    "Wing Chun" - a documentary sponsored by Shui On Land. The film shows how we can use Wing Chun and its philosophy to improve our daily life, as well as investigating its claims to be scientifically based.
    Made in Hong Kong, China and Macau by an international production team, the documentary was directed by Seamus Walsh and produced by Bill Yip.
    The film's narrator is Vincent Lo Hong Sui, Chairman of Shui On Land, who shares his story of how Wing Chun has informed both his business and personal life, helping him to become one of Hong Kong's most successful businessmen.
    The star of the film is Master Lui Ming Fai, a student of Master Ho Kam Ming and descendant of the Great Grandmaster of Wing Chun, Ip Man. Master Lui takes us through the forms of Wing Chun as well as sharing his insight on it's elegance and practicality. The scientific testing of Wing Chun is provided by Dr. Justin Lee of Chinese University of Hong Kong.

    I have practiced Wing Chun for a long time... Wing Chun is, it is no doubt, the best art for street fighting. I survived in many street fights, using the deadly slug footwork, Tan Sao block to handle fierce crazy multiple attackers at the same time on the street as well as on the rooftops. Poking the eyes and the throat, attacking the groin, and headbutting are real-deal techniques. From my experience, Wing Chun is the most effective on the rooftops where thugs cannot even move a millimeter...

    Wing Chun is an extension, further development of a person. It makes them humble, precise, disciplined and many more things. It builds character, understanding and respect. It guides you, challenges you, defines you and it is something that can never be taken away from you. Wing Chun has helped me though a very dark and strenuous year, for without me practising and training wing chun i would not have been able to think clearly and make sense of everything. I have myself to thank for my dedication and my perseverance and i never gave up. Same goes for wing chun. It is a journey, an art, a discipline, a lifestyle etc, and it is yours to make, take and master. To each is own in wing chun and what it can do for you.

    I have been practicing Wing Chun for 11 years now. It has come in handy a few times,example, when I was first starting to learn Chum Kui (about 2/3 months of practice) me and a bunch of friends were attacked by about 10 guys and without even thinking I used what I had learnt and dispatched every single person who tried to attack me. Its not only effective for fighting but also as it said in the documentary a good basis for everyday decisions.
    Practice Wing Chun properly and reap the benefits!

    Perhaps those people who claim that wing chun is useless in MMA fights is correct, I agree. As you can't use a lot of wing chun techniques in MMA fights. A lot of wing chun and other kung fu styles would be useless in these scenario as I myself do practice wing chun and used to fight in MMA rings here in the Philippines. It's not the question if it's ineffective or not (of course it is). But it's totally useless in MMA as all of my attacks are deadly enough though I was disqualified because of it. Eye gouges, elbow techniques and attacks, neck chops and the like are deadliest aspects of wing chun that would make short work of any street fight but won't be allowed in the ring. Wing chun is powerful enough to destroy anyone in the ring if not for the rules. To those who despise wing chun, Why not ask the practitioners of JKD about wing chun or better yet why not try to fight someone who is using it. Please stop badmouthing the art. and stop making any hate speeches about it...

    • @thegoldenqaseeda239
      @thegoldenqaseeda239 Před 10 lety +2

      I understand the deadliness of wing chun because i do a kung fu style deadlier but something can be deadly and yet not as effective at the same time because it was invented to fight people who could not fight.

    • @reyvictorilao645
      @reyvictorilao645 Před 10 lety +3

      Not really... and of course it depends, wing chun as per GM Ip Man's oral history was created for the purpose of Yim Wing Chun fighting an experience Fighter/ a Warlord. If you say that it is ineffective because it was intended to fight those people who could not or at least doesn't know how to fight then you're mistaken my friend. This is the same reason why Wing Chun was looked down by other kung fu styles as this was originally created for a girl's self defense against a master of kung fu not some random guy who can be easily beaten to a pulp

    • @thegoldenqaseeda239
      @thegoldenqaseeda239 Před 10 lety +1

      The thing is it was invented in a time when people did not know how to box, boxing is so effective even Bruce Lee had to learn it and adopt it as his main attack and defence. Those people in the past could not box and thus arts invented to fight them lack the techniques to handle modern fighters like Boxers and kick boxers, also it Wing Chun was invented in isolation of other world martial arts unlike today in which one can learn any martial art including Wing chun and then conclude which is best, i agree wing chun still has a place but like most martial arts is limited unless mixed with modern boxing, kick boxing and grappling arts etc. Today i saw a UFC fight in which the fighter's arms were touching and entangled so a wing chun technique could have been very effective there but such entanglements are rare.

