In 1965, our 6th grade class went on a field trip. Back then mothers of classmates would volunteer to drive 4 or five kids to the event. One of my classmates parents had just bought a new 1966, two door Caprice, red with black vinyl top, black interior. My teacher knew I wanted to ride with the group that went with that car and she put me in that group. I was so excited to ride in that new Caprice. Thanks for the walk down Memory Lane.

My parents owned the first year Caprice. A 65 white with light blue interior. The first year only offered the 4 door Caprice which had many of the same features as the Impala SS, but wrapped in a more luxurious package. This lemonwood yellow 66 you are featuring is just gorgeous and with the 427 makes it even better. I bet there weren’t too many Caprices made with the 427. That makes it more rare and special. Hi, Lou! The Caprice was Chevrolet's answer to the Ford LTD. It started out as a trim option package on the 1965 Impala Sport Sedan (four-door hardtop), and for 1966 it was expanded to a full top-of-the-line four-model series with the addition of the hardtop coupe like Rick's car and two- and three-seat woodgrain-paneled wagons. The Caprice took Chevrolet luxury to a whole new level and it remained the flagship bowtie for 30 years. Nothing like getting your kicks on Route 66 in a '66! BTW, when I was a kid one of our neighbors, who grew up with my dad and has known me my whole life, had three 1966 Chevys. He had a Tuxedo Black Impala SS that he and his wife bought new, a Bel Air four-door sedan and a Caprice coupe. At the same time his father had a Marina Blue '66 Caprice four-door. I've told him maybe he ought to get himself a '66 Biscayne just so he can say he's owned the whole set! LOL! Lou, this was really exciting to see! Thanks to you and Rick for taking us along on your thrilling luxury-laden Turbo-Jet ride! P.S. In 1966, Chevrolet was the prime sponsor for "Bewitched" and "Bonanza", and if you've got a little over an hour to spare, I think you'll really enjoy this great old promo film here on CZcams for the 1966 Chevrolet cars and trucks featuring Lorne Greene. czcams.com/video/_va0UbNTD4U/video.html

Lou, This video is great! Two in a row for me (first, last weeks red ’66 Mustang - of which I myself owned several back in the day - , and now this ’66 Chevrolet). I grew up with late 60s Chevrolets (my Dad owned a ’66, a ’68, and a’69). Consequently, I myself owned 11 of them in the 70s through the 90s. I love these full-size Chevrolets but we rarely see much about them these days because the more popular mid-size cars get most of the attention these days. Thanks for a great video. I am wondering how you find your owners of these great classic cars. Thanks for producing these great videos.
Hi Kevin, Happy to read you enjoy this video, and the last one too :-) Glad to read you've had several of them. My pleasure sharing this video, and you're welcome, Lou
thanx so much lou, these are the cruisers I love to see, it's amazing the transition and styling the Impalas and Caprices had in the 60's, I don't believe I've seen many, (if any), of the station wagons of the 66, (that I can remember), I love to see them. I even go back and watch the older videos you do because you bring the best to CZcams! keep 'em coming!
Thank you for doing the Trunk N' Treats. It was nice to see the photographs of the Bel Air and Biscayne models. I imagine that those were the first to be crushed in many cases.
Who doesn’t like Rick? Unique set up and the condition … Would have given a lot to stuff that motor in my once owed 65 impala ss convertible Never understood how these frames could improve to handle big motor mega torque back in the day I know what happened to parts of mine with my small block 😎 Often visited a local welding shop due to above and would literally glance over, walk around, or sit on ! multiple 396 and 427 blocks with holes punched through them from late nights racing and pinned tachs ☠️ Thanks Lou ! And that rear view mirror “ gps”
Had a white over bright blue '66 caprice 283, console and gauges. Loved it so much bought another, red on red 327 fact 4 spd. Tgen found a high option car that had an engine fire. Swapped in power windows, tach, tri-volume horn, tilt/tele, vacuum trunk release and most of the multiplex system(amp was damaged from fire). Had a 3:31 posi in it. Such a great car. I would put 3:55 or 3:73 gears in your car, will transform performance as they were choked by 2:73's or so iirc

