HOW TO Easily Remove Scratches From Glass And Mirrors Using 4 Simple Methods

  • Today, we show you how to remove scratches from glass and mirrors using 4 different and simple techniques.
    ► DISCLAIMER
Always make sure you operate in a safe and secure manner.
Glass can easily be scratched - also during the repair process - so proceed with caution (and at own risks) respecting the following best practices / instructions.
    ► INSTRUCTIONS
    * Clean and dry the complete area around the scratch with a CLEAN soft cloth (no rough fabric, no paper towel)
    * Take a second CLEAN soft cloth (I like microfiber cloth for this). CLEAN is important, since any dirt on the cloth can scratch the glass!
    * Where possible, lay your glass on a flat non-slip, non-scratching surface. I’m using here a rubber mat.
    * Dab a bit of product (not too much since too much product may cause more scratches)
    * Don't apply too much pressure
    * Rub in small circular motion
    * Stop regularly to check progress
    * Wipe off / rinse to check the results
The products we will be using have abrasive properties and will help polishing the glass to a flat state, removing the scratch.
CAUTION: Overdo it and you may create more scratches (especially when working with metal polish or steel wool)
    ► YOU WILL NEED
The products used in the video are:
    1) White Toothpaste: It has to be white (non-gel) toothpaste. If it contains baking soda, this is a plus. Apply using above recommendations.
    2) (Homemade) scratch remover: Mix 2 equal parts of baking soda and water. Apply using above recommendations.
    3) Metal cleaner / polish / car polish: Polish that work quickest has cerium oxide in the ingredients. Apply just a bit as rubbing too much at a time may create extra scratches. Work according to above recommendations.
    4) #0000 steel wool: Also works for mirrors. Make sure the #0000 steel wool is in perfect condition (no rust, no imperfections or you could be creating once again more scratches). Work according to above recommendations.
► HELP! The scratch is still present after using the 4 methods...
Next step is really to look at commercial / professional polishing / buffing products. Those are:
    - Jeweller's Rouge
    - Cerium Oxide glass repair kit
Note that over-polishing can create weakness in the glass and sometimes the best solution may simply be replacement of the damaged part.

Make sure to watch the disclaimer and only try this if you're fine with the risk of making the damage worse. I repair scratched glass for a living and see failed DIY attempts that end up requiring a professional to come fix. Be careful!

Having had some experience polishing some glass I will say that most of the 'scratches' that people want to remove can't be. Especially if it's deep enough to catch your fingernail on. You're not going to 'polish' away that much glass. In most cases what you're able to do is 'obscure' the scratch by smoothing out or polishing the rough peaks in the 'channel' or valley of the scratch so it won't refract the light. I use jewelers rouge sometimes and it also depends how hard or soft the glass is. Unless you use a machine polisher, with these light abrasives by hand you'll be working on it a while, which is safe but tedious.

    • @TheLabOtomy
      @TheLabOtomy  Před rokem

Indeed, glass is really hard and you polish it with something really gentle. Success will depend on depth of the scratch and dedication. Thanks for the feedback.

I just went in and tried the first solution, a bit of toothpaste on a microfiber towel, rubbed for about 20 seconds, and it was gone. I can't see it at all anymore. I am THRILLED. Thank you so much! Just for anyone's information, I used my nanohydroxyapatite toothpaste, originally developed by NASA, as I understand, and the first thing it does in your mouth is heal cracks. I know it's worked in my mouth to heal tiny fractures in my teeth, so I'm not surprised it worked on my mirror.

Hey I'm trying to clean old fish tank glass from a broken tank. It's been sitting a while. I took tooth paste and actually added baking soda and went with a actual buffer pad since I'm cleaning a few feet worth of semi deep scratches. I see you are able to get some similar depth scratches out with just a cloth. Are scratches easier to get out of certain types of glass? Like tempered VS non tempered? Low iron, or regular, etc? I'm having a heck of a time hah. Needed a break 45m with the buffer didn't make a dent... I'll try the steel wool method haven't tried that yet. Thanks for the tips and possibly direction on what I may be doing wrong or a more aggressive method if my scratches are deeper than I think. Not sure what constitutes a "deep" scratch.

    • @TheLabOtomy
      @TheLabOtomy  Před 2 lety +6

A deep scratch is one that catches the nail. The thing with glass is that all scratches can be removed, BUT the deeper scratch, the longer it takes (and yes sometimes, that will be hours... or minutes long with a rotating tools with pro-compound but the risk of cupping the material and weakening a spot). The glass is extremely hard and we have to rub it with something really really gentle... like sanding a wooden board with 4000 grit sandpaper... good luck!

I gave all 3 methods a shot on my glass watch face. Unfortunately, none of them worked probably cause it was a pretty deep scratch. The good thing is that none of the methods damaged the glass either. So I'm glad I gave them a shot.

Watch glass is of a higher hardness, closer to 7 on the mohs scale as opposed to 5.5 for soda lime glass..

I have tried the toothpaste method on a glass coffee table. Repeated the process 3 times hasn't removed the scratch completely but has definitely made it less noticeable to the eye, actually i can barely see it you have to examine the table up close to see the scratch may repeat this again and see if it disappears completely.

All right, here is a response. I scratched my car's side glass from inside. Baking soda removed %70 of it, the rest is almost unnoticeable. I spent a couple of minutes, rubbing very gently with a really thick and soft cloth in multiple layers.

If the scratch catches on your nail, this is bad news. Depending on the depth, this can easily be 30 minutes of polishing using professional cerium oxide based product and a powertool buffer... also too much polisihing will carve the glass and make it thinner (more prone to break...)
