WTF Happened to Legend?

  • What is light without darkness? This is what Tim Curry's character of Darkness ponders in the 1985 film Legend. This fairy tale film from visionary director Ridley Scott would start filming in 1984 and even though the movie followed characters through a magical world, it would end up running into some very real problems. Scott was able to snatch up a new young actor named Tom Cruise (ever hear of him?) just before he was about to become one of the biggest stars in the world and pit him against a well-respected actor known for taking chances in the parts he chose to play. Little did Scott know that making the film was only the first dragon he would have to slay. Getting it released was going to be even harder. Let's find out how Legend became a fairy tale warning of making films in the studio system here on WTF Happened To This Movie?

So many amazingly beautiful scenes could be posters or pictures. Lily and Una running through the great hall, the unicorn lying dormant in the snow, Darkness leaning over Lily. And Tangerine Dream ... ok, we may have our preferences on movie scores, but the synths sound felt mystical, magical, truly fairly tail. I tried tried tried to get into it with the symphony score. It felt forced, routine, ... like a standard. I've seen this movie so many times, I recite the lines when watching ... "Mother Night, fold your dark arms about me", "Quiet. How like you my gifts my lady. Does the gown not please you?", "What have we here? A little BOY?". Great great stuff.

"Black as midnight, black as pitch. Blacker than the foulest witch!" It was a privilege to have been right on the verge of adolescence when I saw this film. Fantasy films like "The Dark Crystal" and "Legend" showed a grittier, darker side to the old-school Disney fairytales many of us grew up with. Gen X kids might have already discovered the glory of Tim Curry thanks to his time as Frankenfurter, but he absolutely owned every moment of screentime as Darkness. He even brought a serious sex appeal to the figure of the demon. He was scary as hell, literally, but also kind of tragic and romantic. I don't think I was the only adolescent girl imagining what it would have been like to dance around in the goth bride get-up that Lily ended up in. It's also dang easy to forget that THE Tom Cruise plays a role in this film. This film is a classic! I'd consider it a must-watch for anyone who appreciates twisted takes on fairytales.

Thank you for this. I took my girlfriend to see this when I was 15. It was one of the first adult dates I went on. I loved it as I understood it was paying homage to many European legends and fairytales which play a large role in literature from Shakespeare to Lord of the Rings. Ridley understood how this is part of what Europeans are and is deeply routed in our cultures and not just throwaway childhood tales.
I mean that Ridley understood this more than Disney fairytale which stripped out the darkness and fear of spirits and witchcraft and so forth that were very real things in our histories.

As well as, the soundtrack was so damn good with Tangerine Dream (perfect music for the 80's) I remember buying the cassette and wearing it out. Especially the dance.
I saw the movie with the original soundtrack. And I don't mind orchestrated music. I really don't. Yet, I tried with all my might and just couldn't let go of the fantasy sounds of Tangerine Dream. ESPECIALLY DURING THE DANCE! lol
Still, I'd like to at least see the Director's Cut. I can be fair. And am very curious to learn more about the characters and who they really were.
Thanks for putting this together. It was really fun. Most the things I already knew. And some were brand new. Good job!!!

I first saw this film on TV in the late 80’s early 90’s with family. It always stalled with me and became one of my favorites. AND this was the American cut mind you! Fast forward to 2003 or so when it was released as a Director’s Cut on DVD with the original beautiful poster art. Man, was my mind blown. Especially with the inclusion of the Goldsmith score. It still captured the same feeling I got from when I first saw it, but with a new tone.
In my mind Legend is still one the best fantasy, fairy tale films ever made and from that era.

I'll have to watch it again. I was absolutely captivated in the theater watching this as a kid, and the amount of atmosphere it has is truly amazing.
There were several powerful fantasy films that came out in the 80s, and this ranks among the best.

I wasn’t expecting such a positive review. I know it’s been much reviled. I have good memories of watching it on TV in 1989, dubbed in Portuguese. I still gotta see the director’s cut with the original voices.

To this day, my favorite Tom Cruise movie. So much creativity and imagination... as a kid it really showed me that there is good and there is evil in the world.... and that you MUST take a side. If you don't, your just as bad as evil.
If you go deeper though, as an adult, it shows me that that darkness and light are not two sides of a coin, they are just the coin. There are no sides and that we all return to the source at the end.

I must've watched the opening of the theatrical cut countless of times mainly because of Tangerine Dream's soundtrack. To me, the director's cut with Jerry Goldsmith's score doesn't quite gel with me.

I've seen so many versions of this film. I remember there was one cut, TBS I think, that the opening scene script was narrated. There was also a part where Gump asked Jack a riddle, about blue bells, and Jack had to answer right or they wouldn't help him. That's not in there either. I wish they would put out that TBS cut because it was really good.
