#DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term "death" in the context of the show as either... 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn't do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.
Rules:
1: No discrimination or hate speech.
2: No affiliation links that do not belong to nerdSlayer.
3: No political/religious talk or debate .
4: Any points you make have to be substantiated either in explaining your opinion or when stating facts you need to back these up with reliable sources.
5: Do not argue moderation decisions in public, if you have an issue PM the mods.
6: We don't allow self promotion, giveaways or anything of similar nature from community members on this discord without nerdSlayer's permission.
7: Wherever possible if you initiate a discussion try to do so in an appropriate channel for it. For example game news could go in game-table a story on the latest EVE heist however would belong in mmo-booth or the latest GPU shortage can go in tech-wizards

Will you ever cover plants vs zombies battle for neighborville
Can you make a death of a game for Final Fantasy 14 online?
Please stop saying CP.. :D You might use it in the context of club penguin, But a lot of people will have a Knee-jerk reaction to the word for something else entirely
Disney shutting down all their iconic mmos always makes me sad
It sucks, but at the end of the day, they’re all businesses. The companies do need them to be monetarily successful to run.
Granted some pure game companies will stick with their MMO’s through the tough times to keep em alive.
"Iconic" haha
It's not just sad, it's a bit dumb. Basically, "Why kill the golden goose?"/"Why fix what isn't broken?"
@@XartiXVSeems to be a recurring habit for them *_looks at Star Wars_*
I miss toontown and pixie hollow
Maybe I spent too much time on 4Chan as a teenager, but I have to say this was a weird, slightly uncomfortable watching experience with "CP" constantly being mentioned. Kinda funny too.
@@gerryw173ify my favourite was the talk of Disney buying CP, or maybe "this was a growing trend in the CP community."
for me it's the contrary, i growed up with club penguin, so everytime i see "CP" first thing that cross my mind is club penguin lmao.

As someone, who didn’t get the reference, i googled it. Immediately regretted it.

"Building CP from the core up is not something which we have seen done-" yeah thank god because CP usually means something else entirely. That caught me off guard.
Yeah CP stands for Cristian Pulisic, the LeBron James of Soccerball
it only means something else because people mislabel one of the worst crimes ever.

I was all aboard the first few expansions, The Freezing Crusade and Wrath of the Lich Peng, but as soon as Mists of Penguaria released, I checked out.
God dame Disney shutting down this classic game for another, worse game, they simply shut down later.
one of the most bizarre fumbles of our time
They also killed ToonTown for after buying this too.
CP Island didn’t even last 2 years that’s how bad it was 💀
Your videos makes hearing about dead games and dreams a delightful experience.
Glad to hear that :)
Dead games and dead dreams... that resonates with me...
@@nerdSlayerstudioss wow the next death of a Game is kinda like abortion. the game was shut down before it was released
Yep, I love hearing about all these populated games that I never even heard of since I only played in a small number of MMORPGs. It's a glimpse into an entirely different world.
Club Penguin will always have a place in my heart, where I'll remember it fondly. RIP
Hopefully you do a video on VMK - Virtual Magic Kingdom, which was Disney's OFFICIAL, direct competition to Club Penguin.
It was literally the exact same game, a flash based social hub with minigames meant for an audience of kids but everything was Disneyland theme'd.
Funnily enough, Disney actually bought Club Penguin 9 months before shutting down VMK in 2007, which screams very obviously that the reason they shut it down was to focus on Club Penguin. Feel like that would be an important piece to the Club Penguin story and why Disney did the things they did with Club Penguin.
I grew up playing this as a kid, it was a nice escape from family drama and was the first place I got to express myself as a girl. I remember collecting a lot of stuff in the game and even collecting the trading card game IRL. Hearing that it was being shut down made me very sad.
This is the first game I truly experienced that you covered here. As a part of the well known "flash generation", who also grew without a console up until 2011, I LOVED that game as a kid, kinda obsessed with it and the cute puffles and the vegetarian polar bear... but I noticed the game started to have a bit of a downfall when stuff that used to be free became paid content, which even my 13 year old me could understand as unfair.
I'm sure after that point I moved to Wii, then 3DS, then the abyss who is LoL and Mobile, then recovered. It's just a great place where people was just ridiculous and the minigames creative. I wouldn't say is MMO game, not RPG in the current meaning, but a Multiplayer Online and OG definition of Role-Play Game, and that made the game unique.
PS: Never heard of Club Penguin Island up until 10 minutes ago, and I was a mobile gamer who grew up with Club Penguin back in 2017.
hey, i had the same experience, fall 2008 - january 2010 played club penguin and flash games on kongregate almost every day, got a console in late 2010 (modded nintendo ds) then a wii in 2012 but i bricked the wii by trying to mod it. unbricked it in 2018-19. Club penguin was good until they shoved the membership in your face. Coming from romania it was way too expensive at the time, and I found accounts on the web. Karma is a bitch cause my account got leaked and hacked too due to using CP Trainer. Yahoo Messenger and Roblox at the time were very nice. Sonic Adeventure DX from a friend's CD etc. I used to have a folder full of cartoon images and wallpapers but I lost it.
Dropped to my knees in the middle of a Walmart parking lot

