- Here's a confession: I'm starting to come around on the idea of Universes Beyond. Lord of the Rings was a great set, I'm shamelessly looking forward to the Final Fantasy product next year, and, like it or not, Universes Beyond are happening whether all of us collectively like it or not, so today, we're looking at 3 Universes Beyond sets I would actually love to see.

I just want a Discworld set. So many memorable characters, artifacts and lands. Death, Susan, the witches, the luggage, carrot, rincewind, unseen university, the watch, vetinari, the librarian etc. Plenty of guilds and races you could make cards for. It'd be perfect for mtg.
The Discworld would be perfect for the first Universes Beyond set to be printed with silver borders, and anyone who would poopoo on that proposal can die mad about how wrong we all know they are.

Vetinari could be an interesting commander. He's described as having arranged Ankh-Morpork into a reality which includes him as Patrician is slightly better than one which he isn't, so he should be some kind of group hug commander. A friendlier Praetor ?

Steel Chair - Equipment - Equipped creature has tap: deal 2 damage to target creature and puts a stun counter on it.

The dark tower universe is a set of custom cards my friends and I made and have been playing with for years! Roland, Jake, Eddie, Susannah and Oy are all commanders. Artifacts include Roland's guns, Eddies key, Roland's coin purse, Odetta's wheelchair, Black 13 ect. Lands include The dark tower, New York, Hambry, Gilead ect. Spells include The shine, The kid was real / No he wasn't, Eddie's taunts, Gasher's traps, ect. We have 92 cards in total.
Even beyond the Dark Tower, King's novels are very interconnected, i.e. the Man in Black/Randall Flagg showing in so many different books... So many locations that show up in multiple stories...
"Finishing Move" would also work well for Mortal Kombat as well

What about a Soulsborne Universes beyond? Hidetaka Miyazaki is a well-known MTG enjoyer and it would be a great fit.
Dragon Ball would also be fun but the cards would be ridiculous and it would feel strange after Toriyama passed away. I feel like Sailor Moon and Evangelion would be better fits for classic anime. Or Studio Ghibli, people would eat that up.

As far as casting cost / color pie, I could easily see him being Boros, or even Mardu. But then, considering his character, WUBRG could also be a way to go. KA is a wheel, after all.

I would happily buy all of a Battletech set!
- Faction tribalism (Sagas? Special ability themes? Bonuses for multiple? All of the above?)
- Mercenaries: ETB, pay (x), card counts as Faction of choice that you control.
- Mechs (creature type) with Infiltrate, Jump Jets (flying til EoT), Alpha Strike (+X strength, does not untap next)... the "equipment" special abilities are practically endless
- "Repair": Mech damage persistent through turns, can be removed by paying (1)
- Mech Speed: "Fast" (hexproof, DNT to attack), "Slow" (Can be directly attacked by Mechs that aren't Slow)
- "Salvage": Mech is destroyed, draw a card.
- Important historical figures as Commanders, offers bonus to applicable Faction.
- "Bases": Legendary Lands that lend support (repair extra dmg, sac to untap, "defender," or "artillery" to destroy opposing "bases")
I'm getting excited just thinking about it...or I just wish the old Battletech CCG was still around! 😅
The mechs would have to have very high toughness to make repair not terrible.

All i want is ones based in Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive book series. He was actually contacted by wizards about one, but it never happened. Although the secret lair for Grand Abolisher has a reference to his work, which is cool

We need a wheel of time set though. Other than lord of the rings, that’s probably the story world that most demands a world beyond set

Kamigawa 3.0 needs to have official GUNDAM mobile suits (Legendary vehicle with legendary pilot crew 1?) with legendary pilots Char, Amuro and Kamille Biden. Wizards would sell truck loads in Japan with a giant robot tie in.
Your Stephen King UB sounds awesome. Nintendo tie in might give Lord of the Rings a run for it's money because that is directly tied to childhood memories and people will spend anything to relive them.

