Beethoven's Ninth: The coda to an epic life in music

- Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was a composer of extraordinary gifts, but a lifetime of maladies - including the almost-total loss of his hearing - threatened his ability to write music. He would overcome thoughts of suicide to compose his masterwork: the Ninth Symphony and its optimistic final movement, "Ode to Joy." Correspondent Mo Rocca talks with biographer Jan Swafford and conductor Marin Alsop about Beethoven's incredible triumph over terrible mental and physical suffering; and with a hearing specialist who has created a simulation of how Beethoven actually heard his music.

A deaf composer writes the most joyful piece of music ever heard by human ears.
He would put his ear down on the piano and could feel the vibration
Forget all that modern auto-tuned music- this music from two centuries was where all the magic was, with Beethoven, Bach, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Haydn, Vivaldi, etc.
+ Händel in my opinion (as a choir singer) the second greatest after Beethoven
Thank you. After 62 years of listening to all kinds of music, I still feel that the Ninth Symphony is still the greatest piece of music ever written.
It's the only CD I own.
ABSOLUTELY BAR NONE
I think the same
The minds ear. What a provocative thought. The man couldn't physically hear what he composed but he he could hear in his mind. Just like we hear a song in our head even though it's not playing. I'd never thought about music that way before. In my own mind, music is a large part of my life and I can imagine still enjoying it even without hearing.
You and me both. I even visualize the sounds of the Moonlight Sonata from time to time, from Beethoven, himself.
Simply the greatest composer that has ever lived and will ever live for me.
There is a just a degree of difference from turning rage, sadness, longing, into passion, love and hope. The human problem is that we give up and stop trying to overcome challenges. Beethoven was determined to not let nobody and nothing preventing him from having his music communicate what his humanity could not. He transcended himself.
beautifully put
Beetthoven's music still resonates today because we are all yearning for a sense of peace.
Even in the darkest times is potential for joy. Need to hear that hourly just now. Great piece
How can you not get chills when hearing this played by a live orchestra. A Masterclass in Music 👏👏👏
or just thinking about it
I have seen this symphony performed twice in person, to include by maestra Marin Alsop’s Baltimore Symphony Orchestra & I get chills. It is the most powerful piece of music in the entire Western cannon of art.
My late husband wrote a line about "the music the deaf man hears". Then we met and he discovered how much I adore Beethoven's work, the 9th above all others. Every time I listen to the 9th now, those words run through my head. Inarguably, THE finest piece of music ever written!
My absolute favorite symphony of all time!
Just saw a Beethoven documentary last night, great to see him honored here!
I was lucky enough to be in the choir for a performance of this piece... singing a song about joy and unifying humanity shoulder to shoulder with fellow singers and a full symphony, I would choke up almost every time! So moving and powerful.
It may be apocryphal but I have heard that when they were developing the music CD 💿 they settled on a length (75 minutes or so) that would accommodate Beethoven's 9th on a single CD. 👍🙂
Yes!!
on an lp they had to cut out the repeats in the 2nd movement.....how many wasted minutes of Eugene Ormandy, Bernstein, so many others cut out because there wasn't room?
Herbert von Karajan (Berlin Philharmonic) was the first conductor to put a symphony on CD for Deutsche Gramophone.
Thank you Ludwig for existing....
What an amazing piece. It rea, really, bought me to tears of joy! Thank you!!!🙏
Excellent piece for national TV, something that has been almost completely lost in the modern era. I hope more of these are produced and that popular culture will once again be exposed to greatness such as the Ninth. Also fabulous is the inclusion of one of my favorite musicologists, Jan Swafford. Bravi to all involved.
The Ninth is the greatest symphony of all time and I would argue that his Violin Concerto, which is the only violin concerto he wrote, is the greatest violin concerto of all time.
Immortal Beloved... the film, see it.
Pure tenacity of a genius🤔
To fully appreciate this article watch the movie about his life, Immortal Beloved.
there is a documentary called "The Ninth" if you can find it, it is excellent
I have been in choirs that performed the 9th. Such a feeling of power came over me. And, having a working knowledge of German certainly helped. Ja, das hat mir gefallen.
Very interesting. Odd that this does not mention that the "Ode to Joy" movement is, in fact, the official anthem of the European Union. They could not have chosen a more fitting piece of music. Inspiring, moving, and thoroughly European.
My favorite symphony of all.
Unbelievable...this piece was written to encourage others during a time of revolution and to remind them of the joy to come.
