We're looking at a 1963 Oldsmobile Starfire Convertible in Provincial White Paint. The engine 394 (cubic inch) CI and 345 (horse power) HP. This car is unrestored and has only had two Owners.

My Brother, Gary, owned one of these! It was light blue, with black convertible top. I think it was mostly black interior! The 1 of many unique things about these 63 Starfire’s was the horn was encapsulated into the inner rim of the steering wheel!

That little light on the ashtray in the dash was actually a locator lamp that came on with the dash lights so you could see where the ashtray was at night.

Oh yes as a young boy i was fascinated by the cars of the time "1959 - 1973 " and could probably name everyone of them , my shelf was full of AMT models and Ford dealer promotional's .
Me too. Had a ton of AMT model cars as a kid. Soon as a new one would come out, I'd get it. Great memories and this Olds is a great example of fine early 1960's cars.
Lou: You show many cars with massive trunks, but this one is so long in the back, it might be the most spacious! The Oldsmobiles were awesome to look at.

My mom had Starfire convertible bought new in what must have been the cooler months as it was triple black with no a/c. The hottest car I have ever riden in, I still remember the white-hot chrome and stainless just waiting to brand you. It was the last non a/c car mom ever had.

One (of many) of my fav cars. Stainless, leather, buckets, console....BAM. First year, I believe, for the inscripted "transistor radio".....instant ON, no waiting for tubes to warm up. The dawn of the semiconductor industry.

The Starfire convertible actually had higher base sticker prices than the 98 convertibles from 61 thru 65. The 98 convertible was $4400 and change. The Starfires were $4700. I believe it was because of the genuine leather bucket seat interior. 98s had morokide vinyl bench with a fold down armrest. Leather was unavailable on 98.

Olds called their vinyl Morocceene. Pontiac was Morokide, and Buick was Cordaveen. Chevy was just plain Vinyl.
There was nothing as exciting as visiting a new car dealership in the early mid 1960's and getting behind the wheel of the latest models on the showroom floor , I can never forget sitting in a new plush 1960's car and that distinctive new car smell was just out of sight . A completely different experience in comparison to stepping into a car dealership today.

My father has his 63 Starfire almost totally off frame restore finished to stock.
The engine alone 394 finely tuned had a stump pulling torque along w/ approx. 400 factory HP-
Love the ‘OLDS’ & sadly, often overlooked. 1960’s, so much style. Now, we have ‘boxes’ we sit in w/ not so much styling and they all seem to look alike.

My Dad was a Lincoln Mercury salesman and eventually a L-M Dealership owner yet he bought a 1964 Olds Starfire for my Mom and me to drive while I was learning to drive. Mom had to use a phonebook to be able to see over the dash LOL. It was a land yacht, fast and fun to drive. Mom used to get wolf whistled a lot when driving this car...

This also has trunk opening button in glove box , you missed most important item on the car it has super drive , try it pass any thing on the road , on flat ground car was very heavy my 2 Dr hardtop weighted in at 4200 pounds this was my first car my father bought me in 70's love it , factory paint name was Pacific mist metallic , thanks for the memories Doug in Ga

Kind of reminds me of my buddies 62 Olds 88 with a bored out and warmed over 394 from an Olds 98. Also the comment about ash trays. My Buick Electra has four ash trays and three lighters, but no cup holders. There were no drive through restaurants back then. You wouldn’t eat anything in a car this nice anyway. And, of course, I wish I had enough cash to do some shopping at Corvette Mikes!!

They discontinued the Starfire nameplate in 66 but then brought it back in 75 and again discontinued it in 1980. I personally had a 79 Starfire when My exwife and I got together. It had the Iron Duke 4 cylinder in it and it was a virtually indestructible motor. When they brought the nameplate back in 75, it was a "subcompact" which was basically the counterpart to the Chevy Monza or the Pontiac Sunbird and the Buick Skyhawk. All of which was based on the Chevy Vega platform (that should tell you about the quality of the car LOL). I also had a Monza too LOL. The Monza was my first car but they were a real piece of junk as were most of the cars in the late 70's and early 80's. I went to my senior prom in the Monza and ended up breaking down that night because of a blown head gasket. Oh the memories LOL. Just a bit of history on the second gen, as for the first gen I knew they existed but I have never seen on other than pics and videos so I didn't know as much as your video just taught me Lou. TYVM bud and keep up the great videos. You just made a good day into a great one for me AGAIN. I learned something new, and that makes a great day for me.