    • @reyvictorilao645
      @reyvictorilao645 Před 10 lety +4

      Like I said Wing Chun can yes be less or totally ineffective in the ring with MMA were there are rules. but then again I would disagree that wing chun is already limited as it cannot adopt to some modern arts like grappling and such.Wing Chun as it was said by GM Wong Sheun Leung adapts throughout the times that is why you have the Chi Sao (sticky hands) and Mok Dung (wooden dummy) with those two techniques you can still practice, train or even develop your own fighting style within the principles and tenets of wing chun.
      If you say that bruce lee adopted boxing as his stance and defence, then think again. Although Bruce adopted a lot of boxing techniques in his defense he still didn't use at his main, his stance yes it is boxing as it moves a lot but the footwork is already in wing chun as it was being taught in wing chun (see WIng Chun Science of in fighting) in defense yes again I agree that his fighting pose can be boxing but then again most of the time that he blocks punches and kicks are wing chun.
      In a martial arts match or even a fight where there are rules wing chun wont stand a chance (i.e. in UFC and other MMA competetion groin kicks, eye gouges throat chops and the like are illegal, while in judo or aikido matches punching ain't allowed or in TKD's throwing is not allowed as well as n boxing kicking) but remove those rules wing chun will emerge triumphant. like I said I used it a couple of times with MMA fighters and other martial artist. Before they disrespect the art as it wasn't effective at all, but when we fought they agreed with me that wing chun is totally ineffective if there are rules but is superb when no rules are to be followed.
      My friend I respect your opinion and I only aired my answer/ thought as one who practices wing chun. I don't want to fight or to brag as it would only make the situation worse. I hope you can get your point as I already got yours

    • @timsevilla830
      @timsevilla830 Před 10 lety +1

      The Golden Qaseeda yes, in the old times people don't know how to box. But still it's not designed for the ring it's designed for street fight situations. And boxing is pretty much used mostly in the ring.. But wing chun isn't designed for the ring so it'll be ineffective

    Great video, I think one of the other great things that carry over from practicing Wing Chun is the removal or decline of sexism. The style was created by a woman, it can be done by people of any age, size or strength. It empowers people regardless of gender and breaks down preconceived ideas about what strength is. Great documentary!

    • @happierabroad
      @happierabroad Před rokem +1

      there is no sexism in fact. women are physically weaker than men in general. everyone knows that. you are programmed to be offended by that even though you know it. society is upside down and inverted. truth and honesty are taboo. even in China they will admit facts. Only in America do they deny them.

    • @happierabroad
      @happierabroad Před rokem +1

      Furthermore, if you think men and women are equal in every way (which we all know deep down is false) then why don't you tell the NFL, NBA and baseball managers to make all pro sports co-ed since men and women are equal in strength and ability? lol. They will all laugh at you of course. Even in pro tennis, men and women do NOT compete against each other in the same tournaments one to one. There are mixed doubles of course, but never two men vs two women or male vs female single players. We all know why. Stop denying reality. Only in a culture of decline like the West do people start denying obvious realities that even animals and children can see.

    @cokrowinoto Před 10 lety +22

    Sometimes it is difficult to understand why there is so much animosity towards Wing Chun. Maybe because of its popularity, maybe because some Wing Chungers are simply over-egotistical about their arts to the extent of degrading other arts. In our school we always teach our students to respect other martial arts because we believe there is no single good or bad martial arts - only good or bad practitioners. Furthermore if someone really wants to harm you, they will, and they can, one way or another, disregarding your type of martial arts or grade. Each martial arts has its own objective or objectives and if your objective/s as a student or practitioner does not meet those objective/s then you should choose another arts - if it works for you keep it, if it doesn't then leave it. But always respect it.

    • @MrDioXIII
      @MrDioXIII Před 10 lety +12

      I agree 100% Especially that last part. There seems to be a lot of egos running around in regards to martial arts, both by outsiders to Wing Chun, and inside the organisation itself. I was reading a Wing Chun Book yesterday by Master Yip Chun (Yip Man's son), and he addresses this issue in an interview. Seems that there are too many people who claim to know "secret techniques", and show off, instead of improving the art.
      He also mentioned that when he invited known direct disciples of his father for a dinner/seminar, they mentioned that Mainstream Wing Chun now seems to have abandoned a lot of the teachings. Certain stepping movements are abandoned, and there is now an overemphasis on one technique/area of techniques. This can be seen with a lot of emphasis on rapid chain punching, and relatively little practice with Chi Sao. A lot of people who have trained with "Grandmaster" Leung Ting have noted a lack of skill in the basic Chi Sao and basic stepping, which is a problem. In the interview. Master Yip Chun stated that his father and he have something like 80-90% emphasis on Chi Sao, which does wonders for increasing reaction time, and thus helping "in fighting"
      Likewise, with the rise of combat sports, such as MMA, there has been an increase in ego amongst many, who claim that certain arts do not work. In contrast, I believe that there is nothing wrong with mixing martial arts, and there are some particularly deadly ones that have taken the best from each style (Krav Maga, Systema, PKT Kali and more), yet the attitude is wrong. Instead, the proper attitude should be something equivalent to Bruce Lee's, who found Wing Chun to be very effective in the tight quarters of Hong Kong, but not so effective in the open spaces prevalent in Los Angeles (I believe). Thus, the improved up the style, and borrowed from others, making JKD. He didn't think "My style is the greatest, and Karate/Boxing/Muay Thai ect is crap". He respected and embraced the techniques and concepts of each art, and added them to his arsenal.
      And when you, how can you go wrong? You can't!

