- College Football traditions are the fabric of the sport we all love, and on Late Kick Live Ep 245 Josh Pate responded to a viewer question asking about his 5 favorite College Football traditions. The pregame eagle flight at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn is always must-see if you're ever there for a game. The same can be said for classic pregame entrances like Enter Sandman at Virginia Tech. What about the dotting of the "i" at Ohio State during Script Ohio? Josh also discusses the planting of the spear at midfield by Chief Osceola at FSU and even the playing of Neck at LSU. All that plus the Whiteout at Penn State. What are your favorite traditions in College Football? I'm a Georgia fan, but Auburn's pregame eagle flight and Chief Osceola at FSU are both really impressive. I love watching stuff like that. Jump Around looks awesome too. I've never been to a game in Madison, but would love to go.
You missed one! The yearly tradition of “Texas is back”
you misspelled Tennessee LOL
Who’s in the playoff?
The Seminole Nation approves the Chief Osceola ceremony. They also have no issue with the Warchant. Go 'Noles!
In the 90s yes.....
Something I like about FSU is their partnership with the Seminole Tribe of Florida seems to be genuine and mutually beneficial. I'm a Georgia fan, but I love it. Isn't it true that members of that tribe receive free tuition at the university, and that a class in Seminole history is extremely popular at the university? I know they worked with the tribe to include approved designs on part of their uniforms.
In general, a lot of teams with Native "mascots" have cartoonish depictions and teams/schools make little to no effort to work with individual tribes or see what they find acceptable depictions , but FSU seems to handle things extremely well. Granted, I know there are members of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma who may have different views and I'm open to hearing their thoughts on the matter, but it certainly seems that the Seminole Tribe of Florida and FSU have both benefitted. From an outsider's perspective, it is refreshing to see what appears to be a school actually honoring Seminoles instead of mocking them like some schools do with indigenous groups.
Isnt Cheif Osceola a member of the Seminole Nation?
My understanding is there are three different tribes that represent Seminole governments and the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma is the largest one and they categorically oppose the use of mascots by all sports teams including FSU. So much so, that on October 26, 2013, in particular they passed a tribal resolution to categorically condemn the use of all American Indian sports team mascots largely in response to FSU's undefeated season. Its not so black and white as josh seems to imply and still rather controversial.
@@ImReverseGiraffe yes it’s always a member of seminole heritage or the tribe and a student at the university
It's a good list, and since you included Script Ohio it's legitimate. I think "Jump Around" at Wisconsin and the wave at the children's hospital at Iowa are deserving of honorable mentions.
Florida Gators 4th Quarter tradition in the Swamp from a Gainesville legend, Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down"
Josh needs to experience Jump Around in Madison, would definitely make the list
The swamp in the 90s was no joke just ask the whole southeast conference back then
I had a house a few hundred yards from Leo the Lion at the university of north Alabama. His daylight roar was incredible. Wow
@@cadbane7780 there's nothing I've ever experienced that touched on my primal fears quite like hearing a lion roar in person. It is an experience unlike anything else I've ever had
No longer do this but several former players from SEC schools that I know said it was so disturbing to run out of the tunnel in death valley and having Mike's cage right in front of you with him roaring.
As a Sooner fan I'm a little biased. Boomer and Sooner traveling across the field with the Sooner Schooner is awesome. The drum major of the pride of Oklahoma going down the field with their back bent is crazy. The carrying of the other Big XII schools flags by the color guard is cool. The ruf/neks and lil sis behind the goal post shooting off the guns when a touchdown, extra point or field goal is scored or when a quarter ends is pretty amazing. The OU chant and finger raise and lowered during kickoffs is amazing. Players jumping and hitting the OU banner when they come out just gets me excited for the game. The Boomer Sooner call back chant before and during the game is so much fun. Everything about our traditions is amazing. If you haven't been to an OU home game I highly recommend it.
Jump around in Wisconsin is the one I'm fond of
I don't remember Neck being played in the 80's when I was a student at LSU. The hostile environment at Tiger Stadium is unmatched.