Another rare car you found Lou. Enjoyed looking it over with you. This looks to be a gem. A real honest car. Look closely and it tells you it's story. Thx.... P.S. I believe the Starfire was Oldsmobile's response to the Grand Prix, which Pontiac introduced in '62. I also need to say that this gentleman, Bill is a great 'tour guide'. He is knowledgable yet he never seems to get into that "thing" where he feels he needs to sound like he knows everything about everything (my pet peeve, as you know lol). He uses terms like, 'I believe' or 'I think so' as well as 'yes, no, maybe'. Point I'm trying to make is; You, Lou are doing a tremendous service by entertaining and educating viewers as far as the amazing history of the automobile. I believe that there are quite a few people that deduce facts from the the short interviews that you do with the presenters/owners. The way you do it is fantastic. You look, you touch, you feel, you comment and you add the emotion that I share about cars. I can almost go into a hypnotic trance just by running my hand over a quarter panel. You ask all the right questions but far too many times the answers you get are incorrect. Either the interviewee believes they are correct or they feel the need to sound "All Knowing" as if knowing about old cars is 'Wizardry'. Or maybe it's ego driven. The problem is when incorrect info is presented as fact, then it gets retold and so on. It's not a crime not to know everything! There is no 'magic' in knowledge of automobile history. You don't even need to own an old car. All that's needed is passion, study, research, more passion and then re-study, re-check the facts, cross reference the facts, then check 'em again. Did I mention passion. Owning a fleet of classic cars DOES NOT automatically make someone an expert. More often than not it makes them a salesperson. Sorry for the diatribe, but hey, at least I'm paying attention, right lol?? You are a credit to your craft, thx. And if there's something good to be distilled from my little rant; I would really consider buying from Bill. The guy has the same presence every time he's shows you a car. He doesn't act like 'King of Automobiles' when he shows us a $500,000 'Vette and he had the same enthusiasm displaying this honest Oldsmobile. The guy is impressive.

Michael, the Starfire model goes all the way back to the early 50s.
Quite nice original condition car. From the days when "muscle cars" were full sized coupes and convertibles. It was only a few years later when they moved down to mid-sized cars. Oldsmobile introduced the 4-4-2 the next year, 1964. Oldsmobile stopped making the Starfire in 1966, the same year that they introduced the Toronado.

These cars were quite expensive when they were new. It shares the smaller 123" wheelbase "B" body chasis with the Dynamic 88 and Super 88. The convertible had a base price of about $4700 compared to the 126" C body Ninety-Eight convertible priced at $4400. The Starfire was more expensive due to its more powerful engine and exclusive leather bucket seat interior.

IT WAS GORGEOUS AND WHAT MADE IT SO WAS THE SIDE BRUSHED ALUMINUM TRIM ABOUT A 14 IN. SO TO OUT DO HIM I PRICED A CADILLAC CONV SERIES 62 ,''NO DEVILLES YET''.LIST $6500.00 ABOUT 500 MORE THAN THE STARFIRE SO EQUIPT. Lovely Starfire! It's big n bright and roomy. Red n white combo is a fav of mine so I always love it n looks just right on this. This one's quite long n it's real pretty from the sideview. Looks like one of the big ol smooth riders from years back. That engine looks big... but it's a big car! Love those pretty emblems. Cool dash n big too, n that door is def huge n looks made to last! Beautiful car, Lou! Interesting comment on the fins. They were more visible on the '63 than '62 which is surprising, but they look great! My only improvement I'd make on the interior would have been having the name STARFIRE written out in script with a rocket "crossing the T". That aside, in a rare move for me, I prefer the coupe over the convertible because of the rear portion of the roofline, and the sexy concave back window, lost on the convertible top. The same is true for the '64-'66 Starfires, perhaps even more on the '65 & 6. Those two were beautiful, but closer to the regular full-size Oldsmobiles. That roofline (on the Jetfire too) made all the difference. That's just my opinion. With the '62 Starfire, it didn't matter because the roofline (with the top up) was very close to the hardtop.

I just LOVE these Star Fires from the Early 60’s! Especially the 1962 version, In the Redish color with that Insert is just Awesome. Very Unique Design Inside, and Outside.

This Starfire has been so well taken care of. Those peaked rear fenders are quite a unique touch, although I wonder how difficult it might have been for the sheetmetal workers to shape them. I hope it has found a good home.

A friend's parents had a car similar to this one but it was a Dynamic 88. Same hubcaps as this one.

At 6:47 you can see a glimpse of a vent between the dashboard and center console above the gas pedal.
my dads car !! he bought a new 63 holiday 88 4dr mist green 394 high compression ...he had it my whole childhood and I got to drive it a couple times when I received my license in 1980...I could tell you that engine did not like the gas quality of the late seventies .... thanks for sharing

I find it interesting that it has a tach, yet not so much as a temperature gauge. Speedo, tach, and gas. That's it. I find it funny in a way.
It's a really cool piece that shows a marked transition from the 50s to the 60s. Almost like seeing evidence of evolution. :-)

Fantastic car! No a/c. Those had great engines, marginal transmissions and front ends that ate ball joints, bushings and shocks! Plowed through corners. Engine sounds like it’s out of oil!

this car is only unremarkable because i walked by it on 42nd and Anza street from 1979 to 1985 in san francisco california. some older individual would rarely move it from spot to spot throughout those years. i want to say, as a young man of fourteen to twenty, i had always lusted over it as a powerfully capable american car, in the age of the datsun B210. same exterior color, same interior color. my favorite vehicle on the golden gate "trek," which would commence, once my grarandmother and grandfather would return to 535-39th Avenue. 94121 at the stroke of 11:30, or so nightly.

The cars in those times were not very economical safe or as environmentally clean by today's standards but they were just so much more appealing then the look alike cars of contemporary times. The difference is that when i was growing up every model car was unique and out of a grouping of cars in traffic you would always desire to own at least one or two of them , not so today because the cars of today are just clones of one another moderately priced or expensive they all look alike, very boring .

I love the clocks on the dashboards back then. The cars had better styling, they were exciting and each had a distinctive look. Every car now looks the same, bland and ugly!!
