ehx Superego Synth Engine Pedal Demo - Daniel Fisher

- Daniel Fisher, Sweetwater's Director of Product Optimization and synth guru, shows off the ehx Superego synth engine. This unique pedal, in typical ehx fashion, has to be heard to be understood, and Daniel puts it through a rigorous test. The Superego combines the infinite looping sound of the ehx Freeze pedal, with multiple layers of "Freeze", a glissando effect that lets you "slide" between frozen notesplus a glissando effect (from the ehx HOG), and an effects loop to warp the processed sound even further.
The Superego is using its Send/Return to feed an ehx Stereo Polychorus, and then everything goes through an ehx Stereo Memory Man with Hazarai, which Daniel demonstrates with dual Fender Super Champ X2 amplifiers. The keyboard is Korg's microSTATION.

Depends on what kind of sound you want to achieve, but one way would be to put either the Flashback or the Hall of Fame at the end of your pedal chain, then connect the stereo outputs to your two amplifiers. You could also use one amp for dry guitar and the other amp for delay, reverb, and pog. Put your pog before the delay and reverb - send the dry out of the pog to one amp, and send the effect output of the pog to the rest of your pedals and then to the other amplifier. Thanks for watching!
Very good bud - there are sooooo many poor quality demo's out there and this is still one of the best - this is a gem. Thank you. Leave it to Sweetwater (and Daniel) to do it right.
Thank you, 78tag. That video was so much fun to make. It's hard to believe that was a little over 10 years ago! -_Daniel_
That Guitar, P90 in the neck, HB in Bridge, gold truss rod cover and hardware. Wow!! Pedals are also awesome…
Have it, love it. I use auto mode 99% of the time and keep the effect volume at 33% and loop it through a TC Flashback delay. It's amazing.
6:17 water drop effect is exactly what this video needed.
the editing guy had some ...shrooms...
Totally agree
At 6.15
I guess it is kinda randomly asking but does anybody know of a good site to stream new tv shows online?
@Jase Misael Try Flixzone. You can find it on google =)
So glad you guys put the video effects in
I already own the pedal, but I was looking for more info on how to use it. I hadn’t thought of using the effect loop that way, thanks! I always find 1000 things to do with a pedal then I find out it does 100000 (or it was only supposed to do 10).
The superego is a good one. Even if you use it sparingly it works well to add subtle rainbow texture. As fun as it is, it doesn’t have to sound like you’re having lunch with Carlos Castaneda.
Hey, guys, if you like eh stuff as much as me, you GOTTA try there tube eq!! AMAZING! Can't believe more folks aren't aware of it's potential, makes ANY amp sound better, beefier, punchier, more defined, try it through your effects loop, or straight through with a analogue ds pedal for instance, you'll REALLY here the difference! Also, great for bass and recording, really warms things up.
This pedal is different, unique and definitely worth utilising with a synthesiser. Thanks for the overview 🤖
Thank you sweetwater for knocking this demo out of the park! How did you manage to do the demo we all wanted to see with this thing? Awesome show of some of its features
Brilliant pedal and superbly presented by Daniel
This guy...is the king :D I love his demos
Best demo I've seen on this pedal. 🎉
Thanks, Jen-Lea! Check out the Super Ego + video:

was hoping it would be cool but... that is insane. sold.
Super Champ X2s are underrated. Great if you already have a normal tube amp, add an X2 for a Wet/Dry rig. Add the Superego for a super wet/dry rig!
Great job of demoing this pedal! It sounds really amazing.
thank you so much for this wonderful demo! it was SO helpful and very thorough. very grateful for the pedal combination ideas at the end. I'll be sure to be getting one once the funds arrive!
I dont own one yet unfortunately, but I have played around with one and it is simply an amazing tone tool. There are literally limitless tonal avenues to explore with the Superego. A must have for those who want to push the boundaries. Great demo considering it barely sratches the surface of what this sweet baby does. Thank you!
Good ears! I hadn't realized I had done that until you pointed it out. My first two cassettes as a kid were Yes Tormato and Led Zepplin III, so that riff has been in my head for many decades.
That is the most beautiful looking guitar I've ever seen.
I was just going to restrain myself from commenting that it's the ugliest Les Paul I've ever seen, but you inspired me to lose the restraint. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Nice video, thanks man. I appreciated seeing how it well it suited the keyboard.
I'm still working on using it with the EHX "keys" series of pedals. So many effects - so little time.
these ehx guys rock.. nice pedals
EHX makes some pretty cool pedals. I know I've heard that short lick before at 2:57. It's just a series of notes. That's part of Chris Squire's bass line from Yes' "On the Silent Wings of Freedom."
.
Awesome, good job, sir!
.
Excellent demo. I neeeeeed that pedal
great demo, way above average... so far that average reviews are mere tiny specks the size of little grains of sand from the intergalactic altitude of this review!
Very cool pedal. I really want one!
"Super-Eno." Nice.
Wow so I can actually play chords using those pedals thats cool.Saved me getting another synth while I have 10 too many here!👽📡
Hi David. Here's another video using the SuperEgo Plus on guitar, synth, and bass:

Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_
great demo!!! thanks for proving that i need one of these.
Thanks Daniel, you killed this review! So great. just sold a pedal ;) P.S. sounds like you just wrote a SuperEno Score! nice one.
great review! im going to get one of those superegos now!!
wow I wanted some information on this and ended up being supremely entertained
Thanks so much SweetwaterSound
brilliant demo
Great review and demo. I have the Freeze pedal... and this SuperEgo is an amazing upgrade. You know I need one... now how many ways can I set it up? :0)
Thanks! This was a really clear and informative video.
Why have the chorus in the superego chain alone when the delay is in the entire chain? Why not have the chorus the same way?
excellent demo, thanks
I cannot get the sounds you get in this video. Perhaps I need to add that chorus pedal in the loop.
It just adds some subtle, ambient trailing textures. Think of it like adding reverb without adding reverb.
Great video. This pedal , awesome. I was wanting to know on the keyboard. Does it have to have anything special to help it hook up to the superego? And what type of cables to hook it up?
Great demo!
The gliss sounds more like crossfading than sliding?
absolutely great
Is this the same as a POG or other guitar synths? Is this actually a full on guitar synth or does it just do some of the stuff a synth does? Asking because I dont want to get different pedals that do the same thing..I want to get as few as possible that do very different things.. to save money and aggravation of course..
Great reviewer, fucking love that stereo amp setup. Now I want to change mine :/
Nice ripple dissolve man!
sweet video. the video effects were funny.
I'm a synth player who's new to Pedals. Trying to figure out the signal path for a Superego & a DD7. Send out of Ego, into DD7, back to Ego? Or straight to Mixer channel?
Hi Laura. You'd use your first example to have Delay on everything, and your second example to have Delay only on the Super Ego effect. Thanks for watching.
that is the awesomest thing ever
Hey SweetwaterSound How can I make a stero setup I have two fender twin reverbs a tc electronic flashback x4 delay a micro pog a Ernie ball vpk jr a tc hall of fame reverb and a fulltone fulldrive 2
Does the FX loop affect JUST the superego effect or the DRY signal being sent to the Superego? For example, if i have the ego after my drive section but have a pitch and a reverb pedal in the ego's loop, will my drives also be affected with the pitch and reverb or just the layer that the ego will add to my drive signal? Thanks!
Hi Joshua,
Check out 1:44 where I talk about how the FX Loop only affects the SuperEgo. Effects in the FX Loop will not affect the dry signal. Thanks for watching!
That's what I thought. I wanted to double check and make sure I understood well. Appreciate the response!
Is there a trick to do 0 dry signal if the pedal is in an effects loop? More of a mixer question I guess but I want to get that swelling from silence sound.
Hey there! Thanks for reaching out about the Superego. Setting the "Dry" knob to 0 will kill the dry signal, this will work whether the pedal is in an effects loop or not. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the question... give me a ring, I'd love to help out!
Cheers,

@@sweetwater Thanks for the reply. I'm using synths through a boss bx8 mixer effects send and yes the effects return is 0 dry signal(when dry knob at zero) but my mixer is still outputting the dry signal. It may just be the way this mixer is set up but I can't find a way to send a channel to effects send wirhout having that channels fader up which of course adds the dry signal to the overall mix. UPDATE figured it out, my mixer sends are post fader so I will have to direct route into superego to get that effect until I can afford a more flexible mixer.
SuperEno, lulzzzz
I need IT!!!!!!!!!!!
Imagine those pedals hooked up to a MicroKorg or Roland GAIA or Alesis micron se
I know I might be 2 years late, but is that a Gibson Les Paul BFG he's playing there?
yep.. ;)
i was just thinking "is that silent wings of freedom he's palying?"
Thanks for the demonstration. To my ears the gliss sounds a little Erie, perhaps to much for church. is there a way to take out some of the spooky sound?
Hi darrelbigdaddywhite, no way around it, the Super Ego's slow glissando is an eerie sounding effect. But the GLISS time is adjustable all the way to zero, so you can use it more as a freeze pedal, which won't sound as eerie, even in the middle of Lake Erie ;-) Thanks for watching!
Ha! Got ya. Thanks
great demo, at the start i though the guy was a dwarf though
NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIce.................
When you bypass the Superego, do you have access to the effects in the SE loop?
Nope, bypassing the Superego also bypasses the FX loop. Thanks for watching!
Thanks! Always appreciate Sweetwater's support and how y'all are so seamlessly embedded in the community.
95% of players out here do not have all 3 of these pedals. So, while it is very cool to hear stacked pedals, you should be showing these pedals on their own. Awesome, but....
Dude this isnt stacking. Except for the delay. Just toss any chorus or modulation effect in the loop and then use the delay after the output. Any delay should be fine.
Maybe the pedal wasn't designed to be used on it's own? Riddle me that
Whoa
which basically means echo
Sound nice but to space for me don't think I would want one would not sound right on 50 s 60 s rock even old county but it's worth the watched thanks. I'm like patles
Do you really think a comment about how you can't use it is appropriate?
what kind of korg is that? thanks!
started to sound like the transport on Star Trek TOS
I think the double click sounded best.
That synth sounds like the aliens have landed.
"SuperEno"................
Hmmm.......interesting.....
Lego my Ego 🧇 🧇 🧈
Earcandy.
This demo is like a big budget movie that goes NOWHERE. That's the problem with people in upper management, they know how the thing works, but they can't show you how it works. In other words, this device needs a real guitar player who can make the device work while playing actual music.
I think this pedal was designed for someone with their own imagination.
Meh...
