  • Its been months since we had new content of 86 Eighty Six. Now at long last a new episode aired this and its one of the best episodes of the entire story. The Author of the Light Novel even broke down and started to cry because of the beauty poured into this anime. Its not everyday you see a labor of love like this on full display. Can't wait for the next episode aka Episode 23 of Eighty Six

Yeah, the only circumstance in which the author gets emotional because of the anime apart from this is Demon Slayer. Both 86 and Demon Slayer manage to touch the author's heart, and the adaptations are great indeed. It's quality that no studios has reached to besides Ufotable and A-1 Picture.
I hope Mushoku Tensei can do that in the near future too because it's also a labor of love from the staff that I know now.

Also, on the parts of killing off characters, I always like to say: Just because you have "the balls" to kill off your characters, doesn't mean you should". And yeah i agree that it can be good, this show imo does it really well too, but at some point you have to wonder "huh, why should I even care about any of the characters if they're all dying anyway" like in Akame Ga Kill.
And there's also the beauty in NOT killing off characters for a LONG time so that IF you do, it matters all the more and hits all the more harder. Best example for that I can think of is probably Gintama cuz man there's only a few "major" deaths in there but if ever those don't hit like a brick I don't know what does.

I had to watch the episode multiple times, and I still fell the need to watch it again because I'm feeling like there are beautiful details that I didn't fully grasp yet. Lyrical but measured direction, fantastic use of timing and the OST, and as others here were pointing out, a concertated use of many little photography and composition details to convey the overall feelings
Especially loved the gradual erasure of the "black bars of isolation" - the aspect ratio that also meant we were watching a "destined ending", that are LITERALLY trampled on by Lena, TWICE. If someone missed the detail: she actually is positioned over the whole picture and walks ON the black bars, overcoming them, bars that then turns white and then transparent, reopening Shin's perspectives and his story.
Positioning a character over the frame is trick I've seen employed (for other reasons) in renaissance and early baroque paintings; I don't know if the photography director shares the same "image", but to me being that daring also meant being remembered of that.
Also loved how Shin was unshamefully and openly crying, of relief. We are in a different league of countless action flicks where the guys are just tough, or just learned to be tough, or have no other option to be tough. This is not just entertainment, characters are depicted as people.

This episode and the next were SOOOO rewarding because of the way it was set up:
    1. San Magnolia fell
    2. We don't know if Lena survived coz she was leading the fight!
    3. Shin was on a downward spiral into depression, he was going out to fight with psyche because he wanted to die!
    4. His teammates were torn away from him one by one, and we were left with the feeling they were dead because let me face it, the trend of deaths became a pretty usual thing in every fight that yhey went on upto that point.
    5. Shin was blown away from that Morph so i thought he was a goner.
I honestly agree with you, that is was satisfying...even if the anime doesn't continue after that, i would personally be ok.✨️

    1. I still need to know who 'No face'is
    2. There are still Legion to be fought and San Magnolia needs rebuilding

6:45 i didn't realize it while watching, but that reason is exactly why Shin trembled when he attempted to show his face the Major when they met in the flower field, he is afraid of showing up and disappointing her, as being the only survivor that she managed to catch up to, in a broken machine and bloodied, surely a sight that'd just worry her to no end. but after realizing his whole squad survived, he decided to be selfish and not meet her then and there, instead choosing to meet her later when they are not in a battlefield, together with the whole squad. that's his first "Desire".

Honestly, I was quite sad to wait for 2 months for last 2 episodes of 86. But seeing the reunion between shin and major was worth it. EVERYTHING in that dialog was great, the visuals, music, and ect. But what I think was the best is Shins emotions when he found out that the girl in front of him was major. Even without words you can clearly understand all spector of emotions that he feels and literally observed how life is returning to him with every word that major says to him. Truly beautiful
