30 Years before Greta Thunberg: The girl that moved the UN | DW News

  • Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg began her push for action on climate change in August 2018. Since then her lone voice has inspired the roar of millions. Greta's impassioned speech at the UN made headlines around the world, but it wasn't the first time a very young person stood in front of international leaders and pled for action on an impending environmental catastrophe. In 1992, Severn Cullis-Suzuki, then just twelve years old, gave a speech at the UN with the same sense of urgency as Greta's speech in 2019. So what is Severn up to now?

    In 1992, Severn Suzuki's speech at the UN Earth Summit inspired world leaders to work together to fix the hole in the ozone layer. Do you think Greta's speech can do the same for climate change?

    Good news is progress has been made and technology is there for a greener earth. but time may not be on humankind side. Let me emphasise, the earth will always be here and will recover. Humans may not be and its a pity we are taking species with us. Anyway I know a lot of people ( including myself) are doing their bit. Thats all we can do.

    The problem of many young activists who are being brought up on the stage to be the symbol of green movement, is that they are mostly passionate but not having the endurance of remaining in the fight and they loose their resilience. maybe because they are not genuine enough,it is more like a mood but it goes away fast.

NO ;did we stop using oil? NO. See the problem here,we face this challenges a long long time ago, but we didn't do anything; just bla bla bla bla. We are done, we didn't learn our lessons

    Funny thing the hole in the o-Zone layer didn’t get bigger. Same with Climate Change it was been discussed over 40 years and been rebranded to different things and the doomsday date kept getting pushed back. What has changed that people are more environmentally conscious, people actually recycle now a days and technology has advanced for a greener economy compare to the past. But most people seem to overlooked that. We have electric cars now, solar panels, wind power turbine, we even have composting for trash facilities.
    Also if these Climate Change alarmist understand how the world works. Even if you forced all the first world to stop using fossils fuel it won’t change much. The climate will still change. Sadly these kind of people are actually the ones who fear change.
    Even before human industrialization, climate change will happen if you like it or like. Mass extinction does happen even if all the humans don’t exist in this world. Instead of fearing for the end of the world why not adapt to the changes. Even animals adapt to the changes. All the so called mass extinction because of climate change also didn’t factor in interspecies breeding and evolution and adaption. There are also newer species of animals being discovered everyday.
    Look back in history before fossil fuel before the industrial revolution. How many ice ages the earth dealt with? How many global droughts the earth dealt with? How many mass extinction the earth dealt with? We aren’t the first humanoids, other humanoids went extinct before us and this was before technology.
    Also the earth was way hotter before humanity came into the picture. It was hotter in the past. I guess people don’t see that. Most just fear change that the earth is changing. Well the greatest thing about humanity is we learn to adapt and survive at least historically it said so. But people seems to fear the world and their changes.

      @computerworks1075 Před 4 lety

      You're missing the point. Of course the Earth's climate has been changing naturally, and it will continue to change naturally for the rest of its lifespan. I mean really, how can it not? But now, human activity is also changing the climate, and not for the better. What's telling is that natural warming and cooling periods occurred very, very gradually over thousands or even millions of years. Right now, the global climate is warming about 170 times faster than any previous natural warming period before humans came along.

    • @CrimsonEclipse
      @CrimsonEclipse Před 4 lety

      Computerworks you also missed the point of how humanity has advanced over the years to be more environmentally conscious and choose to care about green technology and developing green technology that didn’t exist decades ago. The many developed countries technically has the cleanest air in the world. Just look at the global air pollution charts. Just look at how we live in a cleaner environment than when the industrial revolution happened in the first world.
      The difference is now many developing countries are in there industrial revolution. That they are trying to develop there quality of life to meet the first world standards of life expectancy.
      People now a days don’t died as young as they used to be. These children would actually have to grow up faster and work for a living to just survive.
      Maybe the problem is over population since the most polluted countries are the ones that are overpopulated. When places are over populated they also has more consumers.
      Think about that! How would you solve that. Would you forced majority of the developing world to go into poverty? Would you want them to have life expectancy.

    This wasn't heard then, and too little has changed in the intervening years ; those that should have listened then had their ears so far up the backsides of Corporate Profiteers that it didn't matter who might have been talking. Children are told they " are the future " and yet , when they try to responsibly speak what's on their hearts and minds they are told they " don't understand" . Greta's Message isn't plagiarism , it's the Loop of Warning that those with the ability to make change happen, refuse to hear now, as back then. God Help Us.

      They support and promote current renewable tech because it is extremely sporadic and inefficient (10-30%). They are helping to build it because it absolutely necessitates that we have fossil fuel back up - so they profit twice. Solar and Wind farms are also extremely damaging to local ecologies and cost consumers more. Any one who cares about realistic solutions is for current nuclear and developing fusion tech.
