I had the great pleasure of seeing Sam Ramey twice at the Lyric Opera in Chicago.....first as Mefistofeles in Gounod's Faust and again as Scarpia in Tosca. What a great, great voice!

@@Samuel6969ify lasci fare la presunzione. Già mettere a paragone grandissimi esecutori come quelli citati dal "sapientissimo" GB è un oltraggio ai medesimi. Poi mettere in discussione Ramey, peraltro relegandolo a Rossini quando il suo straordinario range gli ha permesso di affrontare brillantemente tutti i ruoli più importanti di questa tonalità, è davvero una bestemmia. Chapeau dinanzi ai citati Pinza, Christoff, Neri (soprattutto, fenomenale), ma Samuel, con Ghiaurov, è il più grande almeno dagli anni 80 in poi
Mi fanno ridere quelli che dicono che quest'aria è da basso - basso o da basso profondo. Si vede che non sanno cosa sia cantarla. Chi ci ha provato (con pessimi risultati, come chi commenta...) può garantire che un conto è l'aria da basso verdiana, un conto è quella belcantista, come quella donizettiana. Quest'aria necessità di un'agilità che difficilmente un basso puro (sempre che ne esistano...forse i russi) riesce a garantire. La cabaletta, in particolare, è sfiancante e con tessitura "alta" che un Ramey - capace di note profonde come di acuti strepitosi - affronta al meglio. Il resto sono chiacchiere da presunti melomani e leoni da tastiera
I think a lot of the problem rises from the fact that so many people think all basses are of the profundi variety and have never heard of and have certainly never actually heard a basso cantante like Ramey.
Impressive ! My favourite version however is the one by José van Dam (live Paris - 1972 with Vasso Papantoniou and Carerras) : more ominous and without superfluous ornamentations in the cabaletta.
@bassfanne45 I usually don't like tenors (at least no lyric tenors) they tend to sound wimpy and 2 dimensional. basses and bari's sound elegant and rich. there are a number of exeptions tho (Vinay, Corelli, Giacomini etc), but as a whole, I'm glad I'm a baritone. as far as females go I have a (slight) preference to sopranos, particularly heroic, pure sounding sopranos like sutherland. sometimes tho, I crave the smooth, dark, sexy timbre of a mezzo soprano =)
Immagino cosa sarebbe stato questo pezzo cantato da Ezio Pinza... un cosa inarrivabile... sempre tenendo presente che questo è un pezzo da basso e non da basso baritono...
Bravo, tecnicamente ferrato, ma questo pezzo é per un basso più profondo, lui ha un peso specifico insufficiente. Comunque assolutamente godibile anche se a volte l'intenzione di rendere più corposo il volume vocale schiaccia l'emissione fino ad vago muggito... Già nell'attacco il "Vieni... " è aperto e plateale... il Duca medita vendetta e canta con piglio irato, non deve mostrare iperboli vocali... Donizetti non é Verdi e neppure Rossini....
egregio GB, ma lei sa cosa significa cantare questo brano? E' certo di affermare che è "per un basso più profondo"? Il volume vocale schiaccia l'emissione fino ad un vago muggito...ma ci rendiamo conto? Blasfemia pura. Leoni da tastiera/loggione, null'altro

Ramey, with exquisite breath control excels in this lovely cabaletta by Donizetti. Bel canto at its finest.

Much better than the overrated Wixell.
Wixell has also seemed to me an odd choice for this role. Aside from the studio recording, I don't think he ever sang this role on stage ANYWHERE.
Superb voice; maybe a tempo a bit slow in the first part; I think one could prefer this part of the aria, sung on a more lively way.

Gran bella voce, ma per me è preferibile un basso più profondo. Pur essendo Ramey un gran bel basso. Bravo davvero.