Now Tiger Stadium and the Jungle in Auburn 2 most dangerous places to play when the sun goes down
Yeah "neck" is a common song play in HBCUs across the country. However even if it's a bit watered down the LSU fans definitely make it unique.
Does anyone else find it ironic Josh takes more offense to script Ohio than lsu's neck? Lol
It’s personal. Highly personal. - JP
@@LateKickwithJoshPate With all due respect, after seeing the tweet, you’ve got some awfully thin skin 😂
FSU's Chief Osceola & Renegade!
Western Kentucky should be on the list. Considering they created the most iconic tradition ever, the rally towel. Every team uses the rally towel, but it really means something to WKU, unlike the others. It is the Hilltoppers tradition and is so well loved there a cherished, that it is the Hilltoppers logo.
FSU Josh Pate

Hating The Most Exciting 25 Seconds In College Football
I’m assuming you’re talking about clemsons entrance since that is literally the only name y’all use for it and it is most definitely not what you think it is so many other teams have better traditions than rubbing a rock and running down a hill
You can't even hear the person who is sitting next to you!!! WE ARE 🏈 Unrivaled
Oceola at FSU, Masked Rider at Tech are easily my top 2, then the Raider Power chant. After that, I have to think, the eagle at Auburn, Raffie at CU maybe, to each his own, but Oceola and the Mask Rider stand out over the rest.
This is a great list!
toomers is my favorite, the jump around at Wisconsin is also cool
After winning the homecoming game, Bemidji State jumps in the lake, that is right next to the field, and sings the school song. It could be a rare hot day or early freezing cold in Minnesota
I always enjoy seeing the Vols run thru the T
Texas A&M mid night yell and band are awesome. Texas A&M has a very large stadium so all their traditions are magnified
LOL Neck! HBCU bands have played a version of CAMEO'S " Talkin out the side of Your Neck " from "She's Strange" album" since 1985. If you attended a HBCU football game you heard it. Asked the old heads about it when attending a Southern U game.
Lifelong Auburn fan here and I love our eagle flights. But in all honesty those fans waving to those kids in the hospital hits me like a ton of bricks every single time.
Pate telling us they’re is evidence of dragons is insane
The singing of Country Roads after a WVU win is always amazing!! Also you like the singing of LSU Neck then you’d love to hear 60,000 WVU fans chant ESP during Sweet Caroline
I love an entire stadium singing together, and nobody does it better than Tennessee (Rocky Top) and West Virginia (Country Roads). Goose bumps every time, and I’m not a fan of either one.
It’s too bad we haven’t been able to sing it often the past few years lol
@@tjsutphin9855 yeah well, we haven’t had much to sing about, either. Lol
Everything at Texas A&M is pretty awesome
Yeah its hard to nail down one thing about A&Ms game day. I think Kyle Field came alive this year and is only going to get hard for teams to play in.
@@JJ-zr6fu when I was in school during the years 89-94 we had the longest undefeated streak in the nation. Beating A&M at Kyle Field was impossible, hope we get back to that streak! 👍🏻
Dang right
No its not
@@JJ-zr6fu yeah app state had real trouble lol
Singing (screaming) "Mr. Brightside" in the 3rd quarter/"Blues Brothers" 3rd/4th quarter break. Michigan.
Cheif Osceola!!! Greatest tradition!
Can't believe Josh listed the LSU Neck chant as one of the top traditions😂 Geaux Tigers!
Terrible choice - ‘neck’ is NOT a tradition nor representative of LSU.
LSU’s Mike the Tiger (all 7oo pounds and 9’ of his regal self)’ just across street from Tiger Stadium is as REAL as War Eagle, Chief Osceola, Bevo, Ralphie & Army Cannon on scores - certainly ahead of ‘Sooner Schooner’, a ‘White Out’, or a ‘Hairless Nut’ ‘dotting an I’
Thanks for giving props to script OHIO, gotta say Wisconsin way up there!
The Vols running through the T while playing Rocky Top, the best fight song in all of sports history and the only fight song in all of sports history that gets away with mentioning killing government agents for looking for a moonshine still and gets away with it, should be on this list. Go Vols baby!!
