Alla Ossipova: Ulrica, Verdi "Un Ballo in Maschera"
Alla Ossipova (Telegina) was born in the Arctic, in Norilsk, but spent most of her life in Moscow. Starting from childhood Alla was different -- she was dreaming about becoming an autopsist and hated school for trying to make her conform to some standards.
Alla graduated from Moscow State University as a journalist, but didn't work as such. At the University she started singing, first as a soprano, then she went to study with Natalia Pinevich who discovered her true voice -- dramatic mezzo.
Alla graduated from Moscow University of Arts and then immigrated to Canada together with her husband. Her talent continued to grow with the help of vocal teacher Inna Golsband and Alla started singing on Toronto opera stages -- first at Summer Opera Lyric Theatre, then Opera by Request and Toronto Operetta Theatre.
The combination of big, heavy, dark dramatic contralto with the range of 3 octaves and her fiery temperament was the base on which the talent of Alla Ossipova blossomed. Her last role was Fricka in Die Walküre (Wagner).
Alla's life tragically came to an end on December 25th, 2012 when she just turned 38. Alla couldn't make all her dreams come true, but she will always stay in our hearts.
Studio recording, August 22, 2011
Toronto Operetta Theatre.

For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first. (KJV) 🎺 🕊 🙏🏽

I can't say enough about Samuel Ramey. He is this magnificent macho mensch.(Oh, and he sings good too.)
Samuel Ramey is Superb! Interestingly this is done a step lower then when I did it in 1988. Also our Stage Director set it in 18th/19th Century Spanish Southwest America . . . think Zorro :)
Amazing voice, remarkable performance! I have never heard this aria performed in such a mesmerizing way. Thank you so much for sharing this, my new favorite. Samuel Ramey is such a talent!
Samuel Ramey is 8 of Clubs ♣♣♣♣♣♣♣♣Happy Birthday to Samuel Ramey REST IN POWER Blessings and HUGS 👑💜
Maravillosa interpretación!!!!
The greatest singer gives us the greatest Beethoven in history. This is like a support of the LORD.
I had the opportunity to see and hear Samuel in person when he gave a recital benefiting the opera company in my city. A tremendous once in a life time opportunity to be certain 👍🙂
Peccato però perché era secondo me divertente nel ruolo comico. 😂
Excellent diction!! Beautiful rendition and voice!!
Samuel Ramey is a bass! He does an exceptionally and excellent job!! His breath control is superb, diction flawless and intonation breathtaking!!
He's indeed a great bass.
Handel is eternally inspiring, mocked and a leader of God's word through music. Amen
There's a reason why just a few can actually sing this piece. Admirable!!
Extraordinario ¡¡!!! que stacatos.
Bravissimo (e noiosissimo).
veramente noioso!!!!
Mah!!!
Thanks so much for posting this! The audience, sounds like every one of them, knew they had just experienced something very special and important in the world of opera singers. Of course we all know the kind of career Ramey would rightfully enjoy, but to hear an aria known as playful turned into a masterpiece…This was, is, a moment still resonating decades later.
I know someone who heard Ramey in this role in Los Angeles back at the very beginning of Ramey's career. My acquaintance said that this tall, skinny guy walked out on stage and started singing, and everyone just sat there with their mouths open, absolutely stunned by the extraordinary and beautiful voice that they were hearing.

ECCO CHE COSA SIGNIFICA ENTRARE NELLO SPIRITO DELL'OPERA !
che cosa significa?
FANTASTISCH
Ramey stupendo
Best rendition I have ever heard.
While, yes, Ramey is magnificent, you never heard Siepi. Why choose? I saw them both live many times in this role, yet never compared them, but reveled in their uniqueness.
@@snoopenny how did their voices sound in the hall?

Magnificent! Ramey the greatest!

What's Samuel Ramey doing these days? I think he's still performing somewhere or other.
According to this news, he moved to Kansas where he's coaching singers: www.kansas.com/entertainment/arts-culture/article251575143.html
English translation Calumny is a little breeze, a gentle zephyr, which insensibly, subtly, lightly and sweetly, commences to whisper. Softly softly, here and there, sottovoce, sibilant, it goes gliding, it goes rambling. Into the ears of the people, it penetrates slyly and the head and the brains it stuns and it swells. From the mouth re-emerging the noise grows crescendo, gathers force little by little, runs its course from place to place, seems the thunder of the tempest which from the depths of the forest comes whistling, muttering, freezing everyone in horror. Finally with crack and crash, it spreads afield, its force redoubled, and produces an explosion like the outburst of a cannon, an earthquake, a whirlwind, a general uproar, which makes the air resound. And the poor slandered wretch, vilified, trampled down, sunk beneath the public lash, by good fortune, falls to death.
I love this entire version of Il barbiere di Siviglia; especially this aria, with Samuel Ramey as Don Basilio ❤️
Fantástico!
Wow! 👏
O Freunde, nicht diese Töne! Sondern laßt uns angenehmere anstimmen, Und freudenvollere. Bravo bravo bravo brilliance fantastic grandiose vocal super
Superba!
Grazie mille!
Stimmlich einfach phänomenal !!! Interpretatorisch klingt leider nicht nach Freude
Das liegt an Beethoven, oder?
I think the aria suits a bass rather than a baritone. Splendid as Mr R is in this bruvura aria his timbre seems a tad too light to convey the 'bite' the piece requires...
Ramey is a bass.....
@@charlesm.5476 THAT'S a much more civilised response. Thank you. My mistake. (In the official blurb about him , strictly speaking he's a bass-baritone.)
@@DavidHughes-op6zl Strictly speaking he is a basso cantante. Whatever Wikipedia says, Ramey himself has always referred to himself as a bass, as did his management. The ability to do bass baritone roles simply speaks to his versatility. The only bass-baritone I know of to sing King Philip in Don Carlos was Jose Van Dam, and it was admittedly too low for him.
Oh my goodness, the flack I've variously attracted for making a simple mistake about Ranmey's voice range. Astounding. I must surely stand trial in the highest court of Snootydom.
