  • Peak PUSHES the Dead 50 on North West Wanderer.
    Classes 20, 37, 40, 45, 50 (dead), 57, 66, 58, 90 (dead)!
    Signal Failures cause delays
    Carlisle & Preston
    10 August 24
Filmed initially at Carlisle but mostly at Preston.
The North West Wanderer charter ran Crewe to Carlisle with 50050 leading, 45118 at rear,
Carlisle, S&C to Preston with the Peak leading and the 50 at rear
Whislt waiting at Preston for the Wanderer coming in from Carlisle, we see a Freightliner 66 on the Malcolm contract intermodal with a pair of dead Class 90s in tow! Pantographs down on both electrics! We also see the Russell contract intermodal, GBRf's intermodal from Hamms HAll and the southbound Malcolm intermodal - all diesel hauled.
Then Preston Hellifield Carnforth behind D231 class 40 with the Peak at rear, but Class 50 still in the consist, running dead
The 40 then took the 50 off to Crewe.
A pair of 37s and pair of 20s arrived 45 minutes late after signalling issues at Wigan. To be honest I was enjoying myself enough not to have noticed!
After some problems with the 37s, they, with Peak at rear, took the charter off to Blackburn, Copy Pit, Todmorden, Manchester Victoria and back to Preston before the 20s took the train, still with the Peak at rear, back to Crewe.
The 50 had died with low water pressure before getting to Penrith on the outward leg but was pushed into Carlisle. It was the towed around until the 40 returned to Crewe!
We also see Tangmere and the Northern Belle enter Preston.

The footage from Preston was outstanding. I can't think of a more iconic loco to back onto a failed 50 than a 40. It brought back fond memories of the 1970's, and the 20s+37s only added to the nostalga. The team have done a remarkable job on 45118.
Probably the best video i've watched all year, thanks, Colin.

Yet another fab film packed with great takes. Especially loved the long take of the peak coming into Preston. Very nostalgic and reminds me of happy childhood Saturdays on WBQ seeing the Bangor - Newcastle services pass through usually with a peak at the front.

Hi the 50 passed Shap summit at 42 mph with NO assistance from the peak. Fearless failed at Eden Valley Loop. 45118 providing the power to Carlisle. The tour kept good time till track failure at Preston in the evening. The 37’s in typical style recovered time but we were held outside Preston. Fantastic tour only beaten by The Dambuster in 1988

Such a disaster ....... but happily countered by the lovely Avenham and Miller Park which lies just behind the jungle on the left of the picture.
