There are moments in life when things become more expensive than normal and can make you feel overwhelmed and stressed. In my own life, this past month I have been spending more money than I normally do; however, I have been able to lower my expenses and save money by being more intentional. In this video, I share 10 ways to save money when life gets more expensive.
1. Give Yourself A Long Window To Prepare
There are some expenses in life that come at a complete surprise and there is no way to prepare for them; however, many expenses in life we know ahead of time they are coming. One way to make save money when life gets expensive is to give yourself a long window to prepare for it so you do not have tons of expenses coming at you at once.
2. Don’t Forgo Prevention
When life gets expensive, it is very easy to get caught up in all the things you need to do that you forgo preventing things from getting worse. It is important to make sure you are maintaining your things regardless of what is going on so you don't have additional expenses.
3. Spread Out Your Purchases
Another way to save money when life gets expensive is to pay off certain expenses ahead of time. When you give yourself a window to prepare, if you pay off things little by little in advance, it becomes a lot more manageable.
4. Focus On Accomplishing One Task Before Moving On To The Next
Whenever life gets expensive and you have many things to pay for, it is easy to get caught up in the big picture of all the things you need to do. Instead, focus on one expense, get it paid for, and move on to the next expense. This makes it much more manageable and less stressful.
5. Prioritize What Needs To Be Done Now And What Can Wait
Some expenses in life need to be dealt with right away while others can wait. It is good to create a priority list of what you need to pay for now and what can wait. This can allow you to avoid paying for everything at once.
6. Find Cheaper Alternatives
If you are strategic with your spending and do research to find cheaper alternatives you can save money and make it more manageable.
7. Ask For Help Instead Of Money
Seeking help from other people is a great way to lower your expenses. Most people are willing and able to help you with certain tasks like moving or driving you somewhere; however, many people are not willing to help when it comes to loaning money. It is important to seek help from people instead of asking for money.
8. Be Careful of The Small Purchases
When you have many large expenses coming all at once, it is easy to not see the significance of the little expenses. Small purchases can quickly add up to a much bigger expense if you are not paying attention. It is important to treat small purchases just as significant as big purchases.
9. Accept Your Limitations
When life starts to get overwhelming and chaotic and you have multiple expenses coming at you at once, it is easy to start putting unrealistic expectations on yourself like over working or being extremely productive. This can often harm you in the end and so it is important to accept your limitations.
10. Always Be Ready To Take A Financial Hit
It doesn't matter if life is getting more expensive or it is normal, you should always be preparing for a financial hit because they can come at any moment. It is important to always be living below your means and saving as much as you can so that when life gets more expensive, you're prepared, and it doesn't affect you as much.

How do you lower expenses when your life gets more expensive?
I avoid going to Thrift Book app, and others.
I ask myself why is life getting more expensive. Is it something I'm doing or is it out of my hands? I tend to cut back on things I can such as groceries, eating out, dedicate one day for running errands so I can save on fuel. Learning the word NO. It comes in handy.
Lucky for me I get more joy and contentment from living a spartan existence than I do owning things.
Constantly evaluating what’s needed and what’s not. We love driving through New Mexico. Great scenery. I miss Atlanta! See a braves game for me
Muy buen video, aprendi un par de costs muy valiosas
Getting your car inspected was a really wise thing to do.
I feel investors should be focusing on under-the-radar stocks, and considering the current rollercoaster nature of the stock market, Because 35% of my $270k portfolio comprises of plummeting stocks which were once revered and i don't know where to go here out of devastation.
Safest approach i feel to tackle it is to diversify investments. By spreading investments across different asset classes, like bonds, real estate, and international stocks, they can reduce the impact of a market meltdown
Agreed, It's essential to diversify your portfolio. While quality stocks are a solid foundation, you should also consider other assets to spread risk. Thankfully, I can attest to the success of this approach aided by professional guidance seeing my portfolio of $330k grow by 15% this year alone... maybe you should do the same.
A lot of folks downplay the role of advisors until being burnt by their own emotions. I remember couple summers back, after my lengthy divorce, I needed a good boost to help my business stay afloat, hence I researched for licensed advisors and came across someone of utmost qualifications. She's helped grow my reserve notwithstanding inflation, from $275k to $850k.