me listening to this video in public:
Already feeling the nostalgia thanks to the thumbnail alone :”)
This one has been a long time coming. The death of this icon with never be forgotten.
Also in regards to Disney targeting CP reworks feels the same as Cartoon Network targeting FusionFall reworks. If they were in it for the money they would just hire these people on and restart the franchise. They just do it because copyright laws can be total BS sometimes, and they are salty that someone else did a better job then they could.
I’m surprised Disney hasn’t tried to make a CP movie yet. I feel like it’s a no brainer.
Is this really the 100th video in the series?
If so, congratulations 🎉🎉🎉🎉
wow thanks so much
This game raised me better than my biological dad did.
REAL
he'll add my entire biological faimily in there to 😅
To be fair I was given up willingly
I'm really hopeful that Box Critters does well. The same creator behind both, a similar vibe to both, but now Lance Priebe/Rocket Snail has WAY more experience making games and can make Box Critters the best product possible without the Disney "agenda" forcing crossovers into the game every other month and the absolute need to profit constantly. If Box Critters can become the Club Penguin 2 that never was, I'll be very happy. We need to honor Club Penguin's legacy in some way, and with fan run private servers being controversial to say the least, Box Critters may be the best way to do that.
I'm logged in to New Club Penguin as this premiers so I feel like some sort of penguin necromancer
Man, i miss playing card-jitsu games and exploring newly added places on map...
This game was a big part of my life in 2008 - 2010. I loved it. Before it was disconnected, I played it around 2017.
Oh man I played this so much back in the day. It was such a cute little game and I was really sad to hear when it closed. Having a safe online space to socialize is a good experience for kids in the internet age to have imo.
And Neopets is still going! Not strong, but going.
I remember growing up with club penguin, I had left by the time there was the more blatant Disney additions, but I still enjoyed every minute of it.
Also abbreviating Club Penguin as c p made a lot of the sentences sound off, especially if taken out of context... Though all it did was make me laugh :)
watching this and realizing I actually remember playing penguin football chat, and when club penguin originally launched on miniclip. As a kid penguins were my favorite animal, it was so crazy when club penguin came out, it was like they had made a game just for me. Seeing what has become of it really breaks my heart. I swear every year of adulthood another part of my childhood dies.
According to the community manager at the time, the team pitched a new game in the world op CP which got greenlit, only for CPI to shut down 2 months later and the team being fired
Its weird to think that Club Penguin hasnt existed for almost 7 years now. It was a massive part of my childhood, and I do miss it a bit. Some of the other games from my childhood like Skoodle or Skooville have been mostly forgotten, it was a website / game that primary schools would sign you up to in the UK.
The use of "CP" jump scared the shit outta me looool
You have a strong point about how the game stopped innovating. This is especially true in terms of the minigames. Why could Disney not come up with new tracks in Cart Surfer or new areas for the Ice Fish minigame.
Yeah. You can tell how bad it is since before 2011, club penguin was always adding new rooms and minigames to play. After 2011 though, only 4 minigames were added: card jitsu snow (which was in production way back in 2010), smoothie smash, spy drills (basically a replacement to PSA missions) and sound studio (a more modern version of DJ3K). None of these minigames besides card jitsu snow were all that memorable, and snow is only remembered because of the huge build up towards it and the storyline it had. It seems that the team lost the magic of what made the minigames fun, being able to replay them and be simple to understand. It would’ve been nice if they just added new levels or areas to minigames, they did for puffle launch and aqua grabber, why not more? Why not instead of removing minigames? Just revamp them?
I also always wondered why Disney left such huge spaces of the map open, they could’ve added some cool areas instead of removing old stuff and just adding more boring wilderness. I’m sure if they innovated and kept adding new things, people wouldn’t leave that fast. It would’ve been cool seeing the whole map developed rather than just being mostly the exact same after 2011.
Cp was said too many times here's man I felt uncomfortable by the end lmao
stop thinking about child po*n sir
@@MrSoso1050Your pfp says the contrary.

