  • Here are the steps to plant a plantain sucker:
    1. Identify a healthy, mature plantain plant that has produced new plantain suckers (also called pups or offshoots) around the base of the main plant. Choose a sucker that is at least 12-18 inches tall.
    2. Carefully dig around the base of the plantain sucker, making sure to get as much of the root system as possible. Avoid damaging the roots.
    3. Gently separate the sucker from the main plant, trying to get a good portion of the roots. You can use a sharp, clean knife or spade if needed.
    4. Prepare the planting hole. Dig a hole that is slightly larger than the root ball of the sucker. Amend the soil with compost or well-rotted manure to improve drainage and nutrient content.
    5. Place the plantain sucker in the hole, making sure it is positioned at the same depth it was growing at previously. Spread the roots out evenly in the hole.
    6. Backfill the hole with the amended soil, packing it gently around the base of the sucker to remove any air pockets.
    7. Water the new plantain sucker thoroughly after planting. Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged, for the first few weeks as the plant becomes established.
    8. Protect the young plantain sucker from direct sunlight for the first few days after transplanting. Gradually expose it to more sun over the course of a week.
    9. Fertilize the plantain regularly with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to promote growth and fruit production.
With proper planting and care, the plantain sucker should become established and begin producing its own fruit within 6-12 months.