I always liked the formal roof on the '66 Caprice. Also, these cars had fantastic looking door panels and seats (bucket or bench). Color combination is great on this car. Nice to see another local AZ car (I'm likely within 20 miles of this car). Thanks to the proud owner and Lou.
Love the looks of that Caprice. The roofline of those always got my attention.! Yellow w/ black top - oh yea ! Big block power, that's the bonus feature. ! Thanks for another great video, Lou. !
I noticed and surprised at the fact the top of line Chevrolet did not have power brakes. When in the engine compartment there was no power brake booster behind the master cylinder and the brake pedal was raised.
Very cool car. I know it puts you in a good mood every time you take it for a spin. Regardless of what might be on your mind before driving it you’d be happy afterwards lol.
That color is Lemonwood Yellow, I own most of those treats, and a few he doesn't. I have the Tilt-Tele tag, and a very rare engineering book, that belong to an employee of GM. I have Neve seen the plates and napkins. I no longer own my Impalla "SS" convertible. It was a 283 2bbl car new. It was Marina blue with white top and bright blue interior. I twas an Illinois car, where I from and a total rust bucket, when my older friend bought in the 80's.
Hi musclecarfan74, Thank you for sharing the color of this car. Happy to read this car brings back memories of your blue car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Nice big Chevy Bowtie!!.. Revell recently came out with a nice 1/25 67 impala SS..I just might have to add one to my collection and build it someday...
Beautiful example. Actually, the intent of this model, even with the 427, was luxury, not sport. For that was the Impala SS. The hotrod look and sound is done well and the owner's preference, but I would have this car with the factory optional spinner-spoke hubcaps and thin stripe whitewalls, with a mellow exhaust sound. My uncle had the '66 Caprice wagon and my grandfather had a '66 Bel-Air 2-door that he owned until he passed-away in the early 1990's. On an ironic note, the uncle that had owned the '66 Caprice wagon acquired it and had it detailed! I have no idea where it is now.
@JC, Where I lived in East Vancouver, a neighbour and friend had the bronze 1958 Chev, or was it Pontiac wagon? His son played lacrosse with me, and Bill used to drive us kids to practices/games in it!
@@mr.blackhawk142 I believe the Chevy spinner spoke hubcaps are from '64-'66. It was definitely one of the nicer styled ones. Usually they were ordered on "loaded" models to give added touch of luxury.
@@mr.blackhawk142 Great story. Those 3 tail-lamp Chevy's were part of the American landscape for decades. I remember my neighbor has a '63 Impala sedan. White with a bright red interior. I recall being taken to school in it on a rainy day with a bunch of kids.

Conversely, the L72 427 425 hp was originally equipped with a Holley carburetor, aluminum intake, rectangular port heads, solid lifters and forged pistons with 11:1 compression ratio. Hi Lou Ivan I J here. I enjoyed the video of you and Rick and his Antique, Classic and Vintage Muscle Caprice Coupe. I would have asked for the original factory rally sport rims that came with the ride if they were in not so bad shape if it were me I would’ve had all five Factory Original Rally Sport Rims Reconditioned. The rear rap around taillight lenses with the two bars on the rap around taillight lenses were only made for that one year. That Big Block 427 4BBL Jet is a definite monster of a Power Plant and to a GM Aluminum header to come with it installed in it he couldn’t get any better than that because, what did that factory aluminum header have stamped of approval on it. It was GM. Now that’s what GM meant back in their hey days. It was keep your GM all GM all GM all year long and around. To bad who ever Rick brought that Ride didn’t finish going all out ordering all the Bells 🔔 🔔 🔔 🔔 🔔 and Whistles for it. Because that’s what I would’ve done.
My family was a Ford family but I always thought the 65-66 Chevrolets were stunningly beautiful. This one is unbelievably nice!
Hi JWelchon, High praise :-) Lou
thanx so much lou, these are the cruisers I love to see, it's amazing the transition and styling the Impalas and Caprices had in the 60's, I don't believe I've seen many, (if any), of the station wagons of the 66, (that I can remember), I love to see them. I even go back and watch the older videos you do because you bring the best to CZcams! keep 'em coming!
Hi Mouse, Happy to share this "Cruiser" with you :-) Appreciate the kind and encouraging words. You're welcome, Lou
You had me with '66 Caprice - but add the butternut yellow oops lemonwood w/black vinyl roof and 427/425 and I'm in love,
Dream car. Thanks guys 👍
Hi Bruce H., Happy to read "I'm in love" :-) You're welcome, Lou

