330x240x240mm Arduino 3D printer WITHOUT using NEMA 17 stepper motors - Part 0 project introduction

  • Guess what? We're building a 3D printer!!! I know there are already way too many 3D printer videos on CZcams, but this is going to be a rather special one! In fact, I'm on a budget of only $50, so I'm skipping the expensive NEMA 17 stepper motors everyone else uses entirely, instead relying on unipolar stepper motors salvaged from e-waste like old laser printers, photocopyers and typewriters!
    This is going to be a rather unusual in-depth video series on the engineering and the design challenges of a super-cheap homemade wooden 3D printer with a print volume of 330x240x240 millimeters, in an attempt to get a little diversity into the 3D printing space.
    In this project introduction video I show you the concept I spent the last couple of months developping, and explain the background of my decision to suddenly build one, even though I personally don't like 3D printing.
    Here are some affiliate links to the parts I got for this printer:
    20pcs V-groove ball bearings: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_AgLaFh
    5pcs A4988 stepper motor drivers: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_Apv00b
    Cheapy hotend kit: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_A217Gn
    Arduino mega 2560: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_AnxG2B
    PLA filament: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_AYoQWP
    4010 turbine fan: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_AnUid9
    100k NTC temperature sensor for heated bed: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_A9cOwJ
    10m nylon coated fishing line: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_9HKabt
    Keep in mind I got a few of these items during sale, so the total might well be above $50 now (especially with inflation)

    You're not supposed to order the 3d printed parts, you're support to get them for free or for cost from people that already built their printers. Then when yours is done you can "print it forward" to create a new generation of 3d printers and printer owners. That's the idea of the open source reprap project that was the foundation of the 3d Printer revitalization that started around 15 years ago. Prusa i3 was a part of that.

    Hi love ur vid! Do you think I can just use 28BYJ-48 stepper motors for X Y & Z axes too? I'm not sure where to salvage old motors and I'm a student on very low budget. And there's something about backlash u said?

    • @ChronicMechatronic
      @ChronicMechatronic  Před rokem

      Hi! Yes you technically can use the 28BYJ-48, it has been done before (check out the cherry 3d printer project: czcams.com/video/mdrdldGIYgA/video.html which actually inspired my 3D printer to begin with!) though you will have to enable backlash compensation for it to work reasonably. However I strongly recommend looking for old printers, photocopiers, electronic typewriters, flatbed scanners etc to salvage better steppers from, cause many things you can buy at a low price will more or less be junk whereas components of a once expensive photocopier for example are a lot higher quality. The Canon 8800f scanner has an amazing albeit small stepper motor inside that I think would be perfectly suited for a small ender 3 style X-carriage. I know it can be hard to find E-waste depending on the country you live in, but maybe try asking at a local junkyard or recycling center, it's where I get stuff... Alternatively you could maybe post something on local social media for devices people are about to throw out. I say all this, because 3d printing is unfortunately a rather expensive pastime, even if you have a super low cost printer you'll pay a multiple of it's price for filament within no time. I bought 3 rolls of the cheapest PLA I could find and it already cost as much as the budget I set for the printer... So unless you recycle plastic waste into filament too, it will not be cheap no matter what - also, heatbeds gobble up a LOT of power. If you have to pay your electric bill yourself, the slower the printer due to crappy motors (like the ones I'm using) the more you'll pay down the road.
      I hope this isn't discouraging as it's not meant to be, but that's what I've learned so far from building this machine and I think you should know before launching into this. Entry level commercial printers are already about as minimalist and cheap as a 3d printer can be made using new parts without resorting to total junk, hence why I think our best bet is still e-waste... That being said I am trying to develop a 3D printer ecosystem with proper included plastic recycling for as cheap as humanly possible, but that'll take me years to come...

I'll really go into detail to hopefully be helpful to people who want to reuse e-waste instead of buying new stuff!

      @@ChronicMechatronic I also saved the linear rods from the printer because there like $8 a piece and got some bearings and used those for smooth movement. You probably could use those like the anet a8 uses.

    Hello, I have some information that can be of help.
    For the firmware, I think the EasyThreed mini 3d printers use your kind of stepper motor. So you use their firmware as a base for yours as it runs on a modified arduino mega board.
    You can do more digging on the EasyThreeD 3D printers, It can be of help as you make yours because of their type of stepper motor.

    • @ChronicMechatronic
      @ChronicMechatronic  Před rokem +1

      All the stepper motors I plan on using are unipolar, but yes, I'm going to wire them in the bipolar configuration to use the microstepping drives. Except for the 28BYJ-48 extruder, for that one I'm developing my own true unipolar drive circuit :)

      Iam actually planning to use 2 motors per axis..Will that be good?

    • @ChronicMechatronic
      @ChronicMechatronic  Před rokem +1

      @@mustafizsiam1506 sure, you can theoretically use as many motors per axis as you want, you just need to connect them all in parallel to the same stepper motor driver, or if they're bigger steppers that need a separate driver each, just connect all the motor drivers of the same axis to the one arduino output for that axis. If you connect multiple motors to one single driver they must be mechanically linked so as not to be unequally loaded. Otherwise microstepping won't work...

      Yeah, was about high time someone did it slightly differently... Though there's really no point in having a cheap 3D printer without also recycling plastic waste into filament to avoid having insanely high operating costs due to filament being stupid expensive.
