and to educate people!

It sparks a conversation as we can attest. If everyone filters out experiences like that, that doesn’t help either. While I’m sure that tourism unfortunately continues to the pollution, the majority of the trash we saw was from products that tourists typically would not consume. The tour operators also banned single used plastic on board a while ago, which is a great first step in the right direction.

Tourists don't leave such trash behind. On the contrary, all over South East Asia, the Caribbean and even the Mediterranean, it's often the tourists who organize clean-up drives of local beaches and invariably the locals who pollute the environment. Trying to claim the opposite is both deeply dishonest and counterproductive for the countries themselves, as they'll only lose tourists and the income tourism generates.
All of the countries of Asia need to launch long-term public education campaigns to teach their populations NOT to litter and how to keep their own environment clean and tidy.

I knew it, there's always a part 2. Btw, thank you for being honest. I completely overlooked this problem watching all the other vlogs about how beautiful some places are. And I know, I'd be super dissapointed if I went to these places, expecting paradise, and then finding all the trash.

100%. Was there for a 2 night cruise last week and there was a lot of trash in the water. Both kayaking beach/swimming trips we did everyone just spent time picking up litter from the beach and water. You wouldn’t swim in the water for the litter and also all the oil/fuel on the surface from little boats. Rubbish is from locals and fisherman eg polystyrene containers degrading, as well as just being sea debris.
