  • Getting started on the 1971 AT1 that I picked up from the AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days swap meet at Mid Ohio this year. First things first...trying to get it to run and find out what all it will need to do so.

    That model of Yamaha 125 was my second motorcycle and it was even in candy apple red. I bought it new when I was 15 years old. I would like to say that I am jealous, but I'm not. It sure was a fun bike. It was a big step up from my trial 70. Here's hoping the rings free up from running the engine.
    What a gooey mess coming out of the exhaust port. Definitely some seal damage on the clutch side. If I was that old, I would have a few tired rubber parts as well. Oh, I'm much older than that, no wonder I'm tired and achy.
    Another set of videos I can enjoy, thank you.

      That’s cool, glad I could remind you of your old bike! Yeah, I kinda figured the crank seals would need replaced. Luckily these Yamahas are pretty straightforward and don’t require you to split the case! Hopefully they cooperate coming out! Thanks for tuning in and sharing your story!

    Man that’s awesome my Papa had a white 1969 AT1 125 he bought brand new. Hes passed away but it’s still in his old shop with a blanket over it. Im hoping maybe i can acquire it someday! I always thought the electric start was pretty unique. Merry Christmas man

      That’s cool Josh, you really should get a hold of it, get it running and keep it forever. And Merry Christmas to you too!

    Wanted to comment on video with stuck barrel. I had same issue with 73 RT360. My mechanic said after trying to lift for a while put 2x4 on top of barrel and smack downward. Then lift again for a while then smack down again. Repeat for a while. The repetition breaks rusted connection between barrel and bottom end. Worked for me in 20 mins😮

    You have got it easy for a change with the electric start . did you go to swap meet looking for a specific bike or holy grail find

    • @Garage2Trail
      @Garage2Trail  Před 8 měsíci +2

      I just go looking for any projects that I think people would like to see come back to life. It also helps when the bike isn’t completely rusted out or missing a lot. I look for the ones that don’t run as well. Makes for more interesting videos.

    Hey, everyone! Anyone have any idea what a totally restored 1969 AT1 (white) is worth? These are cool bikes!

    I am suprised it ran with such low compression

    • @Garage2Trail
      @Garage2Trail  Před 8 měsíci

      I think my cheap compression tester reads on the low side, but it still didn’t have much! I’ve had the same thing happen with a couple other bikes I’ve resurrected in the past only to have the rings get “unstuck” after it runs for a bit.

    That white chainguard on top, is that factory or a state based requirement? Im in Australia and my dt 100 74 had something like that on it. It looks like it was off a bicycle and i think it was to meet one of our states registration regs. It won't be going back on as part of the restore :)

    • @Garage2Trail
      @Garage2Trail  Před 8 měsíci

      Pretty sure that is factory. Here in the US I think most states required a chain guard for inspection and they were shipped with them on. This one is is rough shape though!

    Do you have a preference for a one ringed piston or 2 ringed piston AT1? It will be used for putting around the neighborhood and displaying at bike shows. Thanks!

    • @Garage2Trail
      @Garage2Trail  Před 7 dny

      No preference..I just use whatever is OEM and never had any problems

    • @DH-mf2lv
      @DH-mf2lv Před 7 dny

      I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I have a chance to purchase a 1969 AT1 but I think it has a MX piston and ring. That means only one ring. That’s my reason for asking. I thoroughly and always enjoy your videos. Especially on the 2- stroke machines! Keep um coming!

      @@DH-mf2lv no problem at all! Thanks for watching! I actually JUST got a CT175 (‘73 model) that I’ll be starting on soon that had the MX cylinder and head put on it from one of its previous owners so I will be more acquainted with it very soon.

    Do you prefer the AT1MX over the AT1? If so, why? Thanks.

    • @Garage2Trail
      @Garage2Trail  Před 7 dny

      Hello, I don’t have any experience with the MX version unfortunately so I can’t give an opinion. I do know that AT1 was nice for just messing around on side streets and stuff.
