Very informative breakdown of the shells! One thing to add it is all down to the skillset of the fireworker and whether if the fireworker is willing to break the barriers and come up with something innovative. Like putting an effect normally seen in a large shell into a smaller shell. In the Japanese pyro scene, I have seen a triple petalled 2.5 inch shell just this year. I've even seen a 12" shell of shells with each of the inserts being triple petalled chrysanthemums. In addition, the company that came out with that shell of shells effect, came out with an octuple petalled 12" chrysanthemum just recently. Its truly incredible what fireworkers are able to achieve.

The 48 inch shells are the same one from different viewing points. The shell is called Yonshakudama, made in Japan. It weighs over 900lbs, and has to be loaded with a crane.

Your average city show on Independence Day or New Year's has mostly 3in 4in and 5in at the most 8in. You almost never see larger in the U.S. unless it's a competition or festival. Most cities have bans on shells over a certain size 8in can only be used if you have the room. On a barge usually. Cause lager shell especially salute shells. 10in-16in must have over a mile of exclusion zone. 16in is the largest they will ship here. Plus, the large shells are 10 times as much each. Think about $1000 a shell or more. And plan your show...... Lots of smaller shells impress most people. I wish we had the firework culture of like Spain or Japan or Italy. Hopefully one day.

Slight clarification from someone who currently holds a type 54 and trained with a professional display company: While hand lighting shells isnt as common now it still happens and all of my training was on proper procedure for hand lighting vs using a firing system. Theres slightly more risk obviously but it stills common in smaller shows that dont need all of the wiring in them like big city shows.

Blew budget didn't get paid for what I thought was going to get from other people
Didn't finish 1 hour of show someone got hurt lighting 30 minutes in
Show was all of 1 hour and half with no dead air space as far as going off just some had to be hand lit
Someone didn't think it was lit went to light again and list his right eye vision
I think because of the double fuse the normal green lit and burned inside of tape and he didn't see it any.ore burning that's why he thought he didn't light it
