  • Bob Pellerin (CTOBOB) looks into what to look for in a used server. Reliable machine can be had. Keep in mind that the more recent a server is, the most likely it will run newer operating systems.
The parts most likely to fail on serves are:
    - Drives
    - Power supplies
    - Fans

Do you have a video on an on-premise setup for startup tech companies that can eventually connect to the cloud, or hybrid ops?

Thanks for the comment. We don't have such a video at this time. We may add one as time permits.

for a VMware home lab, would you say it would make significant difference in power consumption if I run it 24x7 or if I power everything off every night? Thanks

Dépends on the load during the night, but I would tell you to simply monitor the power usage and decide if it is worth the effort.

Can you replace the main mother board with an R742 motherboard. Can one upgrade from an r630 to a r742 by swapping out the mother board ???

Not sure. I would think not as not everything may align.

i'm looking into one of this too, what is the spec and how much?

    • @BobPellerin

You’ll have to look at what is available to you in your country. Used servers prices can be all over the place. As to specs, you can get what you need/want. More cores, faster cores, more raid cache…

I end up purchased HP DL360 gen9 with 384GB RAM 8x146SAS, I have installed esxi 8.0 and nested 4 esxi vmhost with a few VMs for my home lab, just curious about the power consumption between old dell and HP as I do have 2xdell R610 and HP dl 360 Gen 7 they all consume power around 120-140w when running idle , where as my HP Gen 9 start up to 320w and then later on idle at around 160-170w. How is the dell R630 and R640 power consumption like?
