  • Raised in Vancouver and Toronto, Severn Cullis-Suzuki has been camping and hiking all her life. When she was 9 she started the Environmental Children's Organization (ECO), a small group of children committed to learning and teaching other kids about environmental issues. They were successful in many projects before 1992, when they raised enough money to go to the UN's Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Their aim was to remind the decision-makers of who their actions or inactions would ultimately affect. The goal was reached when 12 yr old Severn closed a Plenary Session with a powerful speech that received a standing ovation.

And almost 30 years later. We planted more trees than ever; the ozone has been repaired; the costal cities still thrive and more than 50% of the world have left poverty, which is unprecedented in our entire human history of roughly 100 thousands years. Hope this bring you a smile

Our teacher told up to search up this. She said it was a amazing speech of mankind. She said at least for ten seconds everyone would feel touched. She uses her position as a child to touch everyone in their heart. I think the our teacher was right.

Today, June 10th, I have been given the privilege of reading Severn Suzuki's speech at Soul Food, at the State Library in Victoria, Melbourne. Anything that raise students awareness is great because students' are the ones who can make an impact on the world at large. The change has to come somewhere and it starts from respecting one's planet.

This speech sent shivers up my spine more times than any other video. Why has her message gone unheard like so many others? For all those wanting an answer, here it is: People are selfish. They care only about themselves. That is a rule everyone should follow. If you know that, meeting those that actually care about others means so much more.

Instead of casting stones out of guilt for what you don't do, and what she doesn't do...Do what you can. If we all do what we can and forgive ourselves, and others, for what we haven't done, we will achieve a better world to live in, which is what she is speaking about. This girl (who is by now a woman) is choosing to be a part of the solution instead of part of the problem. She is attempting to inspire us to do better...so lets do!

Its time to open our eyes and see. It is time to change OUR own environment- and its never too late to change. Every act leads us to the future we get tomorrow. Every act counts. Go to your cities and environments and ask how you can help and how you can change things to the better, on the project you love to work in. Its your and its my tomorrow and we will be in it. I hope so much we can still enjoy our wonderful creations of our nature on planet earth tomorrow! Love, Sunyela

When I was 12 years old, in 1974, we also talked of these things. Strangely, as child we feel like this. When we grow up we 'first' think of our education, then our career, then our children .. and forget all of this. Sometimes I think because I'm childless, I'm one of those that still has the time to worry about these big problems. Paradoxically, if people have fewer children, they will have more time to worry about the future of the children, that are not theirs.

It remains evident that sharing, justice and peace are the principles that need to be fully addressed by all. There is no time for debate and discussion on the global warming, starvation, war, crime and other crimes against humanity. This young woman sees clearly past many of the mesmerized adults fed on market forces and commercialization. Materialism is killing the planet. A spiritualization of all the organizations is most important in order to see clearly beyond the hatred of others.

What is the framing of my question? Is it odd? If so in what way? The "or not" part does not need to be there, remove it if it seems odd to you. I didn't make a statement or a point, I asked a question out of curiosity! Do you know the answer to the question or are you just analysing the question and assuming I am making a point? Actually I find your questions very 'odd' now I think about it.
