- Raised in Vancouver and Toronto, Severn Cullis-Suzuki has been camping and hiking all her life. When she was 9 she started the Environmental Children's Organization (ECO), a small group of children committed to learning and teaching other kids about environmental issues. They were successful in many projects before 1992, when they raised enough money to go to the UN's Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Their aim was to remind the decision-makers of who their actions or inactions would ultimately affect. The goal was reached when 12 yr old Severn closed a Plenary Session with a powerful speech that received a standing ovation.

And almost 30 years later. We planted more trees than ever; the ozone has been repaired; the costal cities still thrive and more than 50% of the world have left poverty, which is unprecedented in our entire human history of roughly 100 thousands years. Hope this bring you a smile
"How dare you!"
Our teacher told up to search up this. She said it was a amazing speech of mankind. She said at least for ten seconds everyone would feel touched. She uses her position as a child to touch everyone in their heart. I think the our teacher was right.
She is amazing. I have an endless amount of respect for her!
I am in cheer awe. This girl made my heart bleed and opened not my eyes but also my awareness to our environment. Such a strong 12 year-old girl with such an urging cause. Bravo miss Severn Suzuki.
"You are what you do, not what you say!!!!" --i'm with you, simply always, my friends. Peace.
that was an amazing speech. right in their face and forward, just what we need. I read about this speech in one of Suzuki's books. but listening to it was awsome.
this is very touching
That was a very powerful and influential speech.
One of the greatest speeches I ever heard in my lifetime. I am now 45 years old.
This world needs more people like her!
Today, June 10th, I have been given the privilege of reading Severn Suzuki's speech at Soul Food, at the State Library in Victoria, Melbourne. Anything that raise students awareness is great because students' are the ones who can make an impact on the world at large. The change has to come somewhere and it starts from respecting one's planet.
i was recently in a musical for peace child international and my character was named after Severn. she's a wonderful and intelegent human being and now i finally understand how one person can make a big difference.
this is a very true speech even if i'm not already born on 1992 it still touches my heart.
i wish teachers is showing us this kind of videos..
who ever disliked this doesn't deserve to share a planet with us !!
I teared up listening to this speech and the fact that nothing has changed today makes it even sadder
This was a beautiful speech
how can people honestly dislike this?
we could carry this on forever, everyone has there beliefs, everyone thinks differently that's what makes the world go around.
20 years on... nothing has changed.
This was a girl who was small, but had a big voice. Severn Suzuki is a amazing woman.
The World Is Not A Vicious Place
It's Just The Way We've Been Raised
This was on 1992, and 20 years later! The earth still damn!
OMG, why haven´t I seen this before? Nothing has gotten better! I have!!! Strong speach, soo young too... I´m donating money to the Swedish cooperation "doctors without borders", at least that´s something! True in speration! Keep it up!
She's in British Columbia, Canada and is a recognized author and speaker and activist for the David Suzuki Foundation. She is David Suzuki's daughter. She will be 30 years old this year.
This speech sent shivers up my spine more times than any other video. Why has her message gone unheard like so many others? For all those wanting an answer, here it is: People are selfish. They care only about themselves. That is a rule everyone should follow. If you know that, meeting those that actually care about others means so much more.
wow, she was a good speaker for such a young age
This girl really is..wow!a small girl talking about the environment really deserves some compliment!
We need more people like her in our fallen world.. But hopefully the younger generation will be the ones to make changes in the next 100 years for our world the future is in them...
Parabéns! Severn Suzuki.
Instead of casting stones out of guilt for what you don't do, and what she doesn't do...Do what you can. If we all do what we can and forgive ourselves, and others, for what we haven't done, we will achieve a better world to live in, which is what she is speaking about. This girl (who is by now a woman) is choosing to be a part of the solution instead of part of the problem. She is attempting to inspire us to do better...so lets do!
