  • Desuckering and good management practices are indispensable for higher yields of bananas.
    Did you know that once a sword sucker develops in size to around 18 inches you cannot tell the difference between a water sucker and a sward sucker.
    Questions I get:
    Is it possible to grow water suckers and have them grow sword sucker pups?
    Yes, and they will fruit and make sword suckers as well.
    People often have concerns over water suckers? There is a big misconception about them due to information coming from the industrial production side of things which really doesn't apply to anyone else, especially home hobby growers.
    Water suckers typically have smaller corms when young, so they can be slower to establish than a sword sucker, but grow up to be big cowboys lol.
    However, if you put them into nursery pots and let them get established, they will grow the same. Whether they are sword suckers or water suckers, if they are from the same plant they are genetically identical and although there might be some differences in growth when they are young, they all grow up to be the same mature adult plants.
    Keep in mind that whether or not a sucker is a sword sucker or water sucker, they are genetically identical and one is not going to be overall better than another. Some studies have found differences in the first fruit bunch, and some have found none, I think it really depends on the environment, as do most results of this sort, but again, after the first generation, it doesn't matter how they were propagated.
    Just be happen that your able to grow Bananas and enjoy them.
    I hope this video helps, if you have any questions let me know. Thanks.

    Homestead FL. So if water & Sword, btw the w in sword is silent, suckers produce fruit who cares what they are called. I bought my house abt 35 years ago and it came with some citrus and bananas. I've got a feeling that younger b plants just have a narrower leaf, that's all.
    Oh and I liked your video, thumbs up !
    Oh again. I just wanted to say something. After dividing the sucker from the parent I found that leaving it in someblace inside, like your washroom for a few days will help the cut scab over a little bit and then it's less likely from rotting. The old lady that I bought the house from had a hose from the washing machine to the banana patch

    • @TheFrugalHugelGardener
      @TheFrugalHugelGardener  Před rokem +1

    So what does a water sucker look like?

  • @bossdog1480

    Question Sir.
    I've been watching your videos and I've started trimming the leaves like you've shown and put them around the banana tree.
    The trouble is the water now runs off these added leaves and doesn't get close to the stem.
    Should I put the cut leave in a circle around the tree instea,d so's to leave a clear patch for watering?

    • @TheFrugalHugelGardener
      @TheFrugalHugelGardener  Před rokem +1

      I just pile them up all around in no particular order. you could leave a clear patch is watering is an issue. I pile much as high as two feet on the base.

    What growing zone are you in? I’m in 9a/10b and it got down to about 30-40 F a few times at night this winter. People told me not to pile mulch because it would get too hot so I’m trying to determine when building up the mulch is beneficial and when it is not. I have blue java and dwarf namwa

    • @TheFrugalHugelGardener
      @TheFrugalHugelGardener  Před rokem +3

      I pile as much as 2-3 feet of mulch yearly on the all. feeds the plants and helps with water evaporation. I have not had any issues at all.

    Ok. So, maybe I missed it but is there any difference in the sword sucker and water sucker besides the leaf shape and size? I thought I heard that the sword sucker will grow faster and produce sooner. The water sucker will produce but it will take longer. Is that true?

    • @TheFrugalHugelGardener
      @TheFrugalHugelGardener  Před rokem +4

      true, sword sucker will grow faster and produce sooner. But I have so many that I do not notice at all, and I am not a commercial grower, so I am happy with all my Banana plants harvest.

  • @epigeneticnerd4244
    @epigeneticnerd4244 Před rokem +2

    Question! When transplanting a banana tree, do you prune the top off? If so how low do you go? I topped mine off since the leaves die out anyway, and it looks like the top is hard and dry, making it difficult for the new leaf to come out.

    • @TheFrugalHugelGardener
      @TheFrugalHugelGardener  Před rokem +2

      when I transplant the smaller ones under three feet, I leave the leaves on. For the larger ones, I trim the leaves because of the wind. you can trim the leave or cut the trunk at any height. you will see new growth in a few days.

    So what, really, is the difference between them, growing, fruiting, producing? Are you saying to get rid of the water suckers and keep the sword suckers and if so, why?

    • @TheFrugalHugelGardener
      @TheFrugalHugelGardener  Před 10 měsíci

      just the water sucker has a wide leaf and the sward sucker has a narrow pointy leaf when small. they both fruit, water sucker may take a little longer to fruit. but all fruit are the same.

      let them get a little larger. dig under and around the pups until you see some roots on them, then separate close to the parent plant.

    People use the word pups to describe plants. They are sprouts. They are growing out of the rootzone. Pups are baby dogs.

      In Hawaii they're called "keiki" or kids. Because it's a mother tree, that puts out babies. It's just banana lingo. Don't get too literal. No one calls them sprouts. And if you wanna get real technical - sprouts are brand new growth from seeds