@MrSoso1050 Well, you are gonna keep distorting my words, what is the complete image for this anyways? Also weebs=cp.
@@NumbHydro complete image? you are looking at the entire image, I only drew a head because I needed a pfp lol
I still wait to see you do a video on UruLive, a Myst MMO (Yes, a puzzle MMO) that actually died at least twice before currently continuing on in a fan-run server that is officially endorsed by the developers themselves. AND STILL GETS UPDATED.
Me loving Club Penguin as a kid is probably the reason I'm so attached to this other game called Sky. The game is simple as Club Penguin was, with the feature of customizing your avatar and the main feature of the game being a social MMO. These two share those feats, alongside some kind of big world but that is also built by rooms in some way.
Club Penguin was really important to me in my childhood and seeing how it fell down makes me rather sad.
The number of things that Disney has manged to milk dry and than abandon are frightening and fascinating at the same time.
I beg you all to not abreviate Clup Penguin.
playing this game as my parents screamed at each other before their divorce was peak childhood
Hyena's already? that has got to the fastest death of any game i've seen.
Love putting your content on at work. Perfect for tedious work, with a story of famous or infamous games.
The amount of times I got banned from this game as a child, LOL.
If the Death of a Game video makes me sad. Then it really proves how much that game means to me :(
you calling Club Penguin "CP" makes me uncomfortable
You need to rinse your brain if thats what you think about

Club Penguin has a very unfortunate acronym especially for a childs game.
I’ve always wondered what killed this. Never knew

Shout out to the time I was actually able to get one of those "free item generators" to work and hacked a Red Lei for my penguin. Good old days.
Every time you acronymed Club Penguin it made me laugh XD
Having said that youtube's bots might take that for another word w/o context
You might wanna reupload after changing that for peace of mind juuuuust incase
I was a very little kid when this game was popular and i didnt quite speak english back then. I remember i couldnt do like anything in the game, i managed to try 2 really bad minigames in a few hours. Then i went back to play a good and intuitive pc game like half life or counter strike.😂
I've heard you talk about this title a lot over the years so it's cool to see it reviewed. I missed this one for some reason as a kid.
This one's gonna hurt. Waddle on, fellas.
Excellent video on a nostalgic title from many childhoods. I’ll always be thankful for the memories the game provided me.
They're fighting Herbert in heaven my little pengwads
Wild hearing "The Magic of CP" 💀
This and Gaia were my favorite online games when I was younger
Oh no, i wasnt ready to see this, the memories man, the friends i made in that game, now its gone 😭
Im 18 and I fr miss this game, even now I would play it when I don't have stuff to do, kinda sad that rewritten got shut down because it was the only good "copy"
I don't know why I'm on such a Club Penguin kick lately, I've never even played it (I was a Toontown kid) but all these videos that have been coming out about it lately are just so fascinating to me.
24 minutes of life for me to relive. Amazing video essay.
My friends and i bonded by watching CP videos on utube back in the day.

Hui, is the next case "Hyenas"? The game from Sega and Creative Assembly that got scrapped before it even fully released?
ding ding ding
@@nerdSlayerstudioss Oh, I wanted it to be fortnite
@@nerdSlayerstudioss Might wanna be careful about what footage you include. As I said yesterday, CA tried to strike Volund for that "mood video" by Neill Blomcamp. They are currently on a scorched earth mission. If it is true that their marketing dept mostly told Sega what they wanted to hear, I can only imagine how personal Sega does take it. And they will have a spokesperson at CA. And that somebody is currently fighting for dear life. Which can easily make you collateral damage. This is very, very raw for management at CA. The meltdown is becoming more and more public with each fired person. Edit: Finding somebody formerly inside should be no trouble at all. They seem to speak to LegendOfTotalwar and Volund the most. It is not pretty.
No developer has tried to come at me in such a way but if they would like to I would openly welcome such hostilities. It's horrible publicity for them. Because my job is to preserve games and their significance that's it.
@@nerdSlayerstudioss I remember CA going after a bunch of Warhammer creators, too. They can be very vicious if they want to.
Fantastic video! But using the acronym "cp" probably wasn't the best choice 😂😅👶
Used to play club penguin and do ninja challenges for the badges and outfits, good times.
No matter the genre or media, there's one formula to rule them all;