Can someone tell me how the song at the end is called??? Thx
i cry. Cry becuz she's in my age. And I cry because all the things the people do today. Hope one day, the trees are back, and people can stop ruining this beautiful gift from God. Thnx Severn, you give us a very very beautiful lesson.
Right with you on that!!
And here we are, some 23 years later, still not listening. This amazing speech could easily be about the way we behave today.
WHEN WILL WE LEARN? When it's too late I'm afraid to say.
Too true!!! She 30 BY NOW
More than 20 years later and you people are still wrong. The overestimations of climate change are vast.
inspiring girl and still making a difference in the fight of our generation.
Looking forward to v3 in 27 years!
Its time to open our eyes and see. It is time to change OUR own environment- and its never too late to change. Every act leads us to the future we get tomorrow. Every act counts. Go to your cities and environments and ask how you can help and how you can change things to the better, on the project you love to work in. Its your and its my tomorrow and we will be in it. I hope so much we can still enjoy our wonderful creations of our nature on planet earth tomorrow! Love, Sunyela
yes it's true...i can't help but cry..but crying isn't the solution..it's not too late.
what is the name of the song in the end of the report?
When I was 12 years old, in 1974, we also talked of these things. Strangely, as child we feel like this. When we grow up we 'first' think of our education, then our career, then our children .. and forget all of this. Sometimes I think because I'm childless, I'm one of those that still has the time to worry about these big problems. Paradoxically, if people have fewer children, they will have more time to worry about the future of the children, that are not theirs.
She did, and yes, she is.
It doesnt matter what she is doing now,her words speak the only truth that we need to see and do something about it.
If you don't know how to fix it, stop breaking it. Such a simple, yet powerful statement.
i remember her cuz of my cousin's post at FB...now she's an adult but Earth is beyond screwed up already. it feels sad to know she's still fighting up to this date and the adults then never listened.
Is there a way to get the written text of this speech? Thanks for your help!
how can someone dislike this?
How could it be that im doing work about the government etc.. then became bored.. with nothing new to write about I decided to browse youtube, and by luck, i accidently clicked on a link that took me here.. :D What a great speech!!! And how it then helped me do my work!! if only there was more people like this.. how could it be that there is still not a big enough change after this powerful speech?! They should have shown it to the WORLD at that time, not wait for CZcams to be invented!
she is truly better than us...
i met her. she came to our recycling club meeting w/ other schools.
really? I like the way she delivered it, spot on
It remains evident that sharing, justice and peace are the principles that need to be fully addressed by all. There is no time for debate and discussion on the global warming, starvation, war, crime and other crimes against humanity. This young woman sees clearly past many of the mesmerized adults fed on market forces and commercialization. Materialism is killing the planet. A spiritualization of all the organizations is most important in order to see clearly beyond the hatred of others.
You can get the Transcript of this under the video next add too. you can then try to copy and paste this, i've tried this and it works ok.
the framing of your question isn't odd? with "or not"? i'd like to know what your point is, if you please.
Idris nechirvan barzani - کوڕەکەی نێچیرڤان بارزانی l
Listen to this speech he is a young men from kurdistan ,iraq he is really behind solving all problems specialy education for the poor famileis and orphans those who they ate suffered much he is really a golden boy listen to his speech in one youth world confrenece 2013 ...
not matter who wrote it she delivered it beautifully. It was clear and to the point. yet isnt it amazing that nothings really been done and some might even say something has then how much more have we done to harm our so called environment,
"Make your actions reflect your words."
PEOPLE. this video is 20 years old....Why are we not listening?
Wow what a brilliant speech

Superb

this really really true. people always do the things which tell us not to do.
@KaltundKlar thatz cuz we all should come together as one and fight for what we want!! dont think negative, think about your kids, or your own future!! well who knows.. maybe we wont have a future!!
found this In a Friedman book, wow.. i shed tears, 20 years later, we are still doing the same shit

Now, 27 years ago, and we have yet another young child give this speech at the UN. Alas, the largest polluters (plastic dumped into the ocean) still occurs.