my three:
-Star Trek. I think this one has a lot of people that want it, and there is a lot of lore to make a whole set for it. Also, Phyrexia is basically the borg.
-Monster Hunter. WOTC already worked with Capcom with Street Fighter, so I think this is the most likely. The is a lot of iconic stuff that I think would make this a commander series. Plus, it'd be an excuse to reprint some Ikoria stuff. Also, this would totally get a lot of MH fans into MTG
-Binding of Isaac, My off the wall pick. I know Edmund McMillen was an MTG fan (and even designed the card Cruel Sadist). I think it would be perhaps two commander decks (Isaac and his mother?) with an isaac deck being very aura and equipment focused. You could also do more commander decks if you based them all on the different starting isaacs.
Love monster hunter as well. So many fun monsters to make into cards.
Before I watch I'll give my 3:
Dungeons and Dragons- Dark Sun. I know it'll never ever happen but I think if they expanded the D&D sets, this one would just be incredible. It could be full of nostalgic art styles and mechanics from all across Magic's history. I really want to see another sword and sorcery inspired setting.
The Culture- Iain M. Banks's sci-fi series would make an incredible adaptation, although it would be more like Dr. Who and featuring things from across this insanely scattered series rather than being a 'story' set. Space Opera set is coming soon, so it could be done. It would also approach the phrase "artifacts matter" quite literally.
Dark Souls- I really can't be the only one who wants this. I'd actually take any of the soulsbornes. But realistically we'd probably get Dark Souls. If they can't get Dark Souls, maybe Lords of The Fallen would work with them.
Bonus: The Midnight Gospel secret lair- would be the first secret lair I ordered 4 of.
That salem's lot card legitimately turns Edgar Markov into a Mardu storm deck wherein 1-drop vampires come with a mini-dark ritual stapled to them. like... imagine Bloodtithe harvester effectively paying for himself.
This was fun and thought-provoking. I would never have thought about these IPs as potential universes beyond, so I'm glad you did.
There could totally be a draft able set based around the dark tower series and now I won’t be satisfied until we get it
Young Link/Adult Link. R U G
2/3 legendary elf When young link enter battlefield choose 1. Deal 2 damage to target creature. Draw a card and discard. Search your library for a basic land card. When you equip Young Link with the master sword exile it, return it to the battlefield transformed. Adult link. When this creature enters the battlefield create a triforce token. (tap sac draw a card) if you control 9 you win the game. Master sword 4 give creature +1+1 for each equipment you control. Equip 2 . Tap unequip. Just my thoughts.
John Coffey: G 4/2, lifelink. Cujo: R 2/2, Toxic. Johnny Smith: W 1/1, ETB Scry 1. Mother Abigail: U 1/1 ETB Scry 2. Carrie White: RG ETB gain control of target artifact until LTB. Give blink to black with Raymond Andrew Joubert but it's probably darker than they want to go and kind of a deep cut. I'm going to spend all day at work trying not to get distracted by the possibilities so thanks for that.

