- Aaron is a relatively green eMTB rider looking for a poppy ride, more travel and longer battery life. Sheldon has been shredding single track for 13 years, but he’s tired of getting lapped on the trail by eMTBs. TPC gave both riders their choice of electric mountain bikes to demo for two months. Aaron took on the Trek Rail and Sheldon chose the Orbea Rise. How do these riders handle the torque, weight and travel of these bigger bikes? Let’s find out.

I just rode a full suspension E-bike with bosh CX performance with 85NM, doing really technical trails, uphill and downhill, only where motorbikes would go, oh boy, i did like 24km of it and at the end i just wanted more. You dont get tired, you climb up hill with ease, you ride really fast, i can focus more on improving my skills, go longer and faster, i did rent the bike for 2 days, and i really want to get one soon, its a game changer, and there is no going back 😁
The good news is the 2023 Rise in carbon has the option for the 540wh battery. Add a range extender and you have close to 800wh on tap. Great for those days when you need to keep up with folks on Rails :)
Ok, I have a Trek Rail-7 and I love it. One thing I never understand about these tests is, regardless of brand of bike, you guys get on these bikes, ride a bit in the lower power modes and then spend the rest of the time in TURBO and complain that the bike is too torquey or others complain they're not getting a work out.
Holy Cow, if that's your issue, there are lower power settings to use. Personally, I'm 65 years old and WAY over weight but I ride 95% of the time in ECO mode and only go to Tour (2nd off the bottom) on like two short steep climbs in the park I ride (2:30 hr. ride) and it's not because ECO or I can't/won't do it but I'm not 40 any more, let alone you guys who look like you're still in your twenties, so I get a small 10-20 boost here and there. Tour is plenty in almost everything I've ever encountered. But then, I've always loved the exertion of hill climbs, whether on a road bike or mtb. Even as a senior rider.
I love my bike but to tell you the truth, if I wasn't 65 and suffered the last 10 years with multiple health issues, I'd probably still be riding my 90's Litespeed hard tail with 8 speed Grip Shift, V-brakes, 26" wheels, and 2.10 tires. But I am, and so I enjoy the little extra boost from ECO along with the upgrades of suspension and 29' fat tires, and drop post, gads I love my drop post...of my Rail.

They are awesome, but I do still enjoy my acoustic bike as well.
I’m riding the new Levo and the M10 Rise. Both great bikes..Rise is very close to perfect trail bike in my opinion…only fault is rattle noise from motor.
I’ve got my Rise down to 40 pounds. My Levo is 49 pounds.
This is one of the most interesting videos for me, especially as I'm currently eying up an orbea rise.
I've had a go on a few full fat e bikes and to be honest I've hated them, too heavy, too much torque, requires no exercise or effort what so ever in getting to the top of the mountain and very little riding and climbing skills required compared to a "normal" bike.
On the downs I found the full fat e bikes way too heavy and cumbersome, not agile or poppy at all and just a bit dull. Felt more like being on board a tank.
I have to agree with both of these riders and I already had a hunch before watching the video that the rider who was a ebike newbie would love the orbea rise but the guy that was already riding the orbea rise would hate the full fat e bike and for me its just backed up everything I thought. Do you need that amount of torque from a full fat e bike? No way, you may as well just ride an all electric mx bike instead. They are also too heavy and it takes all the fun out of why i like mountain biking and why I fell in love with riding in the first place
It would be great to do a follow up video of this and swap the riders to see what the other guy thought of the trek rail. I bet he wouldnt like it either. great video guys. im going to buy an orbea rise!
" too much torque,". Are you riding in full power mode? If so, what do you expect? Lower the power settings to the lowest and say there's too much torque. Or, don't buy an e-bike. They're not for everyone and they're not mandatory. Freedom of choice. Just don't shit on those of us who do like our e-bikes.
Go with a V-Strom 650. With the new one they’re basically giving the 650 away and the engine (I’d know since I’ve got it in my SV) is a gem and sounds great with a Yoshimura slip on.
But the V-Strom isn't allowed on the same trails. And weighs a bit more...
saw a video of a sketchy ascent where several dirt bikes lost momentum and got stuck while an ebiker just powers past them. too much weight & lack of agility!
on singletrack what do you need a 650 for? go ride it on a county road off into the horizon. 😆

Like it or not, they are here to stay. Only thing now is to recognize when they are helpful and get more riding in!!
E-bikes are motorcycles. Don't see the point.
No. You got it all wrong. They’re more expensive and built for worse than motorcycles.
Different things for different purposes.
I can E bike through every single Trail here in my hometown in Alaska, you cannot do that with a motorcycle
and you don’t have to get a motorcycle license with an e bike. And you’re not having to pay insurance with an E bike.

Motorcycle has throttle. eBike does not have throttle. It's a pedelec; something completely different.

:\" who are they to tell you? The ebike police ?" When I first got my e-mtb, Rail-7, and went on some forums, I was so disappointed in the limited mentality of many mountain bikers. They're as bad or worse than hiker were when mountain biking was starting out.
"This is our turf", "nothing with a motor....ie. nothing mechanical on trails", "they'll ruin MY trails", "you can only enjoy the outdoors like I do", etc....
Sorry, but they're all posers.