The decision on when to pick an Adviser is a very personal one. I take guidance from *Gertrude Margaret Quinto* to meet my growth goals and avoid mistakes, she's well-qualified and her page can be easily found on the net.
My needs are kind of unique and complex. I'll contact her nonetheless, and I hope I'm able to make something out of it.
Grüezi from sunny Switzerland! I binge-watched all of your videos over the course of the last few days, and I love them all! You are a wise man!
Agree used mattress is bad thing to buy. 🙂
Gotta have some standards!
Been looking forward to you having made your move. Your attitude and wisdom are stellar.
I don't have to suggest being minimalist. I'm sure you appreciate the benfits.
I say this as a 73 yr old guy who has always lived solo, planned for wife and kids and didn't come close. But do I have the STUFF. I make home and garden beautiful, but it is a trap and not a life. You'd suggest relationships and experiences. You're living it and you are SPOT ON! I'm proud of you.
I'm spending these years decluttering, realizing aquIring this STUFF is how I spent my life only to give it up.
I'm happy to see, at 30, your insights will take you in a much healthier direction.
Welcome Home!
Hope you love it.
I trust you'll keep it simple. Cool like, like you, but simple.
on a low income we need some luxuries so our treats are to go to luxury hotels and read a book and have a coffee, they are quieter than cafes but I don't see why being poor means a poor life
I love the "Don't Forego Prevention" method to save money. Thinking long term, it not only saves a huge amount of money, but also time and mental energy! Thank you El Agustin! :)
I moved last September and kept my duckorations. Don't want to spend too much on them.
If i move I'll probably sell most of my furniture and may not replace it. Furniture free is a thing I may try to stay fit and minimal. Welcome to your new home.
Congratulations, Austin, and I look forward to seeing the new place come together. With the exception of some metal cabinets and some futons, I don't think I've ever bought new furniture -- so much more interesting to have stuff with a history. As far as mattresses go, I may have mentioned I once bought a used headboard/bedframe and the seller threw in the mattress for free so I took it. It's not all that different from sleeping in a hotel or Airbnb -- those mattresses have been used too! LOL
Great you are safe at your new destination . I’m happy for you!
It’s inspiring to see how patient you are with your purchases. Sometimes I’m impatient and want to spend on my purchases all at once
After spending so much money, you just want it to stop for a second!
I moved long distance aobut 5 years ago. I agree with what you said.I did it differently than you did. I had an older car and I didn't want to drive it cross country alone so I put it on a vehicle mover with 150 pounds of soft things like clothes, towels, blankets, in the back. ( They said I could do that.) I shipped several boxes by USPS. And I flew with 3 suitcases and a tote on Southwest. I had furniture I wanted to move and some appliances I wanted to move but it didn't make sense. I priced the Pods, U-haul, etc, and the numbers didn't work. I bought a new bed and a new sofa. Everything else has been used except for some of the kitchen items. I just got a free coffee table about 3 weeks ago. Someone was going to toss it in the trash because they had bought a new one.
❤ life is to experience while you're young and able bodied! Happy memories last longer than things!!❤
Oh my gosh it depends on the couch. I have a nice couch that is very solid but light weight so I move it myself all the time I've had this couch since 1995.
Well done, Augustine! Another great video. Enjoy your new chapter in life!
I move cross country with a Toyota Yaris. Somehow I hit an entire bicycle and 2 months worth of clothing and stuff in that car. AND I had a passenger!
My husband and I moving from southeastern PA to northwestern PA abd we identified with this video. We have been weeding out stuff to make the move easier. We bought a small secondhand camper and an electrical generator to make the work easier. Stopping for food got expensive quickly so I pack food for the drive.
Congratulations on your new venture in life.
Thanks!
Wow!!!! Thank you, Maria!
Looking forward to hearing more about your new place and life there!! I dig those cool lamps behind you
Can we get an apartment tour video?
I love how you have just embrace your “duckeration” pronunciation. My number one way to cut expenses when needed is to cook at home. My crockpot is my most used item in the house. Soup literally takes about 5 minutes to toss in the pot. I usually put the soup together while my coffee brews. Then, I come home to a house that smells like a country kitchen. Love it!
You know you are in a good place when you fall into a good routine that you are to. Spend a little time each day getting it together. I know, I just moved too.
I am considering moving out of my country, I feel super overwhelmed by all the tasks I have to do. Thank you for the video!
