    I originally went into oils w no research whatsoever, just bought a set that claimed to have everything you need and went for it and now it’s my fav medium! The wait times though, I don’t have the patience… I usually only wait 24 ish hours between layers, so not actually dry but dry enough that it’s not too muddy

    Something that helped me with oils is to start with the dark shades first and go lighter in process, I find that it helps blending them together

    Mmmmm oil paint. I love how enamel-y and expensive and epic oil paintings look when they're done. I learned by watching some Happy D Artist and Lena Danya videos, then diving in and finding my own hybrid way. Great job on this one, I love the light on her face!

    Do grid sketches in charcoal or watercolor pencil. Graphite can float to the top of oils, even over time.

    zorn used the zorn palette but he also added other colours if he felt like he needed to. I think in his case it was also to keep the costs lower. yellow ochre probably cheaper than more punchy yellows.
    I feel like the zorn palette is limited when it comes to mixing bright, saturated greens also some oranges...though Vermilion is pretty orange ( man, vermillion such a pretty colours... I mainly love to use it because it just so nice to look at on it's own). I tried using a a very dark prussian blue as ablack substitute too and that was also pretty nice...I like saturated colours.
    my mum is an oil painter and so the smell of turpentine substitute and oil colours smells so much like home I don't even care much about it being unhealthy. haha

    Thank you so much for making this video! I really wanted to start to dip my toes into trying oil paints, and my experience is about the same as yours was. I’ve made a few paintings in high school and they were awful. I love the idea of just re-creating a painting and only using four colors, especially with it being something I’ve never tried before in this way. Most of the way I taught myself how to use watercolors was just trial and error and not really listening to anyone when it came to how I created pieces, like I love adding layers of colored pencil with my layers of watercolor and that’s not really the way some people approach watercolor pieces. I think your approach makes sense if it works for you! 💕

      Oils definitely seem intimidating!!! Especially if you don’t have the supplies on hand already- why but expensive materials for something you might hate??? But if you have the opportunity to try them you totally should, you never know what might end up being your go-to!!

    The problem you found with mixing lighter reds and it only turning pink might come from switching the cad red for alizarin. Alizarin is a more pinkish red than cad, and also you can use cad red light for a lighter red which might also help with mixing a brighter orange! But you're probably right about the emerald in the ring! That looks like he introduced some other speck of paint to it!
    This get me excited to paint more! Love this and hope to see more of these type of paintings❤️

    For anyone who’s sick of dipping their brush into the solvent again and again to wash it, you can just use paper towel to clean your brush instead of using solvent. It really boggled my mind when I came to know that xD

  • @karnidina

    It's looking pretty great. I think what you did was really good. My only "tip" and it's just what some people do. You can expand upon the zorn palette idea because it's limits are good. So instead of using those four colors you could try secondaries plus white or another limited palette. I used to just tell myself I was experimenting and it doesn't have to look good. (Just to get into painting with oils because I was a little put off them.)

    if you found limitations helpful in oil with the amount of information super overwhelming, i'd honestly recommend the same for digital art! i do way better art limiting myself to a simple program (ibispaint over, i don't know, photoshop or whatever people use) and a single decent round brush. with all the brushes and program tools available i would honestly just panic and not feel equipped at all. now i feel much better lmao

  • @jessyrobyn7910
    @jessyrobyn7910 Před 2 lety

    Just one thing. Oil is the opposite of acrylic, acrylic is light to dark and oil is darkest to lightest. Your shadows and contrast will have much more depth if you did it that way, and it’ll really make your life easier. Also glazing really makes colors pop on that last layer. I know you won’t take the advice. But DARKEST TO LIGHTEST, i swear it’ll make the painting process go so much smoother.
