  • Thanks to Thomas Hensley for messaging me on instagram letting me know what was going on out here. Recently the Rockingham Speedway has been making a bit of a comeback through motorsports 4 the masses organized track day events. Most of the facility is still in its untouched abandoned condition including the victory lane with faded paint from the very last Nextel Cup race there in 2004 when Matt Kenseth won. Untouched history paired with classic nascar machines making all the right sounds and smells. I am excited to be a part of this. NASCAR history is just the coolest thing ever and I hope you think so to after watching stuff like this.

: I wasn't a TV race broadcast guy; so it's doubtful you've heard of me (I'm not the least bit famous)...My name is "Mike Paz". I was a member of the track PA announcing staff--I also did the same job for Watkins Glen (my "home track"), Nazareth, Richmond, Phoenix, and Auto Club (the former "California") Speedway, the inaugural race at Kansas Speedway in 2001--AND at Daytona for 10 years straight (1999-2009). Also, a couple of sports car circuits. It all ended due to a severe stroke in March of '09. Before that, I did the same thing for NHRA as a member of their traveling National Event staff at many tracks around the country. I had a blast doing this stuff!!! (still do some local track stuff in the Western NY area)...The resulting physical limitations and possible legal implications hinder the bigger opportunities!

When he said “they’re in people’s front yards”, that brought back memories. I worked for an ARCA team owner/driver that had a promotions company. We took race cars everywhere and while I was shuttling cars around I found myself in a situation that required dropping off a Stirling Marlin Coors Light car in front yard for a couple days so I could pick up a Gordon car. The garage area and some of the infield was refurbished when Penske owned it. The plumbing for the entire place is still from 1965 when the track was built. It is said it'd take over a million bucks to renovate it. They just recently tore down the infield cafe where the drivers would eat before the driver's meeting. My wife used to work the chow line there in the early 80's in her late teens. Earnhardt Sr. said something out of the way as he was getting some food and she tossed a big stainless steel serving spoon full of mashed potatoes on him. She said it got real quiet until Earnhardt started laughing and the whole place busted up. I hope you met Jamie while you were there. I am 77 years old and have been involved in Kart racing since I was 15 years old. I love all forms of racing.
I retired from racing Karts around 2002, but I introduced my son and grandson to Kart racing as soon as they were old enough to compete.
The tracks we raced on were Rockingham, Charlotte, Daytona, Talladega, Pocono, Road America, Loudon, VIR, Road Atlanta, and Summit Point.
My two favorite tracks to compete on are Rockingham and Charlotte. My son finished third at Daytona in the unlimited class in Dec. of 2008.
He was clocked at 156 MPH during his race on the Daytona front straight, and the top ten in his class were averaging over 100 MPH.

I used to love going to Rockingham back in the day, it was one of my favorite tracks to watch a race in person at. I had connections that allowed me full access to the pits/garage area during the races which was awesome. I remember almost getting run over by Ted Musgrave in the 55 car when he came in hot to the hot pit area on the back stretch so the crew could work on the car during one of the races, so much fun! I remember Mark Martin blowing a tire going into the second turn and hitting the wall hard enough to tangle the gear shift lever in the steering wheel. I loved those days in NASCAR but it started going downhill in 1997 in my opinion when NASCAR tried to go Hollywood. I don't watch it anymore and only watch dirt track racing now.

Yes try it out! I see ls people do the cylinder swap with the firing order. I have seen it done for more horsepower but no one ever dose a sound or throttle response test.

Here in Myrtle Beach, SC our local Myrtle Beach Speedway closed down. So all of our local drifters who went to the drift events there were lost. Now they’re doing (quite successful) drift events there at rockingham! Oct. 28th they’re bringing the “Halloween havoc” tradition there with a day full of drifting and live music. Glad to see rockingham coming back to life!

Years ago our local Matco dealer had it set up where we could buy laps to drive or ride some of the dummy cars for a “nascar experience”, i bought myself 10 driving laps and my parents 5 ride along laps. The cars all had the same drivetrain just different bodies, i was lucky enough to get the car with the rear diff that could be heard from the outside parking lot when we got there. Still was a blast to drive a vehicle that resembled a cup car, all the shaking rattling and banging noises i can still hear it at night lol..

Man, I wish someone had brought an old Thunderbird! A lot of my favorite drivers of all time drove a Thunderbird at least once (Bill Elliott, Rusty Wallace, Mark Martin, Alan Kulwicki come to mind) but I'm too young to have seen the NASCAR Thunderbirds back when they were running. I actually used to own a 1995 V8 Thunderbird too so I've got that extra attachment.

I found your channel a few days ago and I can't stop watching your Nascar videos. The first video I ever watched was the Mark Martin dealership interview and then eventually the 2nd video where he took you around town to see his old shops. What a great guy Mark is...just like he seemed in any of his interviews he did at the racetrack. Love the "Rock" video where it was abandoned but being rehabed with that track worker and then watching this video you uploaded on Oct. 3rd with cars racing/practicing at "The Rock". Great Newell videos and the history behind the coaches driven by famous drivers. You, in my opinion, are the best I've seen documenting ANYTHNG Nascar. I do believe I will hit the subscribe button now. As a LONG time Nascar fan here I really appreciate what you do by showing us the in's and out's of Nascar the best you can with information and footage we don't normally see. What I'm saying to sums up very easily - thank you.

I'd wished they'd put lights at Rockingham and I feel bummed that the CARS Late Model Tour is not coming to town this Calendar 2021. I'd like to see conceptually, a la Steve Torrence's Swamp Rat Tribute, the Midnight MGD Pontiac Grand Prix with the Early 1990's Paint w/ a 1996 Wide Track Body or Chuck Bown's Nescafe Pontiac with the same car or even make a Pontiac Paint with a Camaro Body and Rebadge it as a Firebird. I'd get a kick out of a Real Life Concept Series in the future.

I was born in 89 and always remember rusty Wallace chopper fly7ng in at midland when i raced go carts. As kids it was so fun. I was born and raised in Charlotte and Harrisburg. Now I clean pools for a living and have some Nascar clients.
