Vladimir Navokov has said in interviews that he doesn't consider Lolita to be a love story but the furthest thing from it. It is a phicological horror book where you are forced to see the world through the perspective of a pedophile. The fact that it is beautifully written just adds to the discomfort, as the reader tries to grapple with the fact that they are somewhat enjoying this disgusting story beacause of how poetically it is written
i understand if you didn't like it, it is a very hard book to read, but i hope the misinterpretations and romanticization of the book promoted on the internet didn't compleately shape your opinion :)
He also did not at all want a girl on the cover, the original one was just straight up green without anything on it and now almost every edition has a cover with a girl on it which is so maddening to me

3:20 Nabokov is one of those writers whose style isn’t necessarily complicated but the theory behind is very complex. He never intended to be a moralist with any of his novels, he famously said “I’m no messenger boy” which explains why he gives Humbert wide range to express his sick infatuation. Lolita has been read in the light of a “romance” but I think that Nabokov used the theme of a depraved love to mock and warn how toxic and perverse the idea of romantic love can really be.

Because that anime changed my life, supported me through a very hard time, and also made me fall in love with anime in general.
I am 99% sure that I know what scene you are talking about when flipping through volume 3, AND LET ME TELL YOU, THAT scene was the point where I stopped just watching One Piece and completely, absolutely, unapologetically fell in love with it.
It is sooooo good that you started it, I am impressed at how quick you are going through it (it took me 2 years to catch up with it, and back then the episodes were still in the 8/9 hundreds).
You are going to sob so hard, but it is worth it.
I love your content and thank you for this amazing space where I can always feel comforted and just happy to hear you talking about things I also love (books and anime).

I read Lolita as a deeply immersive character study. It's unrelenting and upsetting, but the fact that it never lets up really forces you into this character's head. Which is not at all a fun place to be. The romanticization, I think, is the point. The character really sees himself as some kind of noble victim who's been enthralled into his perverse desires and his attempts to elevate them are really just his desperate fumblings to paint himself as anything but the pathetic, sad, immoral criminal that he really is.
Succession is a masterpiece!! Easily one of the best shows ever. THAT episode in the final season is one of the best episodes in tv history!!!

Your videos are always a fun time. I like watching people update their planers/ notions. When I got into Attack on Titan the manga had just finished and I was too impatient to wait for the anime so I binge read the whole manga. Hopefully your reads keep getting better. 😊
I find it fascinating that latin america countries and spain sing lullaby to their children and britain read children bed time stories because in my country we just lost ourselves in our thoughts to sleep😅 and my love mix up is so funny and heart warming, plus theres a live action drama!!

I'm currently re-reading A room of one's own !! For a bookclub, I'm taking so many notes, my Lettres Modernes brain really got activated by just the first sentence.
My love mix-up is indeed PERFECT for fans of Heartstopper. I also recommend They hate each other by Amanda Woody, which gave me the same kind of vibe : cute and funny and awesome friend group and awesome romance but also important stuff talked about and a focus on mental health. I read it in one day and loved it.

For the show recommendation, I will actually go with an actual play : Fantasy High, from Dimension 20. It's a bunch of comedians playing dungeon and dragons with a 70's (? or 80's ? who knows, not me) suburbs high school in the States. It's funny, awesome, incredible, and a great introduction to dnd (one of my strongest hyperfixation) (for my latest hyperfixation, that would be Stray Kids)

I could literally watch you talking about One Piece for 2 to 3 hours, cuz Bella you and One piece are the only ones that I love now. I'll recommend the live action of My love mix-up which the name is "kieta hatsukoi" it's really cute and wholesome show with just 12 episodes I think.

On Lolita. I remember I read it when I was a teenager. And it was sick to read but to this day it is still one of my favourite books. Nabokov makes you see things from a pedophile’s perspective where Humbert justifies everything he is doing and almost makes Lolita a perverted character and not himself which was just fascinating to read,oh and the writing was beautiful. So even though Nabokov is not stating on every page how wrong this is you just know you are reading from a perspective of a very sick person and see things how he views them and that they are indeed wrong wrong things. I hope that made sense)

I haven't watched Succession but Mad Men is one of my absolutely favourite shows ever and from what I'm hearing, these two are pretty similar.
I watched a couple of episodes of mad men!! It’s different because the focus is different but the characters definitely have similarities between them 🫣
fun fact: i minor in media studies and in one of our lectures, it was mentioned that Succession was a show that was developed intentionally to be “binged”. Meaning that the way each episode and season ends is planned in a way to make to viewer NEED more. Looks like they succeeded very well in that idea 😂