Beautiful Caprice in a great color ! Big Block to boot ! Thanks Lou !
Hi Rudy, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this Big Block car :-) You're welcome, Lou
Thank you for doing the Trunk N' Treats. It was nice to see the photographs of the Bel Air and Biscayne models. I imagine that those were the first to be crushed in many cases.
Hi Jed, Happy to read you enjoy the trunk & treats of this car :-) Lou
Great looking car Lou and that 427 makes it even sweeter, nice find 👍🏼
Hi Richard, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car & with the big block too, Lou
What a nice piece of history and the 427 makes it really special. I love the sound, it sounds really powerful
Great video Lou, thanks so much!
Hi Gary, Happy to share this 427 Caprice with you :-) You're welcome, Lou
Who doesn’t like Rick?
Unique set up and the condition …
Would have given a lot to stuff that motor in my once owed 65 impala ss convertible
Never understood how these frames could improve to handle big motor mega torque back in the day
I know what happened to parts of mine with my small block 😎
Often visited a local welding shop due to above and would literally glance over, walk around, or sit on ! multiple 396 and 427 blocks with holes punched through them from late nights racing and pinned tachs ☠️
Thanks Lou !
And that rear view mirror “ gps”
Hi Finn Green, Happy to read you had a fun 65 Impala :-) Thanks for viewing & sharing, Lou

@@loucostabile 1966 was a great year Lou Thanks for the reply . I enjoy your videos keep them coming I watch everyone of them !
I always liked the formal roof on the '66 Caprice. Also, these cars had fantastic looking door panels and seats (bucket or bench). Color combination is great on this car. Nice to see another local AZ car (I'm likely within 20 miles of this car). Thanks to the proud owner and Lou.
Hi Allen, Enjoy reading the details on your comment on this local car to you :-) You're welcome, Lou

I like it! Super nice Caprice with a 427 to boot! Thank you, Rick and Lou.
Hi Chris, Happy to read "I like it!" :-) You're welcome, Lou
I noticed and surprised at the fact the top of line Chevrolet did not have power brakes. When in the engine compartment there was no power brake booster behind the master cylinder and the brake pedal was raised.
Hi Allan, Thank you for sharing what you noticed, Lou
Awesome 66 Caprice!!! Excellent video as always Lou
Hi Edmund, High praise :-) Thank you, Lou

Great survivor and big fan of the color. Jealous your in Phoenix. Balmy 8F here in NH
Hi Keith, Happy to read you enjoy this car :-) I'm in Chillinois and it's 19F, Lou

NICE !
Beautiful car. Nice to be in Phoenix.

That's a New England car, sold at Rowe Chevrolet in Mass. I'm surprised it's still in existence!

Nice big Chevy Bowtie!!.. Revell recently came out with a nice 1/25 67 impala SS..I just might have to add one to my collection and build it someday...
I believe it is actually an AMT kit..
Hi Thomas, Happy to read this one is "Nice" :-) Thank you for sharing there is a model of a 67 Impala too, Lou
Cool original literature too!!
Nice when the literature is there too :-)
sweet car
Hi Martin, Happy to read you enjoy this "Sweet car" :-) Lou
Hi Joseph, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Uncle & Grandfathers cars :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
@Joseph, I HAD to Giggle that hubcap to see EXACTLY what they looked like! The spoked wheel is my all-time FAV for cars esp. the 60s Lincolns!
Another beautiful ride Lou, I'm not 100% sure but I believe the aluminum intake was stock for the 427
Hi The Bearded Guy Jeff Lawless, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Hmmm, not sure. Hoping a Viewer can confirm if the aluminum intakes were stock, Lou
@@loucostabile I did a quick search and it would have had an aluminum intake but it was different than the one on it.

Late to the party here. The L36 427 390 hp was originally equipped with a Quadrajet carburetor, cast iron intake, oval port heads, hydraulic lifters, and cast pistons with 10.25:1 compression ratio. Conversely, the L72 427 425 hp was originally equipped with a Holley carburetor, aluminum intake, rectangular port heads, solid lifters and forged pistons with 11:1 compression ratio. The L72 was only available with a 4 speed manual transmission and air conditioning was not available with this engine. While I’ve seen the Impala SS with the L72 I’ve never seen a Caprice with one. Not to say none were ever produced but most were equipped with the L36.
Very nice car, wow wow wow.

Great car. Thanks as always for a fantastic video. One question though. At about 13:20 in the video, what is that red light underneath the dashboard?
Hi Todd V, Happy to read you enjoy this "Great car". The red light is a pull down to turn on the flashers, Lou

But all in all Lou let Rick know that he has a true Diamond 💎 ♦️ and Gem 💎 in his hands 🙌 and possession.
Sincerely Yours Truly

From the Motor Trend article: "Rather unusual, incidentally, is that the car used less than a quart of oil from new to 833 miles on the odometer." Not quite sure how to take that. A good thing, or bad?

Nice that it doesn't have that horrificallyy bad "Powerglide" transmission.

That intake is a full on race part from gm. That engine is working until it's over 5k rpm . Those square ports are not any good unless you really stand in it.
