Taryl's Personal Log Splitter Upgrade! Make It Awesome!

  • In "It Came From The Parts Room", Taryl goes over his own personal log splitter that he uses often and adds a bunch of nice touches to it in order to make it easier on himself. For instance he adds an electric start to the engine and shows you how he wired that up, plus he added a log rack to the side, strengthens the beam and more!
Prior to and after the fix, 2 unlucky travelers break down in Podunk and find themselves at Taryl's mercy for the night. Taryl warns them to stay out of the parts room but after hearing a few strange noises the travelers can't help but wonder what's up there. There's always more to the story in... "It Came From The Parts Room"
And as always... There's Your Dinner!!

You're going to rub through your hydro oil return line on your new tray. You'll need to put a piece of sacrificial hose over the return line where it hits the tray.

@@NA-pg4lf Howdy NA!! Thanks for the comment. I was up to see Cousin Taryl last year and we made a short video he put on facebook. If I recall correctly, Elkskins was driving a go kart around the parking lot. I wasn't able to make the trip this year but hopefully I can next year. I have some more ideas for a video and a few tricks up my sleeve to share with all the Taryl fans but that's only if he will let me back in the shop. You're pretty handy with making your log splitter more useful. You need to make an automatic return and they're simple to do. Extend your control handle on the bottom the same length as the top. Then you need to attach a rod to your RAM. As the ram goes out the rod will contact the bottom portion of the handle pulling it in the opposite direction. I think this might be a worthwhile video you doing that. John

I had some large trees taken down and logs cut to ten feet or so. Sat in yard for a year and a half. I was going to get a splitter etc. A guy came by and wanted to buy them. I said they are yours! I didn’t want money I’d a paid him to haul them away. He came with a splitter like that elec start etc. He cut them up and split them right there, hauled it away and left two face cords stacked on porch !!👍

My MTD log splitter came with side trays, which is a really desirable feature. I bought one of the Harbor Freight clamp on caster wheels and put it on years ago. My biggest gripe is pulling the cord and starting it in freezing weather when the hydraulic oil gets thick. An electric start feature sure would be nice.

Taryl, I would add a flip out extension to your catch table to extent it's capacity. Then flip it closed into the stationary table for vertical use. A pin will keep it secure when not in use. Make it narrow enough to drop into the existing table and shorter so the pivot will use the end of the existing table as a stop and the new extension will be on an incline. Great video as usual.

  • @Gunbudder
    @Gunbudder Před rokem +8

B&S is pretty awesome in that they have basically the same engine block for the different options. makes it super easy to add on options later if you want. I've noticed Tecumseh is usually the same way with having tapped blind holes on the block to add on a starter or a torque converter. I'd like to see a starter kit added on to a block that doesn't have the holes drilled or tapped though, that would be pretty interesting (especially figuring out the gas can if you don't have a nicely molded one like yours)

Yep, unlike Honda who go out of their way to redesign the same engine where you can't add electric start so they force customers to pay them more for the option. It was B&S who fixed Honda's decades of oil dilution mistakes too...

Tarryl you need two more additions to the log splitter. A wedge that splits a log 4 ways with one pull of the ram. The other add on is a t-handle with a 2inch ball to move the splitter around.

    Thanks Taryl.
Did similar Mods to My 35 Ton. Took the parts from a blown up 15Hp and they all fit My 12.5 Hp.
Used the AC windings for Lights on a Cross bar on the end of the Splitter Beam. I split 100% vertical so that puts the lights overhead.
My battery Box has the Electrics built in to it and it is not mounted on the Splitter since I use that set up between Machines. just set it into a holder and plug it in. Same with the Gas can, Just a holder for a Red 6 Gal Can and boat connectors,
I replaced the Jack with a 12" Dolly wheel, removed the hitch and put on a vertically pivoting Draw bar with a handle on the end, put the hitch on that. Not I can roll it around or drop the hitch on the ATV or the back of the wood trailer.
I have all the Parts to make it Self Propelled, just the intuitive to put it together..LOL
I tried the foot plate extension, but ended up bending it up since I am in the woods a lot and the area is not so flat around the Base, I just use some old 2x4/2x6 just setting there. For Elm I have a piece of Horse matt on the foot plate so the Wedge cuts all the way through.
An oil cooler is in the works too...

Due to recent shoulder operation he has a real difficult time with the pull start. I have to check & see if we can mount a starter. It has a Honda engine. The cradle & the foot extension are also now on my todo list.

@@rverro8478 They build them cheap as they can so they can sell them for greater profit. Bigger pumps, motors, and cylinders means they cost more. Also why the plate the log stand on with this one is so tiny, the tongue tube is made out of tubing that looks like it's gonna bend under just moving the machine, and it just has a tube instead of a real trailer jack.
Frankly I'm willing to bet this one didn't have a 8hp briggs on it new. My money is it only had a 6.5hp china engine just judging by the build of the rest.

I think there's room on that splitter to add a HAMS cooler!! Nice job on the upgrades. Also good information on the flywheel swap regarding magnet location. Easily overlooked. Thanks gang for the video.