Greetings! Did anyone find it with german subtitles? I didn´t and will translate it if it does not exist in german yet.
@JeffersonDinedAlone She gave the speech in Rio I believe.
LOL "KNOM SENG?!" nice... I love this speech. It's the only thing I've heard from Severn but am a "friend" of her dad's foundation.
People go on and on complaining that there's just so much to fix we can't just start fixing things now.
Ok but if we keep saying that forever, we'll never get ANYTHING done and the world will just keep getting worse and worse!
We need to start somewhere. All these people commenting here are supporters of what Severn believes in.
Let's team up and make the world a better place.
What is the framing of my question? Is it odd? If so in what way? The "or not" part does not need to be there, remove it if it seems odd to you. I didn't make a statement or a point, I asked a question out of curiosity! Do you know the answer to the question or are you just analysing the question and assuming I am making a point? Actually I find your questions very 'odd' now I think about it.
@Hennesg do you mean, USA citizen, right? :)
thanks, that works
She was once again at Rio + 20 Conference.
Amen to that:)
wow.
19 anos se passaram e nada mudou...
Watch this song Electric dB - Insouciance .
This song bring me here.
"si grandes palabras y gran silencio pero como siempre palabras que terminaron en un saco sin fondo esto fue en 1992 y la verdad no digo ke no sirviera de nada que este grupo hiciera y dijeran lo ke tenian ke decir pero si es verdad que como siempre el ser humano ha de tener alguna tara que le impide reaccionar cuando otro le intenta abrir los ojos"
so god damn true.
Yes, tell them the truth. Sebastian Sturm is such a great reggae singer. Listen to him! :)
So, anyone know if she has heard about The Venus Project and The Zeitgeist Movement?
Astounding, the truth hurts, keep telling it
Holy shit.. That speech gives me shivers down my spine. Everything she says is true - perhaps that is why..
And the fact that she could write such an amazing speech at such a young age? Unbelievable! And the look on the adults faces!!
17 years have past since this speech was spoken to the world.. But I look at the world and see that not much has changed... And it's even more shamefull with the technological advancements we have.
I too am young, but can see exactly what she is saying..
yes you are
Why didn't we hear this at the time? Why did it take 15 years and the invention of CZcams for this to reach the people!!
i just found out she has a page in wikipedia :]
she is an environmental activist .
she is still trying to make a change !
This speech is from 15 years ago - has anything been done?
I hope my children are like this girl.
my dad recommended me to listen to the speech and i actually love it. She is only few years younger than me and she sounds very firm and intellectual. Reading other comments, i have also noticed that she DOES sound a bit...i guess impossible/
by the way i saw a lot of comments by SPLEEAH, srry but can you use some easier words? It's hard to understand in a ESL person's view....hahah jkjk
Power, just power. It gets to leaders head
all the politicians, businessmen, organizers who were touched by this girl, who cried after her words, after the summit, they just kept on doing what they were already doing. that is the real shame.
Semantics.
I'm not blind and even if I was I could still tell by the sound of her voice.
Sigh.
epic girl..
She's graduated with a degree in ecology and evolutionary biology and evolutionary biology from Yale and pretty much going around advocating for green policies still.
This is FYI for others (Amelies78 will never eat her words).
In “Occupying Chairlifts” a simple rule tweak on inheritance ends up changing the direction and purpose of modern human life! Here’s a fair way to transition forward to where we’re rewarded for cooperating and creating instead of competing and conquering.
It's something specific we can demand. If this isnt the best answer, at least we’re thinking about what might be. Are we really just this close to having it work right?
Oh yeah, it's a Ski movie! “Occupying Chairlifts” on CZcams!
Listening to her say we "buy it throw away, lets start to conserve". the biggest energy wasters are the most popular appliances. washing machine dryer, and refrigerator. Who wants to be the first to give these up? If it is you, like my comment
well... yeah I agree
its correct i like it
Her words are whipping every greedy souls.