    Most Chinese of our generation are shallow posers. Chinese Kongfu as well as Chinese traditional technology, science and mathematics all has its foundations in Chinese philosophies. Ancient Chinese people are smart and capable because they are really educated, they are educated by the Classics. While today, we all chase the shallow exteriors and ignore the core of wisdom, that's why we don't have real Kongfu.

      This is what modern "fighters" dont understand.... they only understand the fight part.... martial arts is supposed to be taken as a whole mental spiritual physical... you cant seperate these attributes... but you get the usual youtube warriors claiming this way of breathing is better than this way of breathing... the end product is to live no matter what way you breathe through your mouth or through your nose

      @Artisan Wooooosh! the point is there is no SHIT martial arts! Nobody spends 1000s of years to create shit MA?! your not going to enroll into a class you dont like.... you get to pick the art! You get to pick the lesson that is right for you! You get to pick the tutor! How hard is it to understand?! You want to compare whos better? Mike Tyson, Ali, Mayweather, Connor Mac, Khabib? Do you understand these words? Do you understand dance? do you want to dance to my beat or your beat? All arts have a punch and a kick, now you figure it out! Lesson over!

      @Artisan if you practice martial arts and incorporate a 'shit martial art' say... No touch chi to test the absurdness of it... You can supposedly claim it helped you develop.
      I'd say it's a valid point but indeed a 1 year Thai striker is probably going to beat a 30 year wing chun practicioner.
      But not a 30 year martial artist who doesn't discriminate on styles

    Some people disrespect the art but dont know how too use it. Some people respect the art because they understand it. A real art master piece is not made over night and is a lot of hard work and depends on "YOU" You are becoming art. Wing Chun is definetly effective in any street fight or Mix sport is just depends on you and how you practice Wing Chun some ppl may use it differently from others, but me I see it as an ability that will enhance your learning ability
    Absorbing ability
    And
    Expessing yourself once thou express thy self in a fighting matter Wing Chun will win. Ever wonder why you dont see Wing Chun in streets and posted on a video is because their is no Sport or TV or anything like that. It's because its an art that will not be taken into the media for "pleasure". it is more.

    I can't understand why anyone would claim Wing Chun doesn't work in real life. It was already a popular and widely practiced martial art long before Ip Man even became popular.
    Comparing this to other martial arts is simply a waste of time. Most martial arts don't really teach you how to truly survive.

    The skills you learn in any martial art is an extension of the actual fight in you if you have the smallest amount of doubt in you then nine times out of ten you will lose regardless of the style..I studied kung fu in late seventies and there was no grading system and all fighting was full contact with no pads or gloves also you were never taught to fight in controlled ring environments because there were no rules as most strikes and moves were to disable .

    Nobody seems to question why can a woman invent an entire idea of martial art out of the blue just because some bandit warlord wants to marry her. All great art has the backing of deep and philosophical theories, and these can only be attained by generations of people who willingly sought the solitude of research and meditation in poor and remote areas away from the material world. Just like scientific research.

      when you say wing tsun suck than you also say white crane suck or monkey hand kung fu suck. Their so many high skilled wing Tsun fighter they would destroy you. Ever see a 110 kg guy do chain punches in a sandbag? 8 per second? but he´s also soft when he need to to get for his goal the throat. Wing tsun isn´t a sport or a art. Wing tsun is fighting for your life with 110 % when you need to. Wing tsun is kill in 1 second when you have to. You my frind have never trained wing tsun with a good sifu or you just a troll. go watch your mma or boxing or whatever but dont talk shit when you have no idea. wing tsun people are either disrespectful. And i also dont like hyper soft wing tsun like kernspecht wing tsun and my sifu isn´t member of ewto. When you have a problem with ewto talk shit about ewto. But dont talk shit about wing tsun. it´s a great system very eficient, with a good ratio between soft and hard.

    I've practiced for over a decade and then really studied heavy on the jeet kune do side of the system. Because of my structure jeet kune do flows easier for me not by a lot but enough to where it taught me to be soft. I remember the days people thought wing tsun was fake. Those people really aren't around anymore because hearing to be soft was crazy trust me I grew up around western boxing style and mindset on one side, on the other side I grew up around martial arts chinese boxing style. My first 7 years of wing tsun I could not get soft and flow the right way and buying a dummy for 1000 USD. wasn't the best thing to do either. It was hard to reverse the hardened mindset it gives you takes years I've just recently improved techniques by being smooth and right flow, and I was stuck for about almost 4 years. I've practiced for a little over 12 years now total. Being soft with strength and technique is the hardest thing to do. Respect to all true sifu's and disciple's around the world. Love these documentaries.
