Unknown Mortal Orchestra signed to Fat Possum Records for their self-titled debut LP out in late June. UMO was initially conceived by New Zealand native, Ruban Neilson, to release some tracks via bandcamp to promote his limited addition vinyl in 2010. He pieced a band together, with a skilled producer, Jake, on bass and a brilliant teenage drummer named Julien to fill out the band. They bring break-beats together with 60's/70's Beatles sounding pop harmonies and a minimal Krautrock rhythm section. They are based in Portland - Hudba
I would flip if I went to a random concert and heard the band do a cover of this.
When I saw them in 2018 they whipped this thing out for the first time in like 5 years because a fan had requested it to Ruban over insta the night before. I'd never heard it before and now im obsessed. UMO are amazing, and I'm glad they got me to go back and listen to some more Can
My band might have to learn this now
Oh fuck yeah 👍👍 I love this song ❤
morbidly obese cats
F yeah
Why the hate? They freakin' killed it.
From briefly scrolling through the comments, I can only see positive comments. 🙂
@@NOWthebandthey got a lot of dislikes i think
@@tioraidh-tux - Ah ok, I haven't seen that....
@@NOWtheband yeah, it's totally unwarranted.
This is a super interpretation of a terrific psychedelic--funk-Krautrock masterpiece by Can.
Makes me so happy to hear this cover and that UMO performed it. Listening to this one often.
This cover was fucking phenomenal! To say that it was anything less than phenomenal, is insane! Go back and listen to it again. Only this time listen to it through headphones, earbuds, or every speaker in your house, like I did. If you don't experience goosebumps several times throughout the song, you lose. You're doing it wrong!
@@dpclerks09 mm oatmeal
Listening for the 1st time now through a quality pear of headphones. I was looking for a live performance of the original by can. Halfway in. No goosebumps yet.
Very nice cover. One thing: what always fascinates me on the CAN original is the almost superhuman bassdrum triplets, maintained so perfectly thoughout the song. Thise are what makes that recording so special. Jaki Liebezeit was a unique virtuoso. Nevertheless, these guys prove that without them it’s still a great song.
You know it! Jaki was one of a kind. I watched a 1970 exposition Can gave on West German TV. Jaki set the tone for hours, all the audience members were stunned, and Damo freaked out all over the stage with his newfound shaman vibe, or whatever. Epic, confusing, baffling, revolutionary. Incredible.
I've seen a few live performances where those were one handed on the rack tom.
I say that the first drum machine was a human being after hearing Vitamin C, dude was on a different page than all of the other drummers of the time. 👌
FANTASTIC !!!
i just realized that Whitney is just the kid who played in unknown mortal orchestra, thats pretty chill,
Yuss, it took me 3 more years to notice this, but it's never too late to be stoked.
i was watching and thought "hold up a second". completely forgot he used to drum for umo.
Too bad Witney is the most overrated indie band of the century
@@musicalman1995 they're alright
That's what I call a 'Can do' attitude.
hehehehehe PUNS
not bad, your thumbnail pick suits that comment BTW
I fucking love this, a great band covering my favorite CAN song. 😱😱😱
Wow, it's a great live performance! great guys! hugs from Brazil and long life to Prog!
They are SHREDDING!
Great cover! They gave it their own spin while retaining the spirit of the original. To argue whether UMO is a better / worse band than Can is almost a moot point (Can being one of the greatest musical outifts ever, really) - this was a great version of a classic.
The dislikes are all from people who lost all their vitamin C.
yep, theyve lost it
They’ve got scurvy
yall listening to experimental music and then complaining when someone does something experimental but thats just my take
Casey Moore word
:D
What's more perfect than perfect? That's how perfectly Ruban Neilson's voice fits this song.
I was shocked at how similar his voice is to the original
Yeah, he did a good job.
@@dougthealligator You mean Damo Suzuki.
@@drsteele4749 I do
Excellent cover/interpretation of an excellent song
Not enough bass for some of you? Plug in your headphones!
Bass is a bit lacking but the guitar work is stunning - but still smartly subdued. I'm impressed!
Right about the bass.
I'm loving this UMO-ified version.
How dare they cover this classic of Kraut Rock band Can! Who do they think they are?? They should.....er....wait a minute......its utterly brilliant......fuck.......
That drummer is a showstopper
Very commendable effort indeed and good Damo impression!
Not every Cover of a song has to be a perfect imitation of the original. Different takes on the same song are much more interesting. But that's just my opinion.
Well said ; honestly this is more accurate to the studio version than any live can version
It's experimental, it's just worse than the original
Totalmente de acuerdo
I don’t want to hear an exact imitation of a song when it’s covered - I want to hear it turned into something different or completely destroyed. My problem with this cover version is that the drummer fails to capture the uniqueness and pulse of the original drumming by Jaki Liebezeit. The guitar player is good though.
One thing is a cover and another is a version: a cover does it exactly as the original, is a more or less successful copy; a version is the way you play a song, more or less different than the original. This one is a version but a pure gem itself. Well done boys!!!!
What a lame crowd, these guys absolutely killed this song, amazing performance!
I don't get the cynic comments on this cover. We are looking at a great live performance wich should be taken as it is. kudos to umo.
this crowd should have been going fucking crazy
Nah you dont understand, by standing in one spot and nodding your head to the beat and with the VERY OCCASIONAL shifting of your weight position on your feet (to the beat of course) shows you have a very deep understanding and connection that goes over the head of people like you who want to have FUN at a gig

Great stuff. Great version.

