- The Medic, also known as Dr. Ludwig is one of the most important members of the Team Fortress Team. His actions in The Gravel War, Mann vs. Machine, and Classic Mercenaries allowed the rest of his team to thrive against waves of enemies - at the cost of their souls.
He did perform sinister actions, but they came with the best intentions. The discovery and perfection of Ubercharge was just one of them.

I remember my brother picking medic and running screaming into battle with the Blutsauger. It was a fearsome sight to behold. Doubly hilarious when he'd get 4-5 kills before being taken down.

I’m curious as to how the patient SURVIVED.
If you really think about it even the medic playstyle is insane.
Usually medics aren't on the front lines, even if they are they're basically just soldiers with a crash course on basic medicine that boils down to "painkillers and bandages".
AND THEN THERE'S THIS LITERAL MADMAN RUNNING OUT THERE THROUGH THE BULLETS, ROCKETS, PIPEBOMBS, STICKYBOMBS, ARROWS, AND THE OCCASIONAL FLYING CLEAVER TO HEAL HIS TEAM WITH SOMETHING THAT I AM CONVINCED IS MAGIC.

There is an amazing metaphor in his bypass of his deal with the devil.
He surgically removed the eight souls of the eight other mercs and attached them to himself.
This means he is the true soul of the team, as in, not only he keeps them alive and revives (mvm) them but also he is by definition the entire team's spirit. It's soul.

The medic is *insanely* smart, lol.
I personally don't believe that he doesn't have compassion for his patients. We saw with Heavy that he cares. I honestly think it's more of the train of thoughts, "This one's rude and thinks they know best." "Well, why not teach them a lesson?" Ending in the final decision of changing Patient to Experiment. In other words, NEVER piss off a Medic.

The only thing I have to say is that maybe the Medic took the CLASSIC Merc’s souls, seeing as both sniper and scout go to heaven briefly.
I did think that at first but Sniper's heavenly vision was a hallucination brought on my the Blue Whale Pineal gland, and I'm sure there was an explanation for Scout. I'd have to check again though!

@@em91198able I feel like the fact that he first says _we_ before correcting it to _they_ implies that the soulless "they" he's talking about is the team that he is currently included in, which during that point in the comics is the TF2 mercs. I agree that it is a little ambiguous though.
my head canon is that Medic died in one of his experimentations and he wished to be brought back for 50 years in exchange of his soul
because the way he phrased it he sounded like he did it before
"for ANOTHER 50 years?"
which couldn't happen if he didn't trick the devil previously
but the devil would've known his tricks by then if he really did
which would mean all his knowledge actually came from his experiments
and considering he had a medical license before he lost it means he should've been smart enough to at least know what normal doctors do

I'd also like to add that we know a bit about how Medic and Archimedes met, and it's very wholesome. According to Archimedes' cosmetic description: "Before Archimedes came into the Medic's care, he made his living through wedding dovery. A lucrative trade, but he always felt something was missing. He looks back on the day that the Medic stole that catering van during the prime minister's wedding as the best day of his life. He's been burrowing into the chests of unwitting patients ever since."
I love this, because it explains why the doves fly around medic in such a dramatic, angelic way in Meet the Medic. As wedding doves (assuming all of medic's doves are wedding doves), they were literally trained to fly around people majestically.
I love that description, it's really funny to imagine. But I've always wondered why the Medic stole a catering van in the first place.

I love how medic in many ways is the opposite of Mercy. She’s an angel, He’s a devil, Mercy is hated, Medic is loved, She is humane, He is not. I know theres no connection between them but its a funny comparison.
as a medic main i must say we might be insane and usually angry but with a simple thanks all that pain and insanity washes away it just switches to pure happiness a bit too much for a simple sentence but those who know medic mains pain will understand

I also appreciate when i get uber'd when going battle engie
It’s amazing what a little man with a widowmaker can do if determined enough.
That's why I make sure to buff all of my teammates leaving spawn, abusing crit-heals to build Über as fast as possible.
I wish you had mentioned how Medic exploited the side effects of his theft of the teammates' souls further and used that to recreate the respawn room in mobile pods during MvM
The fact that medic can steal a whole skeleton and the patients still wake up, surprises me.
It borders on the cartoonish, but I still love it!

Considering how all over the place and random TF2's lore can be, I'm surprised at how concise and well-structured this video was overall. Can't wait to see you cover the rest of the cast!
Theory since TFC Medic's face is covered; The TFC Medic IS Dr. Ludwig. We never see the TFC Medic's face, so it could be quite possible that the deal he made with the devil was to lengthen his life-span, which would explain why he looks younger than the other TFC mercs. (Bonus: In the Meet the Medic outtakes, Medic mentioned his new ability to make "gods." Plural. A typical mad scientist would only want themself to become a god, not give this power to others, so this detail is interesting to me.)
Also, tf medic has same eyebrows shape as tf2 medic

As someone who mains medic from time to time I do appreciate whenever my teammates get hurt a lot more than when they are fully healed, more for the charge than anything

I noticed a little inconsistency. If Medic removed other mercs' souls, then how did Scout get to heaven when he died? Or was it just pre-death hallucination?
Although it's hard to call it hallucination, since you can see Tom Jones in heaven, who was killed by Soldier. What's your opinion on that?
Simply put, since Scout is a direct gift upon the earth by God himself, Scout has something more than just a soul, and God can override whatever difficulty lacking a complete soul would present in bringing him to heaven
Scout is clearly not a mere human, but a divine being, with a divine soul, or something similar, and either Medic's soul-grafting surgery didn't work on Scout, or Scout has this whatever it is in ADDITION to his human soul, which he has since lost to the grafting procedure
It may even be that God simply granted Scout a new one once the surgery was complete, but in all instances we can pretty handily rely on God enacting direct intervention in some way for his Specialest Boy

I know that the TF2 cosmetics and hats aren’t exactly canon, but one of Medic’s hats imply that he was a part of Germany’s military during WW2.

It was confirmed years ago in a TF2 blog post that Medic isn't a nazi as it was seen as "too easy". I have heard people suggest he's Jewish. Seeing as his theme song is apparently based on Klezmer music & his family was kicked out of their home during that time. Of course, there's also his fondness for Einstein... and money.

For me, after mann vs machine and the comics, Redmond and Blutarch continued fighting. As seen in Scream fortress, they can still talk with the mercenaries, so maybe, the Gravel Wars continued

Medical license does not mean doctor. Having a doctorate means your a doctor in that field. If I were to guess, Dr Ludwig probably got a doctorate at some point.

I haven't even played much TF2, even then it was years ago and this video still gripped me throughout. Great video! I had no idea how deep the lore went.
In theory we could make something similar what medic did. Something that would accelerate the heart producing more blood cells to heal quicker. And uber charge would just be cranking that to 35.

I just wanna say it's a community created cosmetic and it being in the game has no correlation to the lore. He must have been involved in the war tho because at some point there was a mandatory military service starting from age 18

Medic of tf2 almost makes me not want to play the game due to how absolutely evil he is, but on the other hand, he somehow connects modern tf2 to its quake tf roots with how dark it all is. And i love quake and how dark quake is.