You're a smart guy, El Agustin. You plan ahead well, and save money even better.
I am curious about the how the cost of living in Georgia vs.Colorado differs. Always appreciate your videos.
I'm living in the city so it's a bit expensive, but certain things I've noticed are cheaper while others are more like rent.
@@ElAgustinPlease give more details about what is less expensive and what is more expensive
My favorite CZcamsr! Great video
Thanks!!!!!
I love how you live simple it helps living simple to save money go to thrift stores its fun and helps with expenses 😊
Welcome to Atlanta! Always enjoy your videos.
Another awesome video! Can’t wait to see your new “Duck-arations!” 🤣😉
Congrats Austin! I hope you settle in well
Yes, I would agree that you have to plan things out in advance. Don't look at all the things you need to get completed as one big object. Break it down into smaller steps or goals to eventually get you to the main big goal. Yes, try not to stress out because you don't need to ad health issues into the journey. Creating a to do list is the perfect tool to visualized and break down the steps needed to accomplish the big goal. It gives you the motivation to keep going each time you check off each small step completed.
You give very good life advice in this video. Enjoy your new location!
Duckorating, lol!
That sexy southern accent 😍
That sexy southern accent 😍
He waddles around decorating, thus ducorating😆.

Great tips Austin. Your pointers are practical and evidence of applying your mind to things. Many years your senior, but I learn some from you :)
Congratulations on your move! .. so everything you are saying makes perfect sense, & is similar how I approach a move. But it does surprise me, that many would not approach in this manner, & would face chaos & more expense than necessary = thx for info.😊
You give such amazing tips!
Congratulations! Planning to move back home to help family and save half my income. Excited for your new chapter friend 🎉
When you put duckerate on the screen it was hilarious! Thank you for being you- so fun! And thanks for sharing your advice with us. I can't get enough of your videos!!
Thank you 🙂
You continue providing UNIQUE personal finance advice!! You really think outside the box but your tips are always realistic and practical! ❤ love your channel!
So I've had to pay to get my front door replaced this month so to free up more money I haven't bought any new clothing and I've been trying to use up the toiletries and food I already have in my cupboards so I'm buying the bare minimum. P.s I love your new couch!
Thanks! I love it too! It's worth $1600 new, isn't that crazy?!
Welcome to GA. I moved here 10 years ago from Germany and love it.
Enjoy your new place!
My nanna used to say, A stitch in time, saves 9 ♥
I liked your last background. 😂
Congrats on your move!
I’m moving too next month and my finances will be out of wack for a while.
Thank you it's very helpful! 😇
When we moved one time we did not have a couch and so we only had a bed and put off buying a couch and until later
Congratulations!
I have lived in the same apartment for about 15yrs and it's not decorated at all
Second! 😊 Always waiting for the new upload!😊 Cheers!
Congrats on the new apartment Agustin! Love the personal tone of the video and the sincerity and relevance of your advice shines through as usual. Happy duckorating!
Thanks! I'm having fun duckerating!
Thanks for giving us a peek at your new digs, Agustin! Best wishes for an exciting new adventure for you. Are you in downtown Atlanta or way out in the suburbs? Hope the traffic isn't a nightmare for you. 🙂
Welcome 😁 back
Even if I don’t spend I still can’t save
It takes 2 days to cross southern Texas LOL. We did a long roadtrip once and planned to have the oil changed about halfway through
Hello el Augustin, como esta! Me alegro que llego bien a Georgia. Thank you so much for your fun way of teaching us how to save money. I am by nature a spender but life has taught me that it is important to save money for a rainy day. So I rely heavily on videos like yours where I can get motivated to save money rather than to spend it. Muchas gracias Augustin!!!
Thanks for watching and I'm glad they've been providing you value!
We missed you!
Smart to have the tie rods replaced by a mechanic because even if you did it yourself, like i have, the vehicle then needs an alignment done on the front end. I know how to do alignment also, but it's not as exact as a professional can do.
Austin your Videos is Super,i enjoying every new one..grettings from Salzburg Austria
I appreciate it!
Are super..is super was failure by writing
Great content as always, Austin! I am a firm believer in prevention. Money spent making sure my 2008 sedan is in good repair saves me from a lot of more costly headaches. Glad you got moved, and welcome back to Georgia!
The biggest lesson is to never buy a Kia! One of my biggest financial mistakes!
