Look at the date when this was done. At that time as far as instructing beginners this was helpful. Not many videos were available at that time. At least it was a paying gig for these players. Great to hear Steve's voice and see his stroke again. I grew up in Steve's 4 seasons pool hall and eventually became a hundred ball runner but let me tell you I saw Steve do things on the table that I could never ever do. RIP big guy !

Steve was a school teacher and who knew he be one of the best and I was lucky enough to meet him and Fats. It hurts to run out and miss the money ball, we all done it before but safety is just important as being able 2 run out

Well.. l have this on VHS & "Bar Table Billiards" where Steve's playin' this guy who doesn't ever let Steve play really. It was on a small table...hence the name "Bar Table Billiards". l've improved my game through watching both of these wonderful videos. Two quotes l remember often...
Steve :"Remember what l said before about alternative shots?" & Jimmy:"You got a problem come up?--you deal with it NOW." Oh yeah... also Steve:"Let's see what happens--" + "Those are the chances l LOVE to take--"

Boy has the game changed since this was released! Some of these tips are great, but several of them I would not do like that push out for the back cut bank on the 1 during the 9 ball section. The people at my local tournaments don't have much trouble on those.

I think he said "agate"; that is, the shooter in a game of marbles (usually "ringer", which is a rather pool like game at the high levels of play). The "good" shooters are made of agate, a quartz-like rock.
Clearly (upon a second listen anyway 😆) he's making references that are in line with his character, a sort of noir figure, as marbles was on the very tail end of popularity even in 1989.

I always liked Steve but in this video he's a bit stifled in his manner of speech. It's obvious he memorized at least most of this and then parroted back those words back. It doesn't have a natural feel. His intended audience are those who either have never picked up a pool cue or those who have almost no experience playing pool.

When a grown-man refers to itself as a "pretty boy," you know something is peculiar about this... person, like narcissism, perhaps? :) Anyhow, if you know anything about Mataya, you know the guy exaggerates just about everything that comes out of his mouth. I think every pool players in the world would agree with me there are no shots in pool that requires a 25 yrs of practice, or 25 months. A month perhaps. Only for someone who has never play pool. And, by the way, a masse shot is also called a curved shot. To utilize English to curve the cue ball. No big deal.
