    • @CreativityNull

      And it has been for a long time. Information on laptops like whether or not you can upgrade storage or RAM or how good it is thermally just isn't as readily available, especially on the more budget friendly models.
      At least with a desktop you can swap individual parts (within reason) but with a laptop if one thing is bad the whole thing is bad. However you get to have a really compact form.

    • @oddball_the_blue
      @oddball_the_blue Před rokem +6

      Asus have had one that can turn the track pad into a screen, calculator and more besides for years now. It's not that new an idea.

    • @Physicus9
      @Physicus9 Před rokem +9

      Having full number pads is absolutely necessary for so many things. I don't know why so many manufacturers are getting rid of them on 15" and 16" laptops

    • @necrojoe
      @necrojoe Před rokem +7

      @@Physicus9 i don't know if this is actually the case, but screens used to have wider bezels. Without that extra width real estate for the chassis, a modern 15" is smaller than a 15" from a few years ago, so the keyboard may need to shrink to fit a num pad, and that may not be ideal for most folks.

    As everyone is SO happy about more and more displays becomming 16: 10, instead of 16:9, "for more usable space" we'll be comming full circle back to the good old, golden and bestest 4:3, eventually 😁

      @Heksu99 Před rokem +16

      Not really, 4:3 is a bit too square. 16:10 is great as it makes the screen just a bit bigger, but keeps the widescreen effect. I really liked my 16:10 screen but there wasn't anything good when I was looking few years back, except really pricy ones.

    • @michalneubauer4325

    • @CanIHasThisName
      @CanIHasThisName Před rokem +3

      Yeah, nah. There was a legitimate reason to drop 16:10, which was lack of demand. A common problem used to be that some games, instead of extending your view vertically, would cut off your view horizontally. And the fact remains that even today, 16:9 is the standard for media consumption, with a lot of formats being even wider. From the human perspective, it makes sense because it's more natural for us to look side to side than up and down.

    I still have an Asus ROG laptop from like 2010. Used to edit videos on it, and at one point used it as the controller for a vinyl sign cutter. Swapped out one HDD for a SSD, boosted the RAM a bit, upgraded it from Windows 7 to Windows 10 Pro, did a thermal paste clean and reapply, and it's _still_ going strong. One thing they definitely know how to do is build beastly laptops that have surprisingly long usable lifespans.

    For one, how are they able to do a 4090 for a laptop? But also, how come HDR isn’t more common for laptops?

      1. Different power target for a mobile 4090, likely 100s of watts less. 2. Expense, power consumption, and Windows historically has not handled HDR very well, do not know if it is the same situation today.

    One thing I like about ASUS notebooks is their keyboard layout: since I had a Sony Vaio, I gut used to the additonal row of function keys like Home, End, PgUp, PgDown on the right side. I use it a lot to navigate through code and really miss it if its not their. Unfortunatly, no other manufacturer picked that up.

  • @saturnity6
    @saturnity6 Před rokem

    Imagine how much power they could get if they did a watercooling solution like that guy did for the PS5 "slim" (3 copper sheets, one with the cpu block soldered in (plus whatever else for a laptop, gpu block, vram, etc), a second one with the flow paths cut out, then a third one to put on top and close the loop, so there's no need for any tubing/fittings inside, the copper itself contains the liquid - with quick disconnect fittings externally alongside the power cable, then the power supply brick also has the radiator in with it)

    Very disappointed with Asus this year. Apart from the compelling ROG Zephyrus G14 & Flow x13, it looks like Asus just gave AMD the 🖕 for no good reason. I prefer AMD's better battery life and to see such few options this year makes me very mad.

    • @TheBigAEC
      @TheBigAEC Před rokem +1

      Apparently they do have a reason. AMD can't make enough chips to meet demand. Remember how last gen almost all AMD laptops were impossible to find.
      Even though amd cpus are the overall better choice, if they can't keep up with demand for several models it's better if all the oems have 1 or 2 models they can actually supply while AMD slowly ramps up supply and trickle out new designs.

    Years ago when Liquid Ultra was the only name in the game and only lasted about 4-6 months before it started hardening on a 24/7 rig i realized it's the areas that are exposed to oxygen that harden first. So when it came to my laptop i simply put high temp RTV silicone gasket maker around the CPU die and it's been about 8+ years, my friend still has that laptop that she uses all the time. Granted it's "just" a 25w TDP cpu, still
    I put it a thin tall bead using a small straw to apply it about 5mm from the die, put it together and let it cure for just an hour and started using it. Took it apart after about 2 years and it was still all liquid, other than stains on the copper that actually wiped off. Compared to the bunch of times i've had to take a razer to the die and sand it off the heat sink (after taking as much off with a razer as i could)

    Asus is doing incredible with their ROG and Flow lineups. I have a 2021 ROG strict from their first batches with liquid metal, which had an issue but even with the issue, the temps were good. Recently, I acquired a 2022 with a R9 and a 3070 and seeing that the temps were better I decided to open the old to re apply the liquid metal (after reading forums on the issue) and the results were also as amazing. I can play in the iGPU having the laptop at 60° and the fans completely off. Or use the MUX switch and play the performance mode which maybe goes until 75° but with an incredible performance (not even turbo). Amazing crap

    The whole bottom plate should be a heatsink with fins and then make the fans draw air from one side and make the feet just a U with the fans at the bottom of the U so they pull air across that large heatsink cooling it off. to cool the cpu and gpu more draw air from the sides if cooler air is needed.