@ElAgustin haha, I tell my kids to stick to Honda, Mazda or Toyota!
I’ve also been keeping my 08 running. Love that little (paid off) car lol
Hello! 😃 Congratulations! Looks great and you will make it even greater step by step. I would have sell the same things as you and buy for the new place the same things like you( mattress, sofa, etc as a 1st step). I agree, when one plans the steps in advance, things are happening smoother. 👍
Thank you! Take care. (North carolina subbie)
I'M NORTH CAROLINA TOO
Me encantan los videos del Agustín
I hope you are here in Atlanta Ga 😊
Enjoy the ride ! 🏡 🏠 🏡
Another great video 🦆🦆🦆
I know we’re supposed to be saving money here but that desk lamp needs to go in my office. 🧡 🐪
I can probably pick up and move quit my job, I have the fund's, but don't landlords need financial references 🤔 job etc. Just curious how that would work, thanks for another great video, I'd like to see more minimulist videos please. It's hard for me to part with stuff that have so many memories attached.😊
I’d love to know this too
Previous landlords would be excellent references and maybe paying a few months up front (in his case, since he has the funds). Also, I think landlords can get credit history reports from on-line sources.
I was a bit worried about that, but what I learned from this experience is "Money talks." If you show them you're a responsible tenant with the financial means to pay rent and haven't burned bridges in your life, then they will give it to you. I had no trouble finding a place one I got here! And I used my past landlord as a reference!
@@ElAgustin Agustin, you could also use your you tube channel as a reference! Your landlord would probably learn from it!
Where is the speed limit 75mph?In Tennessee, 65 is fast enough!😳 Bare is not a bad thing. No explanation about the new mattress necessary!
Military people live out of a duffle bag. Everyone should try it at least for a little while.
Welcome to Project Management 101
Hey Austin, can you do a review on your Amazon mattress and include a link for it? Is it firm, soft? Does it smell?
Not to mention a tie rod on a car is of major importance to safety driving to the corner store, let alone driving across the country! BTW, how much did you end up paying for rent in Atlanta?
Yeah! I was so happy I figured it out. This car has been a money pit! About $1400! A lot more, but definitely worth it.
@@ElAgustin Dishwasher and W&D - heck yeah!😀
You inspired me of your videos.I need to save more.spend less.
How did you sell your furniture
Bro I hope you don’t mind humidity and mosquitoes!
Can’t wait to see your future duckorating.🦆
I got big plans!
💪
Is that The Silmarillion in the background? Are you by chance a Tolkien fan? 😁
Expection?
Austin, who do you bank with? Do you use a small community bank?
I had a couch that I use for good 18 years and I paid $30 at a thrift store, 2 years ago my friend got a west elm for $60 and she got her apartment I fested with german roaches, I got so freaked out and bought a new Burrow modular couch for $1600 but I actually love it
Upholstery furniture and mattress should be purchased new for that reason.
I bought my leather lounge ( couch &2 chairs) 40 years ago. Made by a friend who was an upholsterer. Cost $350Au. Needs reupholstering and will cost a lot. Most of my furniture is older, "inherited" from grandparents, etc. Solid... not cheap badly made stuff. Am minimalising a lot now. Older furniture looks good with less "clutter" in the room.
... and yes, definitely always buy a good brand new mattress!
Being from South Carolina, I have only one question. Why on earth would you move to Georgia?
Are you following me 😅😂. Just kidding. Welcome to GA. ❤.
Chuck Norris moves his couch without help.
Besides him obviously...
your videos are so insightful and i learn so much from them... but DUCKORATING? is that a pun???
Where are your muscles? Do you exercise?
Do you have a malinois?
I like to spend money i hate to save money because money dont give you enjoyment
❤
Really amazon matress? Can you tell me if its good quality?
Did you move back because you were homesick?
i stick to basic survivel and rest i avoid
El Agustin is a duckorating expert 😅😊
He sure is 😅😅
Duckorating *Master*
Why did you move? Is it cheaper to live there? What about your family?
To be closer to family and in a warmer climate. I explained it a couple of videos ago.
hello Austin: are you interested in buying a property as opposed to renting
once one has a property paid off, then one will only have those daily, monthly, annual expenses (excluding real property mortgage unless one has complete funds for purchase price ), but when one rents, there is always that continuous rental expense in additional the daily living expenses