None of it, compares to the White Out in Happy Valley, literally!!!!!!!! WE ARE 🏈 Unrivaled
Running through the "T"
Go Big Orange!
This! At the Ole Miss-Tennessee game when they did it with the lights... oh man. I get chills just thinking back on it. Could have powered the US with that pure electricity.
My favorite tradition is the 12th Man. I am an Aggie though.
I’m a Longhorn, but the 12th man is awesome. OK I said it. Peace
@@spearsba at least you admitted it. Looking forward to playing y’all again in a few years.
Probably the lamest and most stolen tradition in football.
War eagle is a awesome phrase
My Nittany Lions 🦁 running out of the tunnel where the mascot opens up the gates, is by far and away the best entrance in college football and loudest most insane experience!!!!!!! WE ARE 🏈 Unrivaled
Chief Osceola is the king of Florida And FSU is best youngest tradition
Running of the Baylor Line has gotta be up there!
Midnight Yell in Kyle field at Texas A&M
As an ole miss fan, neck is hard to beat.
The Iowa Wave, running through the T, and the 12th man should be honorable mentions!
“Neck” is not an LSU tradition, just started playing “neck” a couple of seasons ago which they got from Southern University whose up the street and been playing “neck” for years. Along with some other HBCU’s
Nobody cares
But they just say talking out the side of your neck like the song. Lsu has a foul hilarious hostile chant
It’s been at LSU since at least 2011. So I mean that’s over 10 years now lol. LSU just does it better🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Fleetwood♥️Mac, aye. giggles'n'grins
I get that you did the war eagle but I would have liked to seen the rolling of toomer’s on this list
Checkering NEYLAND BABY
I think I know what CYT means, and I find it extremely funny because I say it to my friends all the time.
I definitely think there are more deserving chants that could take the place of LSU's Neck chant but I understand this is an opinion. FSU's Chop or OU's Boomer Sooner are what I would replace it with. At least the neck chant is original and not just a popular song.
Can’t beat neck! If you’re lucky enough to hear it it’s wild. Geaux tigers
How about best uniforms or combinations of uniforms?
Miami Hurricanes going through the smoke 💨 Awesome!!!
Tunnel walk-Nebraska
Cowbell, enough said (Hail State)
My list would include a certain buffalo and Wagon
Give me my calling the Hogs. But FSU has one of the best ones though.
LSU fan, but live close or Cstat… midnight yell is undeniably one of the best traditions in cfb
That’s a cult out there in college station
How in the hell is the Iowa wave not in this literally the number one best
Geaux Tigers!!
Come experience the cowbell Josh
Well I'm Alabama all the way so it is against My creedo to like that eagle flying even though it's a very beautiful animal
Midnight yell at Texas am and Dixie land delight at Alabama
how does the most exciting 25 seconds in college football not make it
Auburn has the best traditions all around
🤔
@247Sports did you know script Ohio was first performed by the Michigan marching band in the 1930's? OSU's greatest tradition was a gift from their bitter rival
I love that my canes started the running out in the smoke tradition, but the "enter sandman" intro for VT is cool too.
I went to the Auburn/UT game in 2018, and the War Eagle was pretty impressive, but I came away thinking Tennessee had way more tradition than Auburn. Just my take.
In what way does Tenn have more tradition than Auburn
Maybe losing to bama tenn is better at 😂
But i promise you Auburns 90k gets twice as loud as Tenn 105k
I was at the 04 Auburn Tenn game in Neyland i was at the 04 Auburn UGA at JHS
I mean i get it we did take tenn out back amd beat them like a chomo
But Auburn is just way better
Dixieland Delight
You forgot Country Roads and the Iowa Wave
Navy Army March on!!!
I have to put my hometown team up here, it's the Sandstorm, for my University of South Carolina Gamecocks.
Sandstorm is just a little too new to be on a list we these from a lifelong fan and current student
@@Hydra_6544 I can agree with you.
Neck huh? ***Looks sarcastically in HBCU***
Southern University (also in Baton Rouge) as well as other HBCUs started playing ‘Neck’ well before LSU watered it down.