Flash makes so much sense with him, and the new finisher lets him keep coming back and makes him much harder to kill, the opponent only has some tiny windows to deal with him.
Link is a really hard design, but I do have two thoughts: I'd start with giving the Hero of Time one "Partners with Navi, Chatty Companion", and I think equipment is a good route to take, maybe all Link cards could have a really specific creature type and the equipment designed to accompany them could have a discount to equip this creature type, or special effects with them.
Since it seems UB is here to stay, I do have a few ideas.
1) Garfield and Friends. Probably a Secret Lair, not a full set. However, if we're going to go with the Fortnightification of Magic, lets at least have a little fun with it and go for the joke.
2) Something Sanderson. It would be tough to do, with varying creature types, but I think some sort of broad Cosmere thing, like, maybe a set of Commander precons, would be cool. So many different worlds, with a variety of cool takes on spirits and magic systems to base mechanics on. Bonus points, since Sanderson is a Magic fan, wrote at least one of the stories, and has even been on Game Knights.
3) Futurama. Because, fun, and plenty of room for nerdy. This would probably be a Secret Lair or some sort of booster fun, not a full set.
4) Discworld, which would probably be the most likely to have enough for a LOTR style full set.
I'm currently working on a custom set of What We Do In the Shadows, but I'd LOVE to see TMNT get some Kamigawa treatment. And as much as I enjoy your WWE ideas, the ONLY Universe that deserves Finishing Moves is Mortal Kombat.
Id watch a dedicated episode to any of these to see more of your card designs, or even 3 more properties for UB sets
Webshooters, auto equip to Spiderman then pay a repeatable cost to tap down target creature. With some kind of counter system tied to it, say,comes into play with 10 fluid counters, which go onto the target and remove one on upkeep before they can untapped. Then pay a 1 for 1 mana to put more fluid counters on the shooters.
Also, would love wheel of time for a universe beyond set. Robert Jordan created such a colorful world that WotC wouldn't have much trouble building mechanics around it
My first thought on Link was bringing back the "level up" mechanic from Zendikar. Gives the sense of making the character stronger, similar to the game. I think that equipment from the game needs to stand on it's own - not just any random equipment giving him reach. Maybe have the final level up ability be that he can equip any two pieces of gear that you own for like 1 mana.
Also, yes, wrestling! I've been waiting for the wrasslin' stuff. Hopefully Hogan doesn't politic his way in and become a 4 cost 20/20 with trample, indestructible, and haste.
I would so be seated for one set in the Dresden Files universe! So so many great characters, locations snd equipments to choose from!
I was working at a comic shop when the marvel dark tower comics started coming out, so many people who would have never set foot in there other wise were in there.
The 3 from the top of the library to represent a 3 count was so spot on for flavour 😂

These are great! I've been working on my own "Universes Beyond"-style project, but here's the fun thing. I've been working on it since Rivals of Ixalan. Some of you might recognize late 2017/early 2018 as being TWO FULL YEARS before Secret Lairs existed and three years before Universes Beyond's existence was even ANNOUNCED.
I've been having more fun with the possibilities my four-draft-set maxi-block (complete with preconstructed Commander Decks and a casual/prerelease side-event format I was GOING to call "Secret Lair"), than actually having a finalized product to show off. But with an ACTUAL comic-book-themed UB on the horizon, I've been busy buttoning up my designs before UB-Marvel comes out and makes my Sidekick, Great Responsibility, and Secret Identity mechanics look like rip-offs worse than Outlaws of Thunder Junction's "outlaws" has already done to my own "villain" batching (Assassins, Mercenaries, Minions, Rogues and Masterminds) or my pilfer mechanic (which only steals the top card of a library where OTJ-Alchemy uses the keyword action "heist" and lets you choose three).
In fact, over the last six years, many of my fresh, new, never-seen-before ideas have incidentally become Magic canon out from under me, including, but not limited to: an increased and well-supported reliance on common artifact tokens, the introduction of a mostly black-aligned spellcaster creature type called Warlock (or Witch -- I hadn't decided before Throne of Eldraine spoilers hit), doing a set focused entirely on criminality (to establish an excuse for the superheroes to exist) complete with multiple "crime families", bringing back the Mercenary creature type, and completing a multi-set thematic buildup to a massive crossover event War of the Spark style.
But I'm not bitter. I still have a few tricks up my sleeve that Wizards hasn't psychically poached from me yet. Heck the original idea was just a handful of cards -- five DC, five Marvel -- but at the time there wasn't a form factor to fit just a few cards. If Secret Lairs had existed in 2017, I probably would have considered my creations an alternate universe version of that. But NO! I had to build an entire expansion set around comic book characters -- no, two sets. Wait. Everything I came up with won't fit in just two sets. Better make it four! Yes, that's over FIFTEEN HUNDRED new card designs (including the Commander pre-cons) since the lore of the project prohibits me from using reprints (painted myself into a corner there).
Anyway, as you might be able to tell by the length of this comment, I tend to get carried away when it comes to Magic. (This is actually the shortened version.) I guess the only way to end this is to say thanks for reading this whole thing and let me know you did by liking the post. Helps me knw that SOMEONE read my silly words, and I could use the ego boost. I haven't posted my sets to planesculptor dot net (not a sponsor) yet, but some day I'll get to see what people think of my Four-Color Adventures.