Fantastic Coverversion! :-)
Fantastic drumming.
This is great, not a copy, indeed a recreation
@Doogyrevko wow that’s the reason I said “recretion’”. This is a Can’s song.
Hey, is anyone able to identify the pedals he used here with his Mustang? They can be seen in 9:18 for example. Or do you guys know how to get such a cool noisy sustain out of a single coil?
Update: alright imo they are (left oto right): Electro-Harmonix Nano Small Stone, Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail Nano, Fulltone OF-2 Octafuzz and Boss TU-3 Chromatic Tuner.
Don't quote me on that tho.
This covers so good.
bravo
I’d like to hear black midi cover vitamin c. This is a good cover.
Super dope cover
Deadly!
🔥🔥🔥
This is amazingly good!
The intro y’all wrote to this amazing song Alone is fucking amazing! No one even knows this song exists.....y’all did DAMAGE!!!! I’d love to play/write with y’all
What’re you talking about? Anybody who’s into krautrock knows this song. It’s like the most popular Krautrock song ever.
Trying to cover any Can song takes great virtuosity and courage, a bit like trying to cover a Velvet Underground song. I must research and see of anyone has covered Hallelujah from Tago Mago? It's still my favourite ever Can track , and believe me there are many that I love.
Classy, draw you in, build you up drumming/beginning!
To even dare to do this is takes some balls.
Of course, the Jaki Liebezeit groove cannot be reproduced. There is no use trying to just sound exactly the same (that's also not the purpose of doing a cover, in my opinion). But, seriously, if you cover this song, this is a damn good way of doing it!!! Must have been very enjoyable for the audience!
Man this is such a cool cover. The audience doesn’t look too enthused sadly.
There's no accounting for some people's taste.
these guys made better than anyone here, Greetz from Brasil=)
Why so many dislikes, this is awesome
I am not familiar with UMO, they sound great here. This cover rules hard
Can someone please get Ruban a shorter guitar strap? The poor man can hardly reach.
Ladies and gentlemen, on drums, Greg out of Succession!!
きっとロシアのファッキンPもビタミンCが足らんのでウクライナを悲しませているんじゃろ。

My only complaint is the ads from YT killing the vibe. It's an awesome cover. The audio is crap so you can't hear all the stuff going on. Live would be amazing.
get ad blocker for youtube... its free too, I cant beleive Im still reading this comment in 2022 sometimes
Not enough bass.
Bass is ok but it needs more cowbell
And who the fuck are you whatsoever
Look I really like this performance, I think they did a really good job, but if they cranked up that bass it could’ve been so cool. The bass line in the song is dope and it kinda seems like it’s to the side here.
I bet most people in the audience don't even know Can.

All over the place with this, respect that they even tried to cover it, respect that they even know about CAN, and bet nobody in the audience know about CAN. But seeing CAN live and also playing this...............
I didn't realize Toby is a bass player.
Kylo Ren on drums everybody
Just like young.. music never old...

This is Frip doing Can
what the frip does frip mean?

Not good,sorry
I like how this band thinks their radiohead
+Sam Ramos What ;'-)
+Sam Ramos and they are adorable doing it :)
jasam123 they are actually kind of adorable.
People think in Radiohead when they listen motorik beat (CAN use this beat, also Kraftwerk and bands of nowadays like King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizzard )
Anyway, Radiohead uses it poorly lol
I like how you think this band thinks they're Radiohead
apart from the completely wrong drumming it was nice. bit too long
you must be very fun to go to live shows with. bring yer headphones to the next concert for mor pleasure.
@@dpclerks09 your comment makes no sense.
@@Tintop if you're looking for a note for note replication, listen to the album by Can. UMO improvs live, even on their own shit. Spontaneity is what makes live shows fun, they're a Rock band ffs. Plus, Jaki Leibezeit is a singular voice on the drums, and is pretty much irreplicable.
@@dpclerks09 Yeah I love all of these "experts" in the comments complaining about this or that... at least these people are actually out there playing music and performing instead of nitpicking online. Just enjoy the show.

I don't think so, they have soul, but if you don't like it it's ok

I love this but the way he says "vit-a-min" is so cringeyyyyy

oh dear.time to shelve that one ruban and move on...
Sounds like crap and an insult.
Some Can live videos sounded worse and they were true masters of this German crap sound…why some people talk much about technics but never show all of us the top genius and virtuous they are??? Is the same than sports …play and show, later we’ll talk and decide…
jesus this whole thing is a total mess its hard to listen to
Sorry lads but nope
AWFUL! Drumming sucked, was completely off. Way too drawn out.
