25 Tricks Manufacturers Use But You Won't Fall for It Anymore

  • You buy a chocolate bar in a package that claims the thing is 25% bigger than its previous version. Then you pick a shampoo that has "only natural ingredients" on the bottle and costs surprisingly little. Ooh! Now stop. Do you really get a great bargain or is it just manufacturers fooling you? Think twice - marketing experts are talented manipulators!
    For example, a bag or a bottle itself may look bigger than others produced by the same brand, but its weight can be absolutely the same! Some manufacturers aren't strangers to using optical illusions to make customers think there is more product than in reality. Empty space inside boxes, inflated plastic bags, labels stuck at the top of glass bottles so that you don't notice they are half empty...

    SUMMARY:
    - Keep in mind that a product's ingredients are always listed in order of their proportion.
    - An effective trick is to make a product attractive on the outside and leave it blank and boring inside.
    - Customers perceive food sold in tall, skinny containers as having fewer calories than those you buy in wider and lower packages.
    - People even consider junk food to be of higher quality and healthier if it's wrapped in kraft paper.
    - "Fresh" or "farm fresh" labels on products don't have anything to do with how fresh the food actually is.
    - Most producers show the amount of sugar, fat, and calories for very small serving sizes.
    - You can see a product's packaging claiming that it has "0 trans fat" or "0 saturated fat" per serving. Unfortunately, the manufacturer's "0" is quite different from your "0."
    - Manufacturers often write that their new product is twice as big as the previous "edition," but in most cases, it's not true.
    - To make their products look better than they are, manufacturers often create their own mix of healthy ingredients and put this blend at the top of the ingredient list.
    - Some stores can go as far as to make their flyers look like parking tickets you just can't ignore.
    - "Lower calories" and "reduced fat" sound tempting! But these are extremely tricky terms. They most likely mean that this product's version contains fewer calories than the previous one.
    - "Made with..." This sign attracts many customers. Unfortunately, a product "made with maple syrup" usually doesn't contain much, if any real thing.

    I got wise to manufacturer's tricks back in 1969, when I was 12 years old. That was the last year that nickel candy bars were available. To replace them, manufacturers started offering dime candy bars. But when I compared the dime ones to the nickel candy bars - by setting two five-cent ones and placing them against a single dime bar, I discovered that the two nickels offered more than one dime - both measuring longer and thicker than the single one. From that day onward, I was always suspicious of "new and improved."

    • @Normal1855
      @Normal1855 Před 2 lety

      Did the package say how much the candy bar weighed? If so, you paying for what's in the package. They're not cheating you.

    • @cjmarshall0221
      @cjmarshall0221 Před 2 lety +1

      @@Normal1855 I didn't say they were cheating me. But it is still a trick. The 10-cent candy bar was bigger than one five-cent candy bar, but not the same size as two. Which meant you were getting less of a product - about 25 percent less - for twice the money. Same thing as using air in a bag of potato chips to make it appear bigger. Even though the weight is clearly marked on the package, it deceives the eye into thinking you're getting more of a product.

Same as the regular fruit, they just make it seem healthy and all so people buy the more expensive version. How do I know all of this? I used to work in a fruit farm and saw the way they package everything. Two versions, a regular package and one that says “organic” they don’t do anything to the fruit, only to the bag or whatever you’re buying.

    There's something very tricky here too, I've noticed in 7eleven and OXXO (similar to 7eleven) that coffee cups are same price (and some going higher) but from the middle to the base the cup keeps shrinking xD I mean, the base is smaller every few months, I noticed that because of how it feels in your hand, it was kinda U shape and now it's more like V shape and I even compared it to a older design (by older I mean, 1 year old) and the difference is stunning! 🥤🥤🥤

    I was hoping to see half-full bags of chips, candy bars that appear twice as long because of a carboard stiffener, volumentric disguises where cans are shrunken down in size but yet (to the untrained eye) appear the same. These, to me, are the most insidious of packaging. You could also get into explaining the differences between jams, jellies, and spreads. Or the fact that canned foods are heavily tuna in water, uncondenced soups, and even ham. How many remember that ice cream manufacturers switched from half-gallon (64-oz) containers a few years back to the standard 48-oz we have today? These tricks are endless and quite frustrating to the consumer.

If one were to go to your local restaurant and read the ingredient list on the package if it is provided at your table then go read the ingredient list off of the larger package at your local grocery Market. Notice the difference although they are the same product by name.

    Always read the nutrient content as well. Over here we use the metric system and it always states gr per serving (ignore) go for gr per 100gr this way you know that if a certain food states it has 47gr of sugar per 100gr of product you know you buy something that is 47% sugar (for imperical system users work out at home how to figure out how much % per weight so you don't have to do lots of math in store). Also I always look at the kg prices or gr prices for better comparing (for instance mushroom pack A says 1.85 for 400gr great value pack, mushroom pack B smaller and is 1.50 for 300 gr. The kg price clears any doubt because
    Mushroom A = 4.63/kg and mushroom B = 5.-/kg. Even toilet paper can be decieving with amount of m per roll. Know your comparitable prices.