I really enjoyed the heck out of Club Penguin but I noticed they eventually locked more and more content behind membership even old minigames like the jetpack one.
I clearly remembered I was able to play that from start to finish but when I came to to play it again sometime later, they locked the rest of the levels.
As a kid back then, my parents do not really trust purchasing membership online. So I was stuck waddling around and slowly losing more stuff to do and eventually moved on to Runescape.
I feel like you said "turn of the century" to describe 2000 to make me feel old >.>
the intro animation is everything
The studio behind Club Penguin was local to me. I know some people who got paid the big cash money when Disney bought them out.
damn this was such a throwback. thanks for the video and great nuance when talking on the private servers !!
I LOVE CLUB PENGUIN! Club Penguin will live on forever and ever, it will never die, in 50 years there will still be club penguin and even if there's no internet by then for some reason, we will group up and play club penguin as a tabletop.
Internet has ruined me. Was laughing the whole video
Just call it Club Penguin 😂
I remember playing this mmo game back in the day, me and my younger brother would usually asked my mom to create accounts for us, (because i didn't have my own google account at the time) we only have 7 days to wadding around the game.
Until that last weekend. It was the last day of this game, i remember seeing ton of videos of bunch players gathering saying farewell to each other. After the shutdown of club penguin, i created my own google account. To this day i still have the permission slip of my club penguin account in my email.
I spent most of my early childhood on clup penguin. I rember those days trying to uncover hidden rooms on the map, or even try to tip that Ice burg. Unfortunately i left club penguin some time around when the dinosaur event ended and before the star wars event started. I never got the chance to log on one more time to see them finally tip the iceberg and see the send off. In fact i did not know it was shutdown till 2020
i cracked every time you said "cp" lol
I would love to the death of a game: Pirates of the Caribbean Online
Where were you when club penguin is kill? :(
When I played Club Penguin as a kid, I think I had a blatant misunderstanding as to what the game was. I NEVER used any of the social aspects. I just played the mini-games a lot and took care of puffles. I also played the Wii game. And to me, that felt pretty similar to how I played the PC game. But since I never used the social aspect for the PC game, I quit after about a year or year and a half. I'm surprised pre-teen me spent so long in Club Penguin without doing anything social.
Man I miss Club Penguin. The first online game I actually was invested in.
Man this was such a nostalgia bomb. WADDLE ON!
the game is still up, a group of peeps revived it and is slowly bringing all content back
Rip. This game made my childhood awesome it's been 15 year,i missed the game alot🥹
The most weird thing that was never brought up was that another company that was in talks about buying club penguin before Disney was Sony, I wonder what the timeline where Sony bought club penguin instead of Disney would have looked like.
Just found this video. Overall a very good and informative video on one of the biggest MMOs of all time. The game meant a whole lot to me and I have even visited the Studio back in 2017. Great video and I look forward to watching more of your videos on other video games.
I miss Club Penguin so much…..
As much as I'd hate to admit it, but that reference to The Far Side took me back, as I never played this game. Old and all
I think a Whirled episode could make for a decent short watch. It was a flash based social chat room like CP, but everyone could upload their own avatars made with flash.
12:56 They never actually implemented the shard based approach (CPNext) on the original Club Penguin, it kept using the original servers to the end. Apparently this was used on the app though.
When "CP" makes things awkward out of context
Always preferred Puffin Party, great way to chill out after a day riding on Rubber Dinghy Rapids at Alton Towers
The madlad did it.
Love your vids! Would be cool to see your take on habbo hotel. I remember CP and HH were the two big social games when I was a kid.
Is it possible for you to make a video about Growtopia? it used to be a beloved childhood MMO i grew up with, but nowadays it's become a shell of its former self. There are many sources you can look into, that can help with investigating the death of Growtopia too! I've yet to see a big channel speak about the game.
I remember playing so much of the ninja card game thing as a kid. Good times such a nostalgia trip.
The amount of time i played with the OG CP as a kid, is making me laugh.
But i will hold into those memories as long as i can. RIP
The only browser game that I can think of that survived is Animal Jam with National Geographic I think it’s due to its trading system and rarity of items which keeps it going and many players keeping on long term memberships through multiple accounts for storage and etc.
I could be watching Lions game rn but here I am. That’s dedication.
