    As someone who started a business, I was shocked when I signed up for a “how to start a business” meetings at the community center and people were there listening and then said, “I want to start a business but I don’t know what to do. What should I do to make money?” Umm….I get helping yourself brain storm but maybe say, “I am considering starting a business and want to know how. But I don’t have an idea yet.” Nobody can tell you what YOU CAN DO when the weight of the business entirely rests on your shoulders. If you don’t want to do it, it won’t work. I was there with my idea but didn’t know the legalities and first, second, third steps to properly starting a business.

      Yes! I’ve had a similar experience with people asking me what kind of business they should start! I never know what to say…like you should be passionate about what you want to do, otherwise it won’t work!

      @@NataliaTrevinoAmaro i know you mentioned the monotony of sewing being a burn out problem for you but what is the solution to that do you think? is it moving to bigger and better aspirations like managing a team of seamstresses? do you enjoy the management side of things? i feel like the purpose of creative endeavors (mine being film, the filming, editing, writing, and sound/acting design of the whole thing) to BE the process that i come to it for. if i had the opportunity in my business if it did well to just do managerial work for a few hours per week and sit at home and do nothing i would be bored. while the problem is from the tough monotonous work each day isn’t that why we come to our arts? i love film but i don’t always love editing the videos afterwards, but it’s necessary to the projects i want to make.
      i was wondering if you had the opportunity to leave (we will disregard money for the moment but if you’d like to address it in your answer you can) or promote from the “made by your own hand” finesse that you and i both love with our creative projects would you take it? and would it bring you more fulfillment? i know you mentioned moving to bigger things so elaborate on that. thanks

      @@johnster02 This is a complicated subject to try to address over a comment but I'll do my best! As a designer, I want to create pieces but not necessarily sew them all. I love making the samples and doing the creative work, but making 10+ of the same thing isn't really ideal for me. Additionally, it's unsustainable financially speaking because as one person, you reach a limit really quick of how much you can physically, and therefore financially, make. Personally, I value my time with family & traveling a lot, so I'd rather pass off that work to someone else so that I can live my life the way I want to. Managing others doesn't mean you aren't being creative - in fact, it would give me the freedom to be more creative and have the time to expand on ideas rather than having to be focused on making physical product all the time. I think it's important to recognize that everyone's priorities and definitions of "success" are also different. Someone might be totally content with where I'm at (sewing everything, staying small) but personally, I want to create a greater change in the fashion industry and the bigger the brand, the bigger the change, so that's what I'm personally aiming towards. I hope this helped somewhat!

      @@NataliaTrevinoAmaro incredible reply. thanks for your input. the idea that being a manager wouldn’t eliminate creativity but allow for more time to expand on ideas rather than making the physical product and subtracting from the project because of the time it consumes was exactly what i needed to hear. thanks so much natalia.

    Thank you for all the meaningful insights in this video as not a lot of people share these things thats in the sewing/made to order business. I've only been running the shop for 3 months now and already felt so burn out because i wanted to do more marketing, taking shoots outside rather be sewing all day. And i felt like i wasnt starting right, i dropped my prices for the first launch and i felt like working for almost nothing. Is there any tips you can share in terms of pricing? like the invisible cost other than fabrics, time and packaging? i was thinking i might ignore some factors and felt like making nothing when i spent the entire day sewing. Thanks!

    • @NataliaTrevinoAmaro
      @NataliaTrevinoAmaro  Před 2 lety +2

      Thank you! I've definitely learned to charge my worth over the past year and a half because I also started with super low prices and realized I was essentially making no money because of those "invisible costs." I've raised my prices over to accommodate how many hours it takes me to make (from start to finish including cutting and ironing), plus an extra hour to account for marketing, photoshoots, the actual creation process, and then I factor in cost of materials (including threads, zippers, tags, etc.), and then I add a profit margin to it! The actual numbers depend on what you feel is good for you, but that's my general "formula!"

    Ok I have two questions
    1: what is a llc and do you need one to start a business?
    2: is a trademark like something when no one else can use your business name and logo and can you do it before you start your business?

    • @NataliaTrevinoAmaro
      @NataliaTrevinoAmaro  Před 2 lety

      Most people start with a sole proprietorship or LLC. From my understanding, the pros of an LLC are that you and your business are two separate things so you are not personally liable for anything whereas a sole proprietorship makes you and your business one and makes you liable. You don’t need to start with an LLC right away if you’re a smaller business. I don’t personally have it yet.
      A trademark guarantees that no one can use your name or logo. You should get it done early on just to make sure you don’t get screwed over by anyone.

    So at very beginning of starting up you didn’t have anything legal? until a few months later when your business grew? I’m looking into starting a business but I don’t want to get into the legal stuff until my business is going successful. If that makes sense. Before launching did you set up a P.O. Box or use your personal address? did customers pay thru an app like PayPal? Did you use your personal bank account or opened a business account?

    • @NataliaTrevinoAmaro
      @NataliaTrevinoAmaro  Před 2 lety

      Yea! I started during the pandemic so I didn’t expect “success” so soon, but once I saw that it was growing, I applied for my license! I started in June and got the license in September if that helps! I did have a PO Box from the start for safety reasons though. As far as payments, I always had a website so it went through that but it was linked to my person account.
