    Wide angle lenses (28mm or wider) have such a great depth of field, if you set the lens at f5.6 - f8 you can usually set the manual focus at around 2 metres and everything is going to be sharp!

    Thanks for this! I just watched my pictures of France and I was a bit disappointed with the results from my 14mm lens because of the distortion which I did not apply correctly. But hey... that is learning. Got a few cool shots with it.

      Hey Dennis! Yes 14mm is tricky to use! You can correct it in lightroom too. Hope you had fun in France!

    Matti Solanto had an interesting vlog called "Wide Portraits -Make Distortion Work For You" which made interesting points about wide angle portraits. To be fair, he used 24mm on full frame, and your definition for wide angle was 'below 24mm on full frame' so there is no real contradiction here. I like wide angle a lot, but I see two very distinct classes for wide angle: Rectilinear (where they pull the bend out of straight lines) and fisheye, where everything maps to a circle. Both kinds of wide angle lenses distort, but the fisheye is more like a funhouse mirror. I do think that your video is full of good advice and I have recently subscribed with full notifications. BTW, I love your enthusiasm.

    Great video explaining this ! The longer I shoot the more I tend to get irritated with distortion and I rarely shoot on a length less than 50mm anymore. I wish there was such thing as wide angle with no distortion but it doesn’t exist.

    I‘m actually thinking about getting the 12-24mm f4 next but the drawback for me is that it‘s probably not performing too well for concert photography and I‘d have to buy a filter system for it, which makes it kinda unpractical for run and gun shootings.

    To be accurate, a wide angle lens sees more or wider than a human’s eye. A telephoto lens sees less or narrower than a human eye. With a “full frame or 35mm film sized sensor”, a 50mm lens sees approximately the same as a human eye. That’s why a 50mm lens was always known as a “standard” lens. So anything less than 50mm is wide angle, anything more is telephoto. A 28-70mm lens is an excellent “standard” zoom that ranges from slightly wide to slightly telephoto. What he is talking about here with less than 28mm is “ultra wide”, and will indeed give a lot of distortion with close subjects. Always bear in mind that this is for a 24x36mm sensor. With a Canon APS-C sensor, which has a 1.6x crop factor, the lens has to be wider. That makes an aps-c “standard” lens approximately 31mm.

  • @paulm8157
    @paulm8157 Před 6 lety

    Well done. Good points and auto mirror analog - some resemble fish-eye lenses. Trite but true - a good way to learn about a given focal length lens is to use it exclusively for a good while (e.g., several weeks of frequent use). I find that 24mm (FF equivalent.) w/a is helpful for close-in street photography shooting from waist level. BTW, the old metric is that anything below a 50mm (FF equivalent and approximate match for human eye field of view) is considered wide.

    • @Pierretlambert
      @Pierretlambert  Před 6 lety +1

      Hey Paul! Thanks a lot! Yes good point about the human field of view. Is 24mm your goto lens?
      Have a great day!

    • @paulm8157
      @paulm8157 Před 6 lety

      Pierre T. Lambert My goto lens is a 24-80 ff equivalent zoom, so the wide angle is there if and when needed - I’ll mount the 24mm ff equiv prime when I know the shooting session will be close-in/crowded venue and a wider aperture is an asset. BTW, let me suggest a future vid for your next country venue - light painting. Scenic or exotic subjects at dusk or night might be a good adjunct for light painting effects, unless I missed a prior vid you already did on this subject. Keep up the good work.

  • @experimentzone4517
    @experimentzone4517 Před 5 lety +1

    Ok, so let’s get factually correct, Talking about wide angle lenses: A wide angle lens is any lens that sees anything in a smaller perspective than the human eye; in the case of a full frame sensored camera, that is anything less than 50mm. A 35 mm lens could be termed “wide”, a 28mm wide enough for most landscape photography. 24mm is very wide, and wider than that is “ultra wide angle”. The last fifteen years has seen a lot of really good quality ultra wide angle lenses, that are a lot of fun to use. If you have an aps sensor in your camera, like a Canon EOS 700 for example, anything wider than about 32mm is wide, less than 15mm is extreme wide!
    Have fun with your photography, and don’t be afraid to experiment! #shoottheadventure

      @Pierretlambert  Před 6 lety

      Hey! Thanks :)
      Great question. I needed the 2.8 for shallower DOF in people shots and night scapes. Otherwise the 4 would have been great. The ISO being so good no need to justify the 2.8 as much as before if you're not looking for shallow dof. Maybe the f/4 is good enough imho. Then add a prime with low aperture if you ever need :)
      Happy Friday!

    Glad the camera's fresh as a daisy after the clean. I dropped my 24-70 onto the steel deck of a ship during a recent trip to Iceland. Luckily it's a monster lens and only required a repair and readjust but it came back silky smooth. I hadn't realised that a few trips in hot weather 35-40degC had really dried out the lubricants. Sometimes there's a small upside to the downside or repairs ;-)

      Luckily despite it being very rough the deck was dry but the filter on the lens and the filter ring took most of the impact but messed up the lens alignment. Luckily the Nikon f2.8 whilst a few hundred £ to repair it is now serviced and silky smooth. And only 5 days in the workshop. Never damaged anything before and luckily I had a wide angle lens as a spare so still managed to keep shooting ;-)

    And don't use a wide-angle lens for CZcams because you get Pierre spider arms. 😁

      Pierre T. Lambert Pierre T. Lambert it is at 8:09 the not moving is sometimes not that easy though :) depending on the shutter speed. But if u set it on 10 seconds it just never gets perfect. Thanks for answering me so fast!!

    Don't give advice about portraits.. Is obviously not your thing. And using wide angle for specific styles of portraits is actually fantastic to add dynamism and drama.

    Platon does portraits with a wide angle... how stupid of him.