…ok…
STTDB
True Statement.. LSU fans are the casuals when it comes to neck.
@@bugg826 Facts!
There can't be a wrong answer in opinion listlsike this but I'll never understand why playing a song loud during the team's entrance is considered a better tradition than so many in college football.
War Eagle, Script Ohio, and Osceola/Renegade are all top 5 to me.
In my opinion yell practice at A&M would possibly be one, as well.
I sort of understand the White Out, but I don't understand why it would be a top 5 for people.
To each his own, though.
As I said, there can not be a wrong answer, though.
Josh don’t go to Africa to see the Lions they will eat you. If you do go. Take your side kick from the show with you. You know the one that’s always against Tennessee. And if they get to close toss your side kick a peace of beef jerky. It might get a little messy but you will make it through.
Well everyone copies the NOLE CHOP and some the Texas A&M 12th MAN. So those have to way up there
My question is did Auburn win the day the eagle hit the glass or didn’t return
Same question here lol
The eagle never left the stadium. It flew behind the jumbotron and came back to the field. The hitting the glass actually did happen. Didnt hurt the bird.
Terrible choice - ‘neck’ is NOT a tradition nor representative of LSU.
LSU’s Mike the Tiger (all 7oo pounds and 9’ of his regal self)’ just across street from Tiger Stadium is as REAL as War Eagle, Chief Osceola, Bevo, Ralphie & Army Cannon on scores - certainly ahead of ‘Sooner Schooner’, a ‘White Out’, or a ‘Hairless Nut’ ‘dotting an I’
Nothing beats sandstorm at Willy B
Josh as a member of a college marching band (TBDBITL) what are your favorite marching bands/band related memories? Also we here in the band and at Ohio state take doting the I very seriously so apologies on that front. It was almost obligatory that it was clarified because even in jest unless it was explicitly shot down our amazing social media coordinator would have probably taken some heat if he didn’t say something.
Gotta have the hog call in there
The 12th man
Navy vs army March in
Really? they can spell ohio. Very impressed
I would add Alabama and winning championships as a pretty cool tradition
Haha
Oh nice! More reasons to hate Ohio State! Thanks Josh!
Bama Tradition - winning the game.
LMAO & Roll Tide!
RTR
Josh has hit an all-time low with his endorsement of Neck. I bet he also enjoys watching Jackie Sherrill’s castration videos.
Josh downgraded a lot choosing neck to have a spot on this list
F. S. UUUUUU🍢🍢♥️💛
Josh , no rational person would ever include the LSU chant into a top anything. It's vulgar, nasty and an embarrassment. So in the year of our lord that's what we think is worth covering in a positive light? 😔😔
CYT
Those who get it, get it, those who don’t, don’t... the Battle Hymn of The Bulldog Nation is undefeated ! GO DAWGS!
Specifically the Battle Hymn Soloist. I can't imagine being the one to go up and play that role.
@@EvanDoesGood I’ve done a solo in front of a hundred or so people I can’t even imagine a thousand times more that that
The what?
Dixieland delight at Alabama >>> neck
yikes
Be honest, in the world we live in today how long is it going to be before the whiteout game is deemed racist?
I personally don't think there's anything racist about people wearing white shirts to a football game and waving white pom poms in the air.
But I know there are people that will be.
SHHHH, Don't give them ideas (we know who)
FR
shutup nobody will care about that it’s the primary color of the team so they want fans to wear it every elementary middle high school college does it “red out , black out , white out “ nobody cares u jus tryna be weird
@@yoc329 you underestimate liberals.
I doubt it. Teams do all sorts of things like that and I believe it's a stretch that they'll worry about something like that.
My top 5.
5. CU buffalo
4. TEXAS STEER
3. VT SANDMAN
2. FSU FLAIMING SPEAR AND THE HORSE
1. WAR DAMN EAGLE
Notre Dame has the best traditions all around
Sorry, but Auburn is disqualified. You only get one mascot, make up your mind people.
Alabama winning it all
Even though Texas has been down for the past 10ish years the Red River game is one of the best traditions in college football
Its play in a dumb stadium at 11 am that's not a good tradition.
