    Thanks for the wonderful ideas. To make mine easier, I used a ceramic coffee mug, boiled the water for 3 minutes in the microwave. Worked perfect! Much love!

    This worked great for me, and even fixed the ones I messed up with the blow dryer. THANKS!

    So far I've found the best method to be the dip in hot/boiling water method, followed by steaming over a boiling kettle to tighten it up if there are still wrinkles. You have to be careful not to over shrink the capsule in the steam because I've had some shrink capsules actually split due to over shrinking! I've tried the hairdryer method but its slow and not hot enough. I think I've got a heat gun for paint stripping in the garage, which I might try.

    Exactly how I do it. Also, I make fancy labels using the PrintMe service at Staples (I don't have a printer anymore). You send in your design by email and they print it up for you. The only drawback is you have to go pick it up. The benefit is you get a full color laser printed label that doesn't smudge with liquid. It's also relatively cheap. I also attach them with "milk glue," which means they can easily wash off without residue when you finish a bottle.

      RuggedHomestead This is great! I’ll have to remember this for when I start making nicer labels!

      You just send an email to Staples@printme.com and it will send you an email back with the print code. There are other places you can print them out too. You can go to printme.com, put your zipcode in, and it will tell you all the places one of their printers is located. By me I also have Office Depot, a Barnes & Noble bookstore, several hotels(!), and more. Staples just happens to be closest. For those places, you can send your document to print@printme.com and it will get you started. Hope that helps.

    I prefer boiling water over the heat gun but both work well. I use a wooden spoon to hold the cap on as I begin the dip into the boiling water.

    right now i have a good handful of lock top bottles which is nice allowing me to sample easily once a month or so to check on progress. I've had the plan to do exactly what you are doing and probably will in the future. Do you see any reason i shouldn't do lock tops?

    • @ManMadeMead

      chris wiltse Nope! The only down side to them is the price for each one. If you can find a good deal on them go for it!

    I suspect your hair dryer is not hot enough. I have an older hair dryer that I have used 1800 watts and works well. the heat gun is very good. I have one for heat shrink in my electronic / electricity projects. For those wanting to try the hot water idea but not have there hand so close to the hot water, try using a small piece of tape to holder the foil cap instead. You would still water to slowly insert the cap end into the water slowly so that it seals it and no water gets under the foil.

    Do you have to use corks in your bottles when using shrink caps or can you put shrink caps on bar toppers?.

    • @ManMadeMead
      @ManMadeMead  Před 3 lety +1

      You definitely still need corks! The shrink wraps are really just decorative!

    For my meads I use wax it seems easer than your method and in my opinion works better. You can also stamp a letter in wax and use different letters for different recipes, ex peach and apricot is a p, while mandarins and oranges are an o