I'd like to see Ghostbusters, i think that could be fun. I need a Peter Venkman commander lol. An Egon Spengler card that creates and collects "Spores, Molds and Fungus" tokens. Proton Pack's & Ghost Traps as equipments. Could have double sided transforming Dana Bearett/Zuul, Louis Tully/Vinz Clortho, and Gozer/Stay Puft Marshmallow Man cards.
Also now that they've had Fallout, they could do The Elder Scrolls as well. Would love to see a Sheogorath card lol.

Each of the Nintendo IPs could probably have dedicated sets unto themselves individually. Both as a means to fully explore some of the thematic motifs, and a way to drain more money from pockets. Wouldnt blame them for it either. Id love to explore a set from Metroid, Zelda, Mario extended universe (Geno needs some love), and various other old Nintendo franchises. Personally id love it if there were a Xexyz secret lair, but i doubt its even been a memory to anyone at Nintendo
Even though we have been on Arcavios recently with Strixhaven, Harry Potter could be a viable universes beyond imo. To diversify wrt Strixhaven, the 5 factions (the 4 houses + Death Eaters) could be associated to the allied color pairs (as opposed to Strixhaven's opposite color pairs). So we could have Gryffindor (GR), Hufflepuff (WG), Ravenclaw (UW), Slytherin (UB) and Death Eaters (RB). Also, Wizards could be made distinct wrt muggles by giving the first ones a mechanic (e.g. prowess or something novel). Food for thought!
Flying Elbow Drop could be dangerous with Infect, as that doesn't require combat damage. E.g. you cast Tainted Strike on a large creature and then Flying Elbow.
I would love a Black Company universes beyond set. The wizard kings would be some of the coolest cards for sure.
For marvel, whenever it makes sense to the character, I think equipment tied to them should auto equip to them on play. So Tony Stark would be his own card and his armors go on him immediately when played.
Mario: if he were to take damage, instead remove a counter, if you cant destroy mario instead.
I would please it as:
Damage dealt to Mario is dealt as though its source has Deathtouch.
If damage would be dealt to Mario while it has one or more counters on it, you may remove a counter. If you do, prevent that damage.
Are you could do remove a +1/+1 counter from Mario, he gains indestructible till end of turn, kinda like how when you take a hit damage with a mushroom Mario shrinks and flash’s and is invincible for a few frames.

Dark Tower would be plausible when and if the Flannigan streaming series actually gets made, and if it is actually good/popular! Oy the bumbler! Blaine the mono! Most King stories are connected to DT, so we could get stuff like Pennywise, Derry lands, and a Captian Trips Superflu board wipe!

Killer vid. Funnily enough my go to thought for a link card would be his smash moveset. Or a level up style card that can go from young to adult and maybe a way to go back again. Link is kind of known for having different versions and if I had to pick only one card for him I would be about him having different ages with different abilities.

I would like a Saga called "From Undesirable To Undeniable" it gives your dude to your opponent but then you get dude back with like buffs and stuff.
The world of sports, in general, is rife with opportunities. Imagine Tom Brady, Michael Jordan, Venus and Serena Williams, Pelé, Dale Earnhardt/Jr. as cards. So many possibilities

I'd love more Stephen King cards. Each member of the losers club could get their own card and their could be an "oath" type enchantment with all of them together. Also would be very curious as to what a shawshank land could do!
We got the one I would really want in Doctor Who, however for Link, make him Temur to represent the three domains and the godesses farore din and naru. then give him indestructible if he has 3 or more equipment. Representing the triforce
I was going to say 'No way Nintendo would be game for this, they are too obsessed with being *safe*' but if I think about it WotC might be the only other company in the games space as hyper-fixated on being brand-friendly/P.C./safe etc...

