    I think Pearl white is the most beautiful glaze ever. Every time I see it I think it is so gorgeous. It looks pale blue but like an opal. Unfortunately Spectrum doesn't have a reseller in my country.

      Aw meeeeee tooooo!!! It’s one of my favs although it’s been crazing on my speckled buff so I need to figure that out!

    Thanks for sharing! That reactive red/firebrick combo on the black clay is stunning!!!

    Try putting a thumb tack in the bottom of your cups before you trim them. Push the tack into the clay until the head of the tack is flush with the bottom of your cup. Then while trimming the cup, when you encounter the tip of the thumb tack, it means your bottom is 1/4 inch thick. Don’t trim any further. When your cup is leatherhard-ish, you can remove the tack from inside the cup. Rub over the tiny hole that’s left and it will disappear. Works beautifully. ❀
    Edit
also
 practice tapping the sides and bottoms of your pots as you trim them. You will learn from the sound when you are getting too thin.

      @thehappyhomesteadnh  Pƙed 10 měsĂci

      Wow that’s brilliant!!! The thumbtack
would the thumbtack go through the bottom completely? If it’s too thin probably 😆 do you mean put the thumbtack on the outside on the bottom? Like the mug is upside down on the wheel for trimming. This is genius! Thank you so much!!!

    Going to give it a go with advice on the pitting/melt of the glaze. I don't think the kiln got hot enough. I'm dealing with the same issue and mine is definitely because of the heat work. Just had a kiln error. It's harder firing in winter! Also, some of the glazes you used might perform better at a hotter cone with a ten minute hold. Might be fun to try. It's all experimenting. 😀 Love the blues!

      Thank you! That’s so interesting because it has been sooooo cold. The basement is fairly warm though with the wood stove so đŸ€·đŸ»â€â™€ïž I will be ordering cones for the next firing. I do have the vent system so maybe that has something to do
      With it. Appreciate your advice so much!!! Yup it’s all one big experiment 😉😂

    • @hobblecreekpottery
      @hobblecreekpottery Pƙed rokem

      @The Happy Homestead NH I missed on the video what cone you're firing to. I'm having issues with my elements. It takes a few hours longer to fire than the Kiln says it should, so that's a sign that the elements need to be replaced soon. So if yours is taking longer, that could be an issue too. Sooo many variables with what we do. Good luck, and I'm sorry for your loss. I have puppy pawprint ornaments in my Kiln too. My son lost his boxer last month to kidney failure, and we got his pawprint impressions before he passed. So sad, and yet they bring us such joy for the short time we are blessed to have them. ❀

      @@hobblecreekpottery thank you so much â™„ïžđŸ˜ he was a gem. We were so lucky to have him for those 10 years! So sorry to hear about the boxer - it’s never long enough! So my hubbs actually replaced all the elements and basically RE built my entire kiln a few years ago. The time it took was the same
around 9 hours. I do a cone 6 with a slow cool schedule which is supposed to be the cure for pinholes 😂. That’s really good info tho
I wouldn’t have thought of the time it took to fire etc. I had one glaze kiln mis fire due to old elements (that’s when my hubbs decided to RE build it) and it was aweful! The glazes were all messed up even after I RE fired them. Clay can be so abusive 😂😂😂😂😂

    • @hobblecreekpottery
      @hobblecreekpottery Pƙed rokem

      @The Happy Homestead NH I'm usually replacing my elements every 2 years, but then I teach and fire 2 to 3 times a week. Do you have witness cones to measure the "actual" heat inside the kiln? I've had pieces that look like yours with the pitting and thick ropes of glaze and fixed them by going hotter. Good luck and let us know if you try refiring. 😊

      Yes I love those 2 reds together! I would love to get them to stagger a bit - I’m going to play with that. I’ve always wondered about the Laguna B3..is it groggy? The color seems to be rich and gorgeous. I use SIO2 PRNI black stoneware - it’s delicious 😋 it’s also 50% grog!

the rest of the kiln seemed to fire to a 5-5.5! Because I started using cones 😂

  • @micheledickey4066
    @micheledickey4066 Pƙed rokem

    LOVE all of the creative tests!! That planter bowl is AMAAAAZING!! The tester on the black clay cup with the big chunk looks like maybe the glaze was too heavy and didn’t melt. But I do think all of the pieces you have that are only glazed at the top could be fired again. Of course use your cookies and make sure they are kiln washed well. That tray!!! What great job girl. Nice foot!! Oh honey Murph’s foot print is so precious. He was a big dog! Very fitting Notorious PiG. Haha. Absolutely adore that jar with lid. Perfect shape!! Just a hint for your peacock pieces!! My light flux is really watery so I put some on a plate and spread it out and let it sit for almost the entire day drying out while I glazed and stored it every time it got a bit of a dry mush film on it, had to do that a few times. When it thickened I put it in a squeeze bottle so I could use it on my peacock pieces!! You don’t have to go over it several times AND it doesn’t slide down your piece since it’s not runny! Hope that helps. THAT CARVED JAR!!!!! OMG I LOVE THAT!!!

    • @tnlpottery4294
      @tnlpottery4294 Pƙed rokem

      @@thehappyhomesteadnh I personally would not add more glaze. It should just help even them out. I would also do the hold like gobble creek said just because the winter weather can mess with the heat work. So the glaze has more time to cure.