Wow. So good…….
I didn’t expect to cry; but wow, what he accomplished was and still is awe-inspiring!! Look at God🙌🏾
Beautiful Amazing 👏
#9........my fave!!!♡
Part of the 9th’s legacy:
-Rise o Voices of Rhodesia
-Anthem of Europe
-Joyful, Joyful We Adore Ye
-Die Hard
I am playing Bethoveen on flute and uke and guitar and stuff.
Even when you’re doing a video about a deaf man, you still don’t have captions. I really think you should start doing them.
Most touching!!
A beautiful melody. I never knew there were lyrics.
Jan Swafford's biography of Beethoven is really good. I read it a couple of years ago.
Thank you 💕
The Pastoral Symphony is also a favorite especially when it's done to mythical creatures in Disney's Fantasia
Me like this so very much.
growing up, Snoopy and Schroeder among other people told us that the Maestro was born on December 16th. I accepted that. somewhere along the line my best friend told me that the Ninth is the single most perfect piece of music ever written, so i listened to it until i knew it very well, and then some, can never tire of it. right at the end, one note is struck 17 times, not really in keeping with the piece. 17. 17 times, one note. The Maestro is speaking from beyond the grave, and his birthday is December 17th. (smile)
I discovered Beethoven also as a young teen through Peanuts and Schroeder too.
Ironic master piece immortal beloved.
I have never before heard Marin Alsop expound on any subject other than herself. Since she has led the Baltimore Symphony for many years, this is my first time hearing her discuss something other than her own accomplishments - oh, and her famous menor, Leonard Bernstein.
Ode to Beethoven.
Mo fan here 😀
Marin Alsop is a modern genius!
Beethoven was very special and talented. Lastly, he was a trailblazer.
💛
Why did I start singing Joyful, Joyful from Sister Act 2 when I heard Ode to Joy this morning?
Waiting for his next Album
So, basically he wasn’t Black. K, got it💀
In the "War of the Worlds" people found sanctuary in church. Symphony Halls . . . where people could gather when it's cold outside and hear languages without words.
6:14 A look back at Desmond Tutu later on Sunday Morning
👏👏👏
20 years ago, I was in a group singing class. On the first night, the teacher asked everyone what is the one piece of vocal music they'd want to perform if given the chance. Everyone but me said Handel's MESSIAH; I said "Beethoven's Ninth." Five years later, I got to do it.
It's so confounding, to me, that, for some reason, G-d feels the need to pressurize us, through adversity, to bring out the best in us. I wish He could figure out a less harrowing way to do it. I wish joyful music could come from joy, and not from suffering.
Joy and suffering flow from the same well . . .
@@CathyS_Bx Counterintuitive, but true.
Kind of like comedy.
without the darkness, how would you know light?
Nothing confounding about something that was constructed out of human emotions and behaviors.
👂🏻
I've often wondered if playing the chorus of "Ode to Joy" over a loudspeaker could diffuse a potentially violent crowd or a tense standoff.
Well, it worked once to calm down a tiger (in the Beatles movie HELP)
Where is the CLOSED CAPTIONS??????????????????????????????????????????????
What was life like before Beethoven? Same as it was after.
I can't hear Ode to Joy without thinking of John McClane saving Nakatomi Plaza
sad
I think of Rhodesia and the EU
HA. God has a sense of humor. And he obviously loves music. Which both. Get me through my day.
This song=Olympics anthem and nbc Olympics and of course the eu anthem oh of course the milliemum
I can personally vouch for the quality of the FAKEABABY shapewear.
So happy that it arrived quickly and just in time for a party.
Love how it gave me an hourglass figure isntantly!
Didn't NASA send a gold (maybe platinum) record of 'Ode to Joy' into space?
5th?
@@HunterPeale Maybe so.
@@HunterPeale You may be right :)
It was actually Dvorak’s 9th Symphony (New World Symphony).
How did they know how deaf he was ?
It will always be the theme to when the vault opens in Die Hard.
CBS, Apparently, all of your videos are without closed captions. How could you go this low, CBS? TWO THUMBS DOWN!!!
SAX-A-MA-PHONE! SAX-A-MA-PHONE!
I remember about a year ago that the woke crowd said Beethoven needs to be canceled and classical music is racist! They are certifiably insane!
Who puts a mask on Beethoven...eat me!
Wow...close your eyes and listen to the music..stop making judgements on what people look like.
Personally I think what’s her name Ariana Grande is much better!