Id image link to be similar to what you had except it was one of those weird cards that searched specific equipment cards and maybe there are two variations where there is one for the base equipment and then the cool ene game equipment etc. Very open card design but I'd love to see the equipment(s) have transform abilites like the shield has "gives creature +0/+3 and reach" and " whenever this creature takes combat damage transform it into [master shield or whatever" 5hen maybe the transform side gives +0/+5 hexproof and reach and whenever the equip creature dies transform it back to [ordon shield]. I think link itself could be a deck (im thinking of commander personally cause most universes sets become a "commander set" or whatever). I dont think it would happen but building around legendary link in mono green would be so much fun

I'd flip for a Resident Evil UB set. They could probably do several sets, actually. The only sticking point I could see is wotc's "no guns" policy.
Elder Scrolls would go so hard. Humans, elves, dragons, vampires, werewolves, and cat support? That is literally everything people like. They could do level up Dragon shout auras too, like a Fus Ro Dah aura that bounces a creature when attacking, levels up to top of library, bottom of library.
Link's design was cool. He does in fact collect tons of gear throughout every adventure.

I'll take the Link suggestion a step further and say that a Universes Beyond: the Legend of Zelda set would be incredible. Fits perfectly into Magic like Lord of the Rings did, creature and tribal archetypes pre-built. The set would be artifact heavy and you could easily have different versions of Link (and Zelda and Ganon) depending on the game iteration. I for one would pay stupid money if WotC ever managed to do this crossover with Nintendo.
I imagine the dark tower itself would be a reflavored Phyrexian Tower. And with the new way that they are letting cards make tokens of real cards...just have Roland make a token of that.
Mine would probably be a full set for AoS (not just sld reskins), Zelda and Nier
only want a SLD with Jem & the Holograms (They could easily do it as Hasbro....) I really dislike using UB cards, I hate how the look in my decks, and avoid them as a whole. It would be good to only have one UB a year, but WotC will do as they like...

im thinking the mario card should get a shield counter, and has the abilities (maybe a start of combat choice thing) to gain an ability listed, but only while he has a shield counter. at least, i think the flavour win of gaining the abilities until he takes damage is neat. wrestling would be pretty sweet, i agree.... link with green equipment would certainly be a fun take as well. what would i like to see? probably g.i. joe? more transformers? other fighting games maybe? like king of fighters, soul calibur, or mortal kombat? maybe even a fighting game set with a few iconic characters from many fighting games. might be fun.

Mario should definitely generate gold tokens, but I guess treasure tokens are basically the same thing.
I am still anti UB and Secret Lair, but I admit, some OG DragonLance cards would make me waver. The character types and classes would fit so well!! And I could put them in my Tiamat deck, who we know is also Takhisis.
I think and will probably always think we absolutely need a UB set for the Souls universe
Hmm How about a Smash Brothers SL? That way we can get Mario and other stuff like even Castlevania, Samus, Solid Snake etc... You can also print Equipment and Lands(Arenas) in that SL.
LOL I really would love to see a Futurama SL just so Slicer could be printed as Roberto with flavor text: Ha-HAW. I think it would help alleviate the vibe as Slicer goes around the table as players say Ha-HAW in combat phase.

I believe Pirates of the Carrabians has enough characters for a Secret Lair at least. But really would love to see the Dune Universe as a set. If that is too sci-fi, let's go Elder Scrolls.
Elder Scrolls would also be a good IP to translate into MTG, whether it be Skyrim or Elder Scrolls Online. ESO would be cool because you can make class cards like Nightblade and Templar.
I was secretly hoping Roland, the gunslinger, would be a card in OTJ before OTJ came out

Not a huge fan of any of these properties but think they are ALL great ideas for UB. I was recently thinking Stephen King’s works would make for a great bonus sheet for the upcoming 80s horror themed set. Have a feeling we may see some of these in the not too distant future.

I would spend money on MTG again if they did a Dark Tower cross-over...they could follow with expansions if the initial release is successful. Allowing for an annual expansion that they could likely keep going for years...

Looking no further than the t-shirt you’re wearing, I want a Power Rangers UB. Mechtitan Core is obviously a nod to Super Sentai so it could be reskinned into any Megazord. You could also meld 2 or even 4 cards into 1 huge creature.

I want a Bret Hart that is basically just a Stasis on a creature... and it almost always forces your opponent to tap out.
The UB I would like to see: Touhou, Shin megami Tenseï, Persona
I think UBs should be smaller products, like AC or Dr. Who.
I also think UB should do smaller IPs that not *everyone* knows. That'd make it more interesting, imo.
